Tiger Woods is two-thirds to Jack Nicklaus' record 18 major golf championships and the way things are going right now, he could catch Nicklaus in a few years. Woods won his 2nd straight major, the PGA Championship last weekend and he did so by 5-strokes. It's his 12th major victory.
I don't really care who wins, although it would be great to see Tiger keep winning these things and break Jack's record. After all, records are made to be broken. But what I would also like to see is somebody else stepping up and challenging Tiger. Right now, these tournaments belong to Woods.
I think Tiger is a step above the rest, but the rest isn't that far back, or at least it's not supposed to be. Where is Vijay Singh and Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson. When is Sergio Garcia going to take the next step. All these young golfers that are supposed to be on the rise. Hello, anybody home. Golf needs you guys.
Golf fans in this ERA would love to have a player like Tiger Woods break the major record. They then can say they grew up watching the greatest golfer in the world. But I'm betting those fans would love to see Tiger challenged, if for no other reason then to add a little drama to the scenario.
