There's a race on for Wisconsin Secretary of State.
Doug LaFollete, the veteran Democratic incumbent who's held the office since 1982, faces a primary challenge from Scott Ross. And Ross has an issue –returning oversight authority for state elections to the Secretary of State's office. Ross says the current system, with oversight in the hands of the state Elections Board, lacks accountability. But LaFollette says the decision to create a state elections board was made following the Watergate scandal; he contends it's worked pretty well, and he thinks returning election oversight to the Secretary of State would be a mistake.
LaFollette also says the change advocated by Ross is unlikely to happen. Ross concedes there's no guarantee it will, but that he'll at least be an advocate for it, something he says LaFollette has failed to do. The two face off in the September 12th primary.
The winner of the Democratic primary will face Republican Sandy Sullivan and Wisconsin Green Michael LaForest in November.
