Hornibrook named number-one quarterback to start spring work

March 15, 2017 By Bill Scott

Alex Hornibrook

Last year, Wisconsin didn’t name it’s starting quarterback for the season until days before the opener against LSU at Lambeau Field.  Even though Alex Hornibrook started all nine Big Ten regular-season games as a redshirt freshman, he still shared some playing time with senior Bart Houston.

But Hornibrook, who completed 58.6% of his passes for 1,262 yards with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions, was quickly named the number one man for this season.

Kare’ Lyles will be a redshirt freshman in the fall, and freshman Jack Coan is a newcomer.  They are Hornibrook’s backups.

The Badgers opened spring practice on Tuesday and they opened with David Edwards at left tackle, taking the spot of the departed Ryan Ramczyk.  Edwards started the final seven games last season at right tackle. [Read more…]

Wisconsin Badger redshirt junior T.J. Watt was named first team All-Big Ten linebacker by both the coaches and the media on Tuesday.

Watt finished the regular season third in the Big Ten in sacks with 9 1/2.  He tied for seventh in tackles for loss with 13 and leads the Badgers in both categories.

Watt was one of six Wisconsin defensive players honored.

Senior cornerback Sojourn Shelton was a first team pick by the media and second team by the coaches.  Linebacker Vince Biegel (senior-Wisconsin Rapids), was named to the second team by the coaches and third team by the media.

Senior safety Leo Musso (media), junior safety D’Cota Dixon (media) and junior defensive end Conor Sheehy (coaches) were also named third team All-Big Ten.

The six defenders join head coach Paul Chryst who was voted by his peers as the Big Ten Coach of the Year.

The Wisconsin Badgers knew they would be playing for the Big Ten Championship before they took the field against the Minnesota Gophers on Saturday.  The first half may have looked like that as the Badgers trailed 17-7 at halftime.

But the Wisconsin defense, which has engulfed opponents all season long, did it again in the second half against the Gophers.  The Badgers rallied for a 31-17 win over the Gophers.

The Badgers (10-2, 7-2 Big Ten) knocked off Minnesota (8-5, 5-4) for the 13th straight season, will now face Penn State in the Big Ten Championship game on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Penn State (10-2, 8-1) beat Michigan State, 45-12, on Saturday.

Minnesota quarterback Mitch Leidner passed for 111 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 60 yards as the Gophers were jumping all over the Badgers in the first half. [Read more…]

Badgers move to 8th in polls, move on to Michigan

Wisconsin football coach Paul Chryst preaches one game at a time.  His players have bought in and so far, it’s led to a 4-0 start.

The Badgers rolled to a 30-6 win over the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday and now it’s time to focus on the next opponent, the Michigan Wolverines, in Ann Arbor on Saturday afternoon (2:30 p.m. ABC).

It wasn’t long after the win over the Spartans that Paul Chryst was only willing to discuss what’s next, their matchup against the Wolverines.

Leo Musso, who scooped up a fumble recovery and scampered for a long touchdown run said the one-at-a-time way of thinking is always top of mind.

The Badgers play at Michigan Saturday, then get a week off before hosting Ohio State, playing at Iowa and returning home to host Nebraska.  The fans and media line them up one after another and try to predict where the Badgers might fall, if at all.

The players and coaches aren’t interested in hearing any of it.  They’ll get to work this week and worry only about Michigan and it would be smart not to rule this team out of any game they play.

Top 25 Polls

The Badgers climbed in both Top 25 polls after their win over Michigan State.  They’re 8th in both the A.P. Top 25 and the Top 25 Coaches poll.

Saturday’s opponent, Michigan is 5th in the Coaches Top 25 and fourth in the A.P. Poll.

August 6, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers opened their training camp doors on Monday with several

questions and very few answers at this point.  That’s expected, but the Badgers have to come up with those answers quickly.  They open the season August 31st against U-Mass.

Besides the quarterback position, the Badgers defensive backfield has some uncertainty.  Free safety could be next, finding someone to start alongside Dezmen Southward.  Redshirt freshman Leo Musso from Waunakee got the first chance to work with the ones on Monday. [Read more…]
