Paper or plastic? With proposals to ban plastic grocery bags in Madison and statewide, Wisconsin Grocers Association President Brandon Scholz urges an alternative approach. Scholz says a better solution would be to educate consumers to bring the bags back to the grocery store, where they could be collected for recycling. His group's members are already moving in the direction of recycling the plastic bags, which appear to be preferred by their customers. Scholz says the costs associated with paper and biodegradable corn starch-based bags are higher, and those costs would be passed on to shoppers.
