State Attorney General JB Van Hollen has requested data from Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox on the threat Asian carp pose to Great Lakes. Cox is suing to ask the US Supreme Court to close locks and waterways near Chicago to prevent the fish from invading Lake Michigan.

Federal and state officials poisoned a section of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal this month to prevent the fish from getting closer to Lake Michigan while an electrical barrier was taken down for maintenance. But scientists say DNA found north of that area suggests, at least, some of the fish have gotten through and may be within 6 miles of Lake Michigan.
The state Assembly last week passed a resolution urging and authorizing Van Hollen to pursue every legal means available to protect the Great Lakes. He has not said if he’ll sign on to the lawsuit filed by Cox.
