A state lawmaker wants a vote scheduled to override the governor’s veto on who appoints the DNR Secretary. Representative Terry Van Akkeren (D-Sheboygan) has called for Assembly leadership to schedule a vote to overturn Governor Jim Doyle’s veto on a measure that would return the appointment power to the DNR board.

“It’s time to take the politics out of the DNR secretary,” says Van Akkeren, who cosponsored a bill to remove the authority from the Governor’s office. The Sheboygan Democrat notes the measure passed easily in both the Assembly and Senate.

In veto message last November, Doyle said allowing his office to have a direct stake in the DNR has resulted in many major environmental measures being passed.

During his two terms as governor, Doyle has never had a veto overridden. A vote could come by the end of this month.
