Moustakas and Soria to become free agents

October 31, 2018 By Bill Scott

Third baseman Mike Moustakas and reliever Joakim Soria both declined mutual options with the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday and will become free agents.

Moustakas declined a $15 million option and Soria declined a $10 million option.

The moves leave the Brewers with 36 players on their 40-man roster.  The Brewers will also have to make decisions on relievers Jeremy Jeffress and Jordan Lyles.

Moustakas hit .256 in 54 games with the Brewers, clubbing eight home runs and driving in 33 runs.  But he hit just .138 in the National League Championship series against the Dodgers.  He finished the season with an overall .251 average, 28 home runs and 95 RBI.

The 34-year-old Soria didn’t allow a run in three NLDS games, but coughed up four runs to the Dodgers in only two innings in four NLCS appearances.

Miley gives Brewers some relief

August 31, 2018 By Bill Scott

With the Milwaukee Brewers bullpen overworked the previous two days, they needed a solid effort from Wade Miley on Thursday.  Miley allowed just one run on five hits over 7 1/3 innings to help the Brewers to a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in 11 innings at Great American Ballpark.

Miley allowed just one hit in the first five innings, but the Brewers weren’t able to muster much offense.  They finally scored in the top of the fifth when Christian Yelich drew a bases loaded walk to plate the first run of the game.

Miley, who walked one and struck out six, lowered his ERA to 2.18 through 11 starts.

Dan Jennings, Jordan Lyles, Corbin Burnes, Joakim Soria and Josh Hader finished out the 11-inning victory.

The game winner came in the top of the 11th when Lorenzo Cain clubbed a lead-off home run off of Austin Brice.  Brice had just been recalled from AAA Louisville earlier in the day.  It was the 10th homer of the season for Cain.

The Brewers took 2 of 3 in the series, their third straight series victory.

The Brewers are in Washington D.C. to face the Nationals in the first of a three game series on Friday night.

Brewers send Knebel to the minors

August 24, 2018 By Bill Scott

Corey Knebel

Corey Knebel was removed from the Milwaukee Brewers closers role after he blew a 4-2 lead in the 9th inning in a loss to the San Diego Padres back on August 9.  Now, they’re sending Knebel to Class AAA Colorado Springs to allow him to figure out what’s wrong.

Knebel made the National League All-Star team last season and finished the year with 39 saves and a 1.76 ERA.  So far this year, Knebel is 2-3 with a 5.08 ERA and 14 saves.

The Brewers were looking to make some kind of move with Joakim Soria set to come off the disabled list and it would appear Knebel’s being sent down is that move.  Soria suffered a groin strain in that August 9th game after he relieved Knebel.
