Wisconsin Congressman Glenn Grothman says race relations across the country are worse than they have been than in the past 50 years, and he’s putting at least some of the blame on police for shootings that have provoked recent protests across the country.
In an interview with affiliate KFIZ, Grothman said something needs to be done in police stations to “dial down the temperature” and stop an escalation between officers and the public. “I think some police are trained to shoot people too quickly,” the Republican from the state’s 6th Congressional District said.
Protests have been going on across the country for more than a year in the wake of incidents involving officers shooting black men. Earlier this month, videos of two of those shootings prompted a fresh wave of criticism against police. Officers were also targeted by violence when a gunman opened fire on police during a protest in Dallas – killing five officers and injuring several others.
Grothman said civil rights legislation in the 1960s and Affirmative Action should have improved race relations. However, he believes recent violent protests, police shootings, and attacks targeting law enforcement are setting us back.
