Businesses are carrying less merchandise this holiday after stocking way too much last season, according to a marketing expert. Dennis Garrett of the College of Business Administration at Marquette University says the result is last minute sales are not as good for customers this year.

“They (businesses) are trying to make sure they can move their inventory as much as they can, as high a price point as they can before the holiday comes,” says Garrett.

Meanwhile mom and pop stores in Wisconsin are trying to compete with the malls and big box stores during a tough economy. If you see an item at a small business that you can buy cheaper at the department store, Garrett suggest you ask the mom and pop if they’d lower the price. Often the small retailers are willing to work with you.

The business professor also says keep in mind online retailers may change their prices several times in one day.
