Jones skips OTA, reportedly seeking a trade (AUDIO)

May 22, 2019 By Bill Scott

Josh Jones (27)

Josh Jones wasn’t happy with a lack of playing time last season and that frustration continued when the Green Bay Packers signed free agent safety Adrian Amos and selected Maryland’s Darnell Savage in the first round of the NFL Draft.  Expecting that his playing time won’t increase much with those personnel moves, Jones opted to skip the start of OTA’s this week.

Coach Matt LaFleur made sure to mention to reporters on Tuesday that OTA’s are “voluntary” under the league’s collective bargaining agreement, but it’s simply unheard of in today’s NFL for a player to miss the teams off-season program without a legitimate reason.

LaFleur said he has not spoken with Jones and told reporters that Packers GM Brian Gutekunst would handle the situation.  LaFleur didn’t answer how he would handle the situation if Jones misses the teams mandatory minicamp, which starts on June 11.

Jones still has two years left on his original rookie contract, leaving him little bargaining power. [Read more…]

Nelson released by Raiders

March 15, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jordy Nelson

In December, the Oakland Raiders paid wide receiver Jordy Nelson a $3.6 million roster bonus, saying at the time that Nelson would return to the Raiders in 2019.

On Thursday, the Raiders released the former Packer after he caught 63 passes for 739 yards and three touchdowns during an injury-plagued season.

The additions of receiver Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams made Nelson expendable.

Nelson would have seen his base salary of $3 million for 2019 become fully guaranteed on Sunday.

Nelson spent the first 10 years of his career with the Packers. [Read more…]

Packers deal Montgomery & Clinton-Dix before the trade deadline

October 30, 2018 By Bill Scott

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

Twenty Four hours ago, Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery said he had a hard time trusting his teammates and he wasn’t sure what his role was on the team.  Fast forward one day and Montgomery was sent to the Baltimore Ravens for a 7th round draft pick in 2020.

Montgomery fumbled a kick return after being told not to bring the football out of the end zone.  Criticism quickly followed from Montgomery’s teammates and the Packers returner said its hard to trust anyone now.

Montgomery was selected in the third round out of Stanford in 2015.  In 36 career games, he caught 129 passes for 827 yards and three touchdowns.  He has rushed for 849 yards and seven touchdowns.

Montgomery will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.  His departure means the Packers no longer have a single player from that 2015 draft class on the active roster.  Linebacker Jake Ryan is the only member of that class still a part of the organization, but he’s on injured reserve. Burnett ruled out of Packers lineup on Sunday

October 14, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers will play Sunday’s divisional matchup at Minnesota without starting safety Morgan Burnett.

Burnett suffered a hamstring injury in last week’s win over the Dallas Cowboys and was ruled out on the teams final injury report on Friday.  He’s joined by linebacker Joe Thomas, who is dealing with an ankle injury.

The Packers are expected to turn to Kentrell Brice and rookie Josh Jones to take Burnett’s place in Dom Capers defense.

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix will take over the communication helmet normally worn by Burnett.

It is also possible the Packers could be without rookie corner Kevin King (concussion).  Veteran Davon House is also listed as questionable with the quadriceps injury that has seen him miss two games already this season.  King and linebacker Ahmad Brooks (back) are both listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game.

The Vikings will be without their top receiver Stefon Diggs (groin), quarterback Sam Bradford (knee) and starting guard Nick Easton (calf).

Bulaga still sidelined by ankle injury

September 5, 2017 By Bill Scott

Bryan Bulaga

The Green Bay Packers returned to the practice field on Monday and will take Tuesday off.  The players returned from their weekend off in pretty good shape.

The only previously injured player that didn’t practice was right tackle Bryan Bulaga, who is still recovering from a sprained right ankle.  Coach Mike McCarthy did say last week that he didn’t have any major concern regarding Bulaga’s availability for the season opener against Seattle this Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Rookie defensive tackle Montravius Adams returned for the first time since undergoing foot surgery the first week of training camp.  Adams took part in individual drills but not team drills and it’s expected to be weeks before he’s ready to play in a game.

Also back on the practice field Monday were linebackers Nick Perry and Clay Matthews, offensive lineman Lucas Patrick and safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.

Packers release RB’s Michael and Jackson, pick up option on Clinton-Dix

May 2, 2017 By Bill Scott

Packers workout last season at Ray Nitschke Field.

Just two days after drafting three running backs, the Green Bay Packers thinned out their backfield with the release of veteran Christine Michael and Don Jackson. Monday’s move leaves converted wide receiver Ty Montgomery as the only running back currently under contract, and reiterates General Manager Ted Thompson’s assertion over the weekend that Montgomery is “absolutely…our starting running back.”

Michael was claimed off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks during last season, and went on to play nine games for Green Bay. After rushing for 172 yards and one touchdown on 47 carries, the Packers re-signed Michael in March for $800,000. Jackson, an 2016 undrafted free agent, worked his way from the practice squad to the active roster, but was eventually placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury.

What’s left is Montgomery, a second-year back, and three rookie draft picks: BYU’s Jamaal Williams in the fourth round, Aaron Jones of UTEP in the fifth, and Utah State’s Devante Mays in the seventh.

Green Bay also announced Monday they have picked up the fifth-year option on safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. The 2014 draft pick made his first Pro Bowl in 2016 after posting a career-best five interceptions. Clinton-Dix, who has never missed a game and played every defensive snap last season, is scheduled to make $1.5-million in 2017 and $5.9-million in 2018.

Three Packers selected to Pro Bowl

December 20, 2016 By Bill Scott

T.J. Lang

Three members of the Green Bay Packers were selected Tuesday to play in the Pro Bowl by the NFL.

Guard T.J. Lang, safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and quarterback Aaron Rodgers were selected to the squad.  Tackle David Bakhtiari and wide receiver Jordy Nelson were named first alternates.

Other alternates include wide receiver Davante Adams, defensive tackle Mike Daniels and fullback Aaron Ripkowski.

Lang has been selected to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his eight-year career after being named an alternate each of the last two seasons.  He has started 89 games since 2011, the most by a Packers’ offensive player.

Clinton-Dix earns the first selection of his three-year career, becoming the first Green Bay safety to be selected since Nick Collins in 2010.  His career-best five interceptions are tied for No. 2 in the NFL this season and tied for No. 1 among safeties. [Read more…]

November 29, 2016 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers

For at least a week, the Green Bay Packers have kept their playoff hopes alive, knocking off the Philadelphia Eagles 27-13 on Monday night at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Aaron Rodgers had one of his best games this season, completing 30 of 39 passes for 313 yards and two touchdowns.  He finished with a passer rating of 116.7, as the Packers ended their four game losing streak.

Rodgers did suffer a hamstring injury during the game but played through the injury.

“I just hurt my hamstring a little  bit,” Rodgers said. “I felt tight in the first half for some reason. I’ll be fine. I tried to run around too much. I played through it and will be good to go next week.” [Read more…]

Inside linebacker is last years Safety

February 20, 2015 By Bill Scott

Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy

A year ago, the Green Bay Packers knew they needed to address the safety position.  They were constantly reminded about it during the 2014 Scouting Combine.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy pointed out during this year’s combine that he answered “seven” questions about the Packers’ safety position and compared it to this year, where the questions centered on linebackers.

The Packers went out and drafted Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in the first round.  His acquisition not only improved the position substantially, but Morgan Burnett then went out and had the best season of his career as well. [Read more…]

Lynch & Matthews draw NFL fines from NFC title game

January 23, 2015 By Bill Scott

Clay Matthews

Clay Matthews

Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch was fined $20,000 by the NFL for an obscene gesture following his 24-yard, go-ahead touchdown with 1 minute and 25 seconds left to play in Seattle’s 28-22 overtime win over the Green Bay Packers.

The incident, which had Lynch grab his crotch with his back turned to the official after the score, wasn’t flagged.

Lynch was also fined $11,050 for grabbing his crotch after a touchdown in December.

Clay Matthews

Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews was also fined $22,050 by the NFL for his blind side hit on Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson.

The hit came on a return after Ha Ha Clinton-Dix intercepted Wilson.

Matthews was flagged on the play, resulting in a 15-yard penalty.
