There are more vehicles on Wisconsin roadways than ever before, with 5.5 million registered in the state as of January 1st.

Paul Bernander with the DOT says a large jump in license plates for trucks is part of that increase. Truck plates have nearly caught up with auto registrations in the state, falling just a few thousand short in 2007. Bernander says there are more trucks because vehicles such as SUVs and crossovers are falling into that category.

Two-wheeled vehicles also say a 14-percent jump from 2006, with 322,000 motorcycles and mopeds registered. The rising popularity of motorcycles and frequent use of mopeds on college campuses are believed to be factors.

Overall, registrations were up about 2.4 percent from 2006.
