Another legal challenge has been filed to a new public financing system for Supreme Court elections.

A lawsuit filed by former Supreme Court candidate Randy Koschnick challenges the Constitutionality of the so-called Impartial Justice bill, which was signed into law earlier this month by Governor Doyle. The suit contends that the law violates the free speech and equal protection provisions of the U.S. Constitution.

Koschnick ran for the state’s high court last spring, losing to Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson.

In the federal court filing, Koschnick argues the new law would favor publicly financed candidates over those who use private funds, and would also limit the rights of the public to participate in judicial elections.

Wisconsin Right to Life has also filed a challenge to the public financing law.
