The message from Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy to his players following minicamp is to recharge the batteries, be ready for training camp and stay out of trouble.  Apparently tight end Andrew Quarless dozed off during that final instruction.

The Packers tight end was arrested on allegations of firing two shots during an argument outside a Miami Beach parking garage early Saturday.

A Miami Beach Police Department report said Quarless had been in an argument with a group of women and fired his gun twice.

The Packers issued a statement that said, “We are aware of the matter involving Andrew Quarless and are in the process of gathering more information.  We will withhold further comment.” [Read more…]

Packers have an easy time in win over Bears

The last time the Green Bay Packers dealt the Chicago Bears such a lopsided defeat was back in 1962 when Vince Lombardi’s team clobbered the George Halas led Bears 49-0.

Last night, the Packers jumped out to a big early lead and went on to post a 55-14 win over the Bears at Lambeau Field.  It was coach Mike McCarthy’s ninth victory in his last 10 games in the series with Chicago.

Aaron Rodgers passed for six touchdowns, all in the first half, which set an NFL record.  By the time Rodgers departed early in the third quarter, he had completed 18 of 27 for 315 yards and six touchdowns.  His quarterback rating was 145.8.

Rodgers top target was Jordy Nelson who caught six passes for 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Jay Cutler finished 22 of 37 for 272 yards with one touchdown.  But Cutler was picked off twice, the second of which was a returned by Casey Hayward, 82 yards for a touchdown. [Read more…]

Rodgers earns comeback win in 100th game for Packers

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers may be one the best quarterback in the NFL, maybe the best, but he celebrated Sunday’s come-from-behind 27-24 win over the Miami Dolphins as if it were one of his first victories.

Rodgers led the Packers to a field goal and then a 4-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Quarless with three-seconds left to complete the comeback.

In his career, Rodgers has only 10 game-winning drives, defined as games where the Packers trailed and he led them to the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter, and they never gave up that lead.

The Packers had 2:04 left and no timeouts when they got the football for the last time.  They had to go 60-yards to score a touchdown and win.  Plenty of time for Rodgers right?

The Packers not only scored that touchdown, but they left just three-second on the clock.

Rodgers game-winning drive included a little of almost everything.  It had a fourth down conversion when Rodgers found Jordy Nelson.  But that play wouldn’t have even happened if it wasn’t for right guard T.J. Lang, who recovered an Aaron Rodgers fumble the play before. [Read more…]

Bostick expected to miss Packers opener

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel cited sources as saying Bostick suffered a slight fracture of the fibula in his right leg during last Saturday’s game at St. Louis.

Bostick was in the locker room walking on crutches this week, after Mike McCarthy said the tight end would miss a couple of weeks with a lower leg injury.

The Packers are hoping to have Bostick back by week 2 or 3.

Without Bostick, the Packers figure to give most of the playing time to rookie Richard Rodgers and Andrew Quarless.  It also means the Packers may have to keep one or two additional tight ends.  Veterans Ryan Taylor and Jake Stoneburner are next in line.  Stoneburner has received plenty of work during training camp workouts, many times ahead of Quarless in the rotation.

Taylor and Stoneburner are being challenged by rookie Justin Perillo, a free agent from Maine.  If Perillo doesn’t make the roster, there’s a good chance he would be called back to the Packers practice squad.

Lyerla was arrested for cocaine possession last fall and quit the University of Oregon football team.  He was suspended for a game in 2013 before eventually quitting.  Lyerla had his driver’s license suspended five days later and was then arrested for allegedly snorting cocaine in his car on Oct. 23rd.  After pleading guilty to possession of cocaine, he was sentenced to 24 months of probation, 10 days in jail and 40 hours of community service.  There was also a twitter post referencing the Sandy Hook Elementary mass shooting as a conspiracy.

Lyerla had an outstanding combine in Indianapolis, yet still went undrafted.  He had the third-best 40-yard dash (4.61 seconds), the best vertical jump (39 inches) and tied for the best broad jump (10-8).  His talent could have led to a first or second round selection in the draft, but no team was willing to take a gamble on a player with such major character concerns.

That didn’t mean teams weren’t interested after the draft.  The Packers were one of the teams and Lyerla decided Green Bay was the right fit for him. [Read more…]

Packers add Andrew Quarless to the list of returning players

The Green Bay Packers officially announced the signing of defensive lineman Mike Neal and tight end Andrew Quarless today.

Quarless finished last season as the team’s starter at tight end, once Jermichael Finley went down with a neck injury.

Quarless missed the 2012 season after recovering from a torn ACL and MCL.  Last season, he rebounded to catch 32 passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns.

 

Jones not sure where his future is

starts getting back into the football swing of things.

Jones will be an unrestricted free agent and it’s uncertain just what the Green Bay Packers thought process is about having him remain a part of the outstanding Packers’ receiving group.

Jones is one of the higher profile players set to hit free agency, joining players like Jermichael Finley, Evan Dietrich-Smith, Sam Shields, B.J. Raji, Ryan Pickett and Johnny Jolly.  Add Mike Neal, John Kuhn and Andrew Quarless to that list as well.

Jones was an unrestricted free agent three years ago as well.  He returned to the Packers, but that was a totally different deal.

Jones is also a different player than he was three years ago, from the standpoint of numbers along.  He’s become more of a consistent, productive, go-to player.

Jones and the Packers almost had another week of playoff football to concern themselves with.  They took the 49ers to the wire and lost 23-20 when Phil Dawson booted a 33-yard field goal, his 3rd of the day, to win it for San Francisco.

 

Rodgers still not medically cleared

but he took a few reps with the number-1 offense for the first time since suffering the injury on Nov. 4.  Coach Mike McCarthy said he saw no evidence that his quarterback experienced any pain during his workout.

But McCarthy said it’s important to remember that Rodgers hasn’t been cleared to play yet.

Tight end Andrew Quarless confirmed that Rodgers did some work with the one’s and said “12” looked real good.

But McCarthy said they won’t rush Rodgers back before he is ready and there’s a chance that he may not be ready by Sunday. [Read more…]

Packers’ Finley in ICU

hospital after suffering a neck injury in Sunday’s 31-13 win over the Cleveland Browns at Lambeau Field.

The story was first reported by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

When teammate Andrew Quarless first approached Finley after he sustained the neck injury in the fourth quarter of the game, Finley told him that he couldn’t move.

Finley was taken off the field on a stretcher, but the Packers said he has movement and feeling in all of his extremities.

Finley took a hit to the head from Browns safety Tashaun Gipson.  Television replay showed that Gipson’s shoulder pad hit Finley’s helmet and it was Finley that lowered his helmet, leading with the crown.

The Packers tight end finished with 5 receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown.

Finley was also knocked out of the Cincinnati game in week 3 after suffering a concussion.

he maintains a slight edge for the starting job as the regular season approaches.

But Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy said no job has been won and Barclay will continue to battle for that job with Marshall Newhouse.

A few players returned to practice this week.  Rookie Datone Jones was back to work, as was defensive back Casey Hayward (hamstring) and tight end Andrew Quarless (quad strain).

Quarterbacks

Graham Harrell is still the leader in the race for backup quarterback, but Packers coach Mike McCarthy said the urgency has picked up with the arrival of Vince Young.

B.J. Coleman had the best performance of the backups last week.  He engineered the only touchdown drive of the preseason.
