A man accused of killing his three young daughters in River Falls has changed his plea to guilty but insane.

35-year-old Aaron Schaffhausen had previously pleaded not guilty to the triple homicide, but made the change Thursday following a day long hearing on evidence and trial motions. It means prosecutors will no longer have to prove guilt in the case, but defense attorneys will have to show Schaffhausen was mentally incapable of understanding or controlling what he was doing at the time of the murders.

Schaffhausen is accused of killing his daughters, who were ages five, eight and eleven, last July. Prosecutors says he slit their throats during a visit, after his ex-wife allowed him to see the kids alone at their River Falls home.

Jury selection in the case is scheduled to start next week in St. Croix County Court.
