Packers visit with Wilkerson

March 9, 2018 By Bill Scott

Free-agent defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson left Green Bay after meeting with the Packers on Thursday.  He has scheduled visits with New Orleans and Kansas City.

Wilkerson was released by the New York Jets early in the week and made Green Bay his first stop.  Mike Pettine, who is the Packers new defensive coordinator, served in the same capacity with the Jets when Wilkerson was drafted in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Shields signs with the Rams

Former Green Bay Packers defensive back Sam Shields is back in the NFL.  He signed with the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday.

Shields hasn’t played since suffering a concussion in the Packers 2016 season opener against Jacksonville.  It was Shields second serious concussion in less than a year.  He sat out the entire 2017 season after being released by the Packers.

If he makes the team, Shields could face discipline from the NFL in relation to his 2016 arrest on charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.  Shields pleaded no contest to the marijuana charge and the paraphernalia charge was dropped.

The 30-year-old Shields is scheduled to meet with the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday and the Cleveland Browns shortly after.

Packers make roster moves, prepare for Atlanta

September 13, 2017 By Bill Scott

La Darius Gunter – released by the Packers on Tuesday.

The Green Bay Packers released defensive back LaDarius Gunter on Tuesday, making room for wide receiver Geronimo Allison, who served his one-game suspension last week.

Gunter rescued the Packers last season when Sam Shields was lost early with a concussion.  But he struggled in the playoffs against two of the game’s top receivers, Dez Bryant (Dallas Cowboys) and Julio Jones (Atlanta Falcons).

The Packers have also reportedly released defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois.  ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky reported this morning that the Packers promoted guard/tackle Adam Pankey to the teams roster.

Gunter originally made the Packers roster as an undrafted rookie out of Miami in 2015.  Despite a lack of speed, Gunter got the job done in the Packers secondary.  But Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins are healthy this year and Gunter fell out of the rotation.

Ricky Jean Francois signed with the Packers in the offseason but may have been expendable after the Packers signed Quinton Dial.  With only one practice under his belt, Dial wasn’t active for last Sunday’s game against Seattle.  But Dial should be ready to go this week when the Packers face the Falcons in Atlanta.

Packers select DB Kevin King with first selection in the draft

April 28, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers used their first selection in the draft on a defensive player for the sixth consecutive year when they selected University of Washington defensive back Kevin King (#20).

King’s selection comes on day two of the draft, the first pick of the second round.  With the Packers defense ranked 31st in passing yards a year ago, general manager Ted Thompson decided the time is now to fix the problem.

The Packers are in dire need of a number one corner after losing Sam Shields to a concussion in the first game of the season at Jacksonville and he never recovered, spending the season on injured reserve before being released. [Read more…]

Packers hold 29th pick in tonight’s NFL Draft

April 27, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers have many needs heading into the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft tonight.  Cover corner and a pass rusher top the list.

After losing Sam Shields, the Packers struggled in the secondary last season.  They also struggled to rush the passer and will enter the season without one of their top pressure players in Julius Peppers, who signed a free agent deal with Carolina.

They’re hoping Clay Matthews can stay healthy this season after he had one of his worst seasons.

They could go the corner route right away, and if the player or players they want aren’t available at that position, then a pass rushing outside linebacker could be on the agenda.  State football fans would love to see them take Wisconsin’s T.J. Watt, although Missouri’s Charles Harris is considered to be a better bet. [Read more…]

Shields fined for misdemeanor drug charge

April 25, 2017 By Bill Scott

Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields will pay a $500 fine after pleading no contest on Monday to a misdemeanor drug charge.

The 29-year-old Shields was found guilty of possession of marijuana from an incident last Oct. 19.

Shields had originally plead not guilty but changed his plea to non contest on Monday.  A charge of possessing drug paraphernalia was dropped as part of the plea.

A criminal complaint says Brown County Drug Task Force members went to Shields’ Ashwaubenon apartment to investigate suspected delivery of marijuana through the mail.  Shields reportedly answered the door while talking on a cellphone and smoking a marijuana-laced cigar.

Shields suffered his fourth concussion in the Packers 2016 regular-season opener at Jacksonville.  He spent several months on injured reserve and was released in February.

DB Sam Shields says he’s been released by the Packers

February 8, 2017 By Bill Scott

After missing 15 regular season games and all of the playoffs, defensive back Sam Shields announced on his Instagram account this morning that he has been released by the Green Bay Packers.

Shields would have been entering the final year of a four year deal that would have paid him $9 million.

Shields missed almost the entire season after sustaining his fifth documented concussion in the opener at Jacksonville.

Shields told reporters after the NFC Championship game loss in Atlanta that he wanted to continue to play, despite his concussion issues.  If he does return to the game, it will now most likely be with another team.

Shields is facing charges for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia from an incident at his home in October.  He has a hearing scheduled in Brown County Circuit Court this week. [Read more…]

Lacy and Shields are officially out for the season

November 24, 2016 By Bill Scott

Eddie Lacy (27)

Eddie Lacy (27)

The Green Bay Packers used their injured reserve designated-to-return option on rookie cornerback Makinton Dorleant, ending the seasons of running back Eddie Lacy and defensive back Sam Shields.

There had been the thought that either Lacy or Shields would return to the Packers regular roster at some point this season, but that won’t happen now.

“It’s unfortunate for Eddie and it’s unfortunate for Sam, but based on all the medical information and the conversations to this point, that’s where we are,” said Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

Lacy had surgery on his left ankle on Oct. 19, three days after re-injuring it in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys. [Read more…]

Randall to miss several weeks after groin surgery

October 24, 2016 By Bill Scott

packers-logoThe Green Bay Packers will go into Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons without another one of their cornerbacks.

Starter Damarious Randall had surgery to repair a groin injury over the weekend.  Randall is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Randall posted photos of himself in Philadelphia on Snapchat over the weekend.  That’s where he had the surgery done, by core muscle surgeon Dr. William Meyers.  Meyers has operated on several Packers players over the years and is considered the nation’s premier sports hernia surgeon.

The Packers are already without top corner Sam Shields, who was placed on injured reserve last week after missing four games with a concussion.  Shields could come back in eight weeks but he could also be done for the season. [Read more…]

Packers place Lacy on I.R.

October 20, 2016 By Bill Scott

Eddie Lacy

Eddie Lacy

The Green Bay Packers have placed running back Eddie Lacy on Injured Reserve on Thursday with the chance to return later this season.

Lacy is expected to undergo foot surgery and if all goes well, could return to the active roster after eight weeks.

The Packers also placed defensive back Sam Shields on Injured Reserve with a designation for return, but if Lacy rejoins the team, Shields would have to sit out the rest of the season.

Both Lacy and fellow running back James Starks are out now, which prompted the Packers to trade a conditional draft pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for running back Knile Davis on Tuesday.

With Lacy’s roster spot, the Packers have promoted rookie running back Don Jackson from the practice squad and he’ll also be in uniform for tonight’s game against the Chicago Bears.
