A dog was reunited with his owner in western Wisconsin on Thursday, two days after being left for dead with a hunting arrow in the chest. Dr. John Swingle says it’s a miracle that the arrow he removed from Buster the Boxer didn’t hit any vital organs. The dog faces a long recovery as the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department searches for a suspect.

Sheriff’s Chief Deputy John Shilts says criminal charges may be difficult to bring, because state law allows residents to protect themselves and their property and livestock from dogs. Shilts says animal cruelty charges may be possible because whoever shot Buster left him to die. Buster’s unemployed owner faces thousands of dollars in veterinarian’s bills.
