Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson says they always do their free agency home work.  Unfortunately for Packers fans, it hasn’t always led to signing players from outside the organization too often.

But according to a USA Today report, the Packers have agreed to a free agent deal with tight end Jared Cook and signed the deal a short time ago.  According to the report, the Packers originally offered Cook a two-year deal.  The two sides agreed on a one year deal worth up to $3.65 million with incentives.

The 28-year-old Cook gives the Packers a deep threat that was missing from the passing game during the last season.  He was clocked at 4.51 seconds coming out of college. [Read more…]

Bakhtiari expected to return for Packers tonight

Left tackle David Bakhtiari, who missed three straight games with an ankle injury, is expected to return to the lineup for the Green Bay Packers when they face Arizona in the NFC Divisional Playoffs.

Bakhtiari sat out Friday’s practice, but was listed as probable on the Packers latest injury report.  In his absence, the Packers used Don Barclay, Josh Sitton and J.C. Tretter.  Tretter held his own in last week’s wildcard win at Washington.  Barclay and Sitton struggled previously.

Bakhtiari’s return means the Packers will have all five of their preferred starters in the lineup for the first time in weeks. [Read more…]

Packers to put Quarless on IR

January 15, 2016 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers will reportedly put tight end Andrew Quarless on injured reserve, which would end his season.

Quarless tweeted Thursday morning that his season was over, but didn’t provide any details.

Quarless missed 11 games after suffering an MCL injury in late September.  He returned to play in three games but has some problems with his knee after Sunday’s win over Washington.  Quarless was added to the teams injury report and listed as a limited participant both Wednesday and Thursday.

The Packers are thin at receiver and would be able to use the roster spot for a wide receiver.

The Green Bay Packers have activated TE Andrew Quarless from injured reserve – designated for return and placed WR Ty Montgomery on injured reserve.

Quarless, the first of two fifth-round draft picks by the Packers in the 2010 NFL Draft, has started 26 of 58 games played for Green Bay in his career.  Quarless has 87 receptions for 923 yards (10.6 avg.) and six touchdowns.  He played in three games this season before suffering a knee injury in week 3 against Kansas City.

Montgomery played in six games with three starts this season, catching 15 passes for 136 yards (9.1 avg.) and two touchdowns.  He also rushed for 14 yards on three attempts (4.7 avg.) and averaged 31.1 yards on seven kickoff returns.

As a third-round pick, Montgomery has a split-salary clause in his contract.  He’ll make $18,705.88 per week for the remainder of the season.

The Green Bay Packers have signed running back John Crockett to the active roster from their practice squad and released RB Alonzo Harris.

Crockett was originally signed by the Packers as a non-drafted free agent on May 8, 2015.  He has spent the entire regular season on the teams practice squad.

The Packers didn’t activate tight end Andrew Quarless off of the IR-designated to return list, despite the fact that Quarless practiced most of the week.

Quarless could still face discipline from the NFL

December 1, 2015 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers tight end Andrew Quarless returned to the practice field on Monday, his first workout coming in full pads.  There is a chance Quarless could be ready in time to join the Packers at Detroit on Thursday night.

Quarless remains on the injured-reserve/designated to return list, but the Packers haven’t ruled out his playing against the Lions.

Quarless could also still face discipline from the NFL after he was sentenced to one year probation and required to pay a $1,000 fine on Monday in a Florida court for firing a gun in public July 4 in Miami Beach.  The Packers tight end was scheduled to go to trial Monday, but his attorney entered a no contest plea in exchange for the fine, probation and other penalties. Andrew Quarless is hoping to be cleared so he could begin practicing.

Quarless can begin practicing this week after spending the last six weeks on injured reserve/designated to return.

Once Quarless starts practicing, he has a two-week window to work before the Packers have to decide whether to activate him or keep him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Quarless said his knee has responded well.

The earliest he can play in a game again is Thanksgiving night against the Chicago Bears.

Packers place Quarless on I.R., Designated for return

The Green Bay Packers haven’t acknowledged the four to six week time frame on the knee injury to Andrew Quarless, but their actions today are doing the speaking for them.

Quarless suffered a sprained M-C-L in Monday nights 38-28 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.  Today, the Packers put Quarless on injured reserve – designated for return.

It means Quarless won’t be eligible to practice for six weeks and play for eight weeks, assuming he’s healthy at that time.

Eight weeks out would be just before the Packers face the Bears on Thanksgiving night at Lambeau Field.

Quarless expected to miss time with knee injury

September 29, 2015 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers reserve tight end Andrew Quarless is expected to miss at least a month if not more, after suffering a sprained knee in Monday night’s 38-28 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky reported Tuesday that tests showed Quarless suffered a sprained M-C-L when he got hit on his left knee by Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters in the second quarter.

It’s the second significant knee injury for Quarless, who blew out his right knee in 2011 against the New York Giants.  He tore both the A-C-L and the M-C-L and did not return until the 2013 season.

Quarless lost his starting job this season to second-year pro Richard Rodgers. He had two catches for 14 yards against the Chiefs, his first two receptions of the season.

The Packers have just three tight ends on the roster.  Rookie Kennard Backman will likely get his first chance to play Sunday when the Packers face the San Francisco 49ers out west.

Green Bay Packers tight end Andrew Quarless missed the start of training camp last week.  The team said it was due to an “extremely difficult family situation.”

Quarless returned to the team on Saturday, then following today’s (Monday) workout, he explained to the media just went wrong.

With tears in his eyes, Quarless told reporters that his daughter died upon delivery on Wednesday.  “Probably the saddest day of my life.” he said.

Quarless thanked his coaches and teammates for the type of support he has received.  [Read more…]
