Former Badger hockey star, Rob Andringa passes away

Madison native and former Wisconsin Badger hockey standout Rob Andringa passed away on Friday after a long battle with stage 4 colon cancer.  He was 51.

Andringa played in a program-record 179 games from 1987-’91.  He finished seventh on the all-time list for assists by a Badger defenseman with 88.  Andringa was 10th  all-time in points for a UW defenseman with 103.

Andringa helped UW win the 1990 NCAA title under Jeff Sauer and later served as an analyst on both radio and television broadcasts for Wisconsin men’s hockey.  He partnered with Brian Posick on WIBA Radio in Madison to call the three overtime win (1-0) over Cornell in the 2006 NCAA Regional in Green [Read more…]

UW honors Jeff Sauer tonight

A celebration of Jeff Sauer’s life will be held Thursday night at 6 p.m. at the Kohl Center in Madison.  The 73-year-old former Wisconsin Badger hockey coach passed away Feb. 2 in Madison.

Sauer coached hockey for 11 years at Colorado College (his alma mater), before returning to Wisconsin, where he previously had served as an assistant coach.  In 20 seasons as the head coach of the Badgers, Sauer won 489 games and two national titles.  His Badgers appeared in the NCAA tournament 12 times.

In 2011, Sauer was named head coach of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team.  In his six seasons as coach, he won titles in seven major international events, including a gold medal at the 2014 Paralympics in Sochi, Russia.

As a member of USA Hockey’s International Council and Disabled Hockey Committee, Sauer was president of the American Hearing Impaired Hockey Association.  He helped select the last six U.S. Deaflympic Ice Hockey Teams while leading the team as head coach in the last four Winter Deaflympics.

Former Badger hockey coach Jeff Sauer dies

Former Wisconsin men’s hockey coach, Jeff Sauer, passed away this morning at the age of 73.  Sauer had been suffering from Pancreatic Cancer.

Sauer coached the Badgers from 1982 to 2002, winning a pair of NCAA titles in 1983 and 1990.

Sauer led the Badgers to three NCAA Frozen Four appearances, 12 NCAA Tournament berths, six WCHA playoff titles and two WCHA regular season titles.

Prior to his long successful stint with the Badgers, Sauer coached at Colorado College from 1971 to 1982.  He was named the WCHA Coach of the Year in both 1972 and 1975.

Sauer’s career record is 655-534-57.  The 655 victories is 7th on the all-time list.  At Wisconsin, he went 489-306-46.

Most recently, Sauer led the U.S. Sled Hockey team to a Paralympic World Championship in 2012 and an Olympic Gold Medal in Sochi, Russia in 2014.

Wisconsin announced Athletics Hall of Fame 2016 Class

The University of Wisconsin Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2016 was announced on Monday.

The class is comprised of Bruce Driver, John Easker, Lee Evans, Tom Grantham, Rick Lawinger, Kari Maijala, Kirk Penney and Jeff Sauer.  They’ll be officially inducted in a ceremony held at Union South on Friday, Sept. 16.  They’ll also be recognized at halftime of the Badgers’ football game against Georgia State the following day at Camp Randall Stadium.

U-S Hockey Hall of Fame has Wisconsin flavor

Former Wisconsin men’s hockey coach Jeff Sauer, along with one of his former players, defenseman Brian Rafalski, will be inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in December.

USA Hockey made the announcement on Wednesday.  This years class also includes two-time Olympian Karyn Bye Dietz (River Falls native) and longtime coach Lou Vairo.

Sauer spent 31 years as a college coach and won 655 games, seventh most all-time.  He coached the Badgers for 20 years and won NCAA titles in 1983 and 1990.  Most recently, Sauer guided the United States sled hockey team to the Paralympic gold medal.

Rafalski played for the Badgers in the late ’90’s and went on to win three Stanley Cups in the NHL, two with New Jersey and a third with his hometown Detroit Red Wings.  He also played for the United States in three Olympics.

Bye-Dietz is a River Falls native.  She helped the U.S. Olympic team win the gold medal in 1998.  She played collegiately at New Hampshire from 1989-’93, totalling 164 points in 87 games.  She played on the U.S. Olympic teams in 1998 and 2002.

Vairo served as head coach of the 1984 U.S. Olympic team and was an assistant on the 2002 squad.

Induction ceremonies will be held Dec. 4 in Minneapolis.
