Packers deal Montgomery & Clinton-Dix before the trade deadline

October 30, 2018 By Bill Scott

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

Twenty Four hours ago, Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery said he had a hard time trusting his teammates and he wasn’t sure what his role was on the team.  Fast forward one day and Montgomery was sent to the Baltimore Ravens for a 7th round draft pick in 2020.

Montgomery fumbled a kick return after being told not to bring the football out of the end zone.  Criticism quickly followed from Montgomery’s teammates and the Packers returner said its hard to trust anyone now.

Montgomery was selected in the third round out of Stanford in 2015.  In 36 career games, he caught 129 passes for 827 yards and three touchdowns.  He has rushed for 849 yards and seven touchdowns.

Montgomery will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.  His departure means the Packers no longer have a single player from that 2015 draft class on the active roster.  Linebacker Jake Ryan is the only member of that class still a part of the organization, but he’s on injured reserve. Montgomery miffed at lack of teammate support

October 30, 2018 By Bill Scott

Ty Montgomery

Ty Montgomery was told to not bring the kickoff out of the end zone with 2:05 left to play in Sunday’s game against the Rams.  Unfortunately for him, and the rest of Packers Nation, he did.  Montgomery fumbled, the Rams recovered and the Green Bay Packers never got a chance for a potential comeback victory.

Montgomery didn’t talk with reporters after the game on Sunday and by the time he had the chance to do so on Monday, his entire world turned upside down.

Teammates questioned his move while speaking with reporters after the game.  Early Monday morning, the NFL Network reported that an anonymous teammate questioned Montgomery’s character in returning the kick.  The website reported that six Packers coaches and players had said Montgomery was frustrated when he was benched late in the game.  They referred to Montgomery’s following actions as a “tantrum” when he slammed his helmet to the ground.

Another anonymous player said Montgomery’s display while coming off the file led to the player willfully going against McCarthy’s order to take a knee in order to serve his own interest. [Read more…]

Packers upset bid falls short in L.A.

October 29, 2018 By Bill Scott

Ty Montgomery

The Green Bay Packers played well enough to win, but a couple of mistakes at crucial times was once again the difference between victory and defeat.  The Packers had the Rams on the ropes, but the only remaining unbeaten team in the NFL stayed that way, beating the Packers 29-27 in Los Angeles.

The Packers defense held the Rams offense to six points in the first half and while they let up a little in the second half, they deserved a better fate.

The Packers did allow the Rams to take the lead late, on a Greg Zuerlein 34-yard field goal.  But Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was going to get the ball back with 2:05 left to play, needing only a field goal to take the lead and win.

Unfortunately for the Packers, Rodgers would never get that chance.  That’s because Ty Montgomery, who was ordered to not bring out the ensuing kickoff, did so anyway and fumbled on the play.  The Rams recovered and ran out the clock. [Read more…]

Packers dig early hole and fall to Lions in Detroit

October 8, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mason Crosby

The Green Bay Packers racked up 521 yards of offense, never punted and allowed just 264 yards, yet still lost 31-23 to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Sunday.

The Packers dug themselves a hole, training 24-0 at halftime and they didn’t get any help from their kicker.  Mason Crosby missed five kicks, four field goals and one extra point in the loss.  He had field goal misses from 41, 42, 38 and 56 yards, capping off the worst kicking day of his career.

The Packers struggled on special teams aside from Crosby’s misses.  On the Lions first punt, Kevin King had the ball go off his back and Detroit recovered on the one-yard line, setting up the first of two LeGarrette Blount 1-yard touchdown runs.

On the next kickoff, Ty Montgomery returned the ball 64 yards, only to have that called back when Josh Jones was flagged for holding on the opposite side of the field. [Read more…]

Sloppy performance leads to Packers loss

September 24, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mo Wilkerson could be lost for the season

The Washington Redskins jumped out to a quick lead and held on to knock off the Green Bay Packers 31-17 in DC on Sunday.

The Redskins racked up 323 yards and 28 points in the first half, taking a 28-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Packers defense tightened in the second half, but the offense had problems with dropped passes and penalties and never could get on track.

Even Aaron Rodgers struggled with his accuracy early and finished 27-44 for 265 yards and two touchdowns.  Wide receiver Randall Cobb had one of his worst days as a pro, dropping two passes and fumbling.  Prior to the fumble, the Packers were driving with 5 1/2 minutes left to play and a touchdown would have closed the gab to four points.

The Packers have played in rain and snow and cold before, yet they struggled to handle the wet conditions on Sunday. [Read more…]

Jones could miss multiple weeks with knee injury

November 13, 2017 By Bill Scott

Ty Montgomery

Green Bay Packers rookie running back Aaron Jones will miss multiple weeks after suffering a knee injury in Sunday’s 23-16 win over the Chicago Bears.  Packers coach Mike McCarthy confirmed Jones injury as a “multiple week” injury.  He’s expected to miss 3 to 6 weeks.

Jones leads the Packers in rushing this season with 370 yards on 70 carries.  He’s rushed for more than 100 yards twice against Dallas and New Orleans.  He left the field Sunday on a cart and was ruled out shortly there after.

ESPN and the NFL Network reported that  Jones suffered an MCL injury.

Jones was replaced by Ty Montgomery, who rushed for 54 yards on six carries, then left after aggravating a rib injury.  Mike McCarthy told reporters on Monday that Montgomery’s injury was not series and thought he had a chance to play this week when the Packers face the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Jamaal Williams took over after Jones and Montgomery left the game and rushed for 67 yards on 20 carries.

Packers secure much needed victory

November 13, 2017 By Bill Scott

Brett Hundley

Brett Hundley threw for 212 yards and a touchdown to collect his first NFL win and secure a much needed victory for Green Bay.  The Packers snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Chicago Bears 23-16 at Soldier Field on Sunday.

Hundley threw a 17-yard touchdown to Davante Adams to give the Packers a 23-13 lead with 5:29 left to play and the Packers (5-4) held on for the win, beating the Bears (3-6) for the eighth time in the last nine games.

The win was the first for the Packers since they last beat Dallas back on October 8.  Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone against the Vikings one week later and the Packers have been winless until Sunday.

Hundley completed 18 of 25 passes and Ty Montgomery ran for a 37-yard touchdown in the second quarter.  But the Packers ended up losing both Montgomery (ribs) and starting tailback Aaron Jones (knee) to injury.  Jamaal Williams came in to rush for 67 yards on 20 carries and the Packers totaled 160 yards on 37 carries. Adams catches game winner in return from concussion

October 9, 2017 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

Davante Adams returned to the Green Bay Packers lineup, less than two weeks since being knocked out of the Bears game with a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit from Chicago’s Danny Trevathan that led to a concussion, not to mention a night in the hospital.

Adams was cleared from the Packers concussion protocol on Friday and Aaron Rodgers didn’t waste any time getting his wide receiver back into the mix.  Rodgers went to Adams for a short completion (7 yards) on the very first offensive play for the Packers.  Adams went on to finish with seven receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns.

Adams would wind up catching the games first and last touchdown passes, the final of which came from 12 yards out and 11-seconds to play, to lift the Packers to a 35-31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

Rodgers threw twice at the end to Adams with the first of the two off the mark.  Adams returned to the line of scrimmage and motioned to Rodgers to throw it again his way.  They ran the same play, but this time Rodgers pass was on the mark and the Packers would once again be come-from-behind winners. Injury depleted Packers have no answer for Falcons

September 18, 2017 By Bill Scott

Mercedes Benz Stadium

The Green Bay Packers were already playing without a significant disadvantage when both of their offensive tackles, David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga were held out of Sunday nights game in Atlanta.  Then  take away Mike Daniels (hamstring) and Jordy Nelson (quad) in the early part of the game and the task became next to impossible.

The Packers started the second half trailing 24-7 but had the ball.  That’s when quarterback Aaron Rodgers was hit from behind with his pass ruled behind the line of scrimmage.  Atlanta’s Desmond Trufant scooped up the loose ball and rumbled 15 yards for a touchdown that would put the Falcons up 31-7, on their way to a 34-23 victory over the Packers in the first game at new Mercedes Benz Stadium.

The Packers went with second year offensive lineman Kyle Murphy at left tackle and Justin McCray at right tackle.

Aaron Rodgers was sacked three times but hit several more.  He finished 33 of 50 for 343 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. [Read more…]

Packers defense saves the day in win over Seahawks (AUDIO)

September 11, 2017 By Bill Scott

Mike Daniels with one of his biggest days as a pro.

The game was dominated by defense early, but the Green Bay Packers eventually wore Seattle down and knocked off the Seahawks 17-9 in the season opener at Lambeau Field.

The Packers had a nearly 2-to-1 advantage in time of possession (39:13 to 20:47) as they closed out the victory in the final quarter.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers started show and tossed an interception in the first half, ending a streak of 251 straight passes without one, which was a career high.  Rodgers would finish by completing 28 of 42 for 311 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

His only scoring strike came when the Seahawks were late getting a 12th player off the field and as usual, the Packers took advantage.  Rodgers looked to the sideline, saw the flag come out and then found Jordy Nelson down the middle for a 32 yard scoring strike.

Earlier in the game, Nelson became the fourth receiver in Packers franchise history to reach 500 career receptions.  He joined the elite company of Donald Driver, Sterling Sharpe and James Lofton.  [Read more…]
