State officials have submitted an application for the second round of education funding under the federal grant program.

DPI Superintendent Tony Evers says it builds on Wisconsin’s first try, which was rejected earlier this year. He says the state reviewed comments from the earlier attempt, which scored in the bottom half of states that applied for the first round of funding.

Evers says this second attempt puts a stronger focus on improving student learning, along with greater participation from local school districts and the teachers unions. He says nearly 96-percent of schools districts and 80-percent of teachers unions have signed on to support the application.

The application seeks $250 million from the US Department of Education. The state should know by September if it will be awarded funding in the second round.
