Packers release RB’s Michael and Jackson, pick up option on Clinton-Dix

May 2, 2017 By Bill Scott

Packers workout last season at Ray Nitschke Field.

Just two days after drafting three running backs, the Green Bay Packers thinned out their backfield with the release of veteran Christine Michael and Don Jackson. Monday’s move leaves converted wide receiver Ty Montgomery as the only running back currently under contract, and reiterates General Manager Ted Thompson’s assertion over the weekend that Montgomery is “absolutely…our starting running back.”

Michael was claimed off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks during last season, and went on to play nine games for Green Bay. After rushing for 172 yards and one touchdown on 47 carries, the Packers re-signed Michael in March for $800,000. Jackson, an 2016 undrafted free agent, worked his way from the practice squad to the active roster, but was eventually placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury.

What’s left is Montgomery, a second-year back, and three rookie draft picks: BYU’s Jamaal Williams in the fourth round, Aaron Jones of UTEP in the fifth, and Utah State’s Devante Mays in the seventh.

Green Bay also announced Monday they have picked up the fifth-year option on safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. The 2014 draft pick made his first Pro Bowl in 2016 after posting a career-best five interceptions. Clinton-Dix, who has never missed a game and played every defensive snap last season, is scheduled to make $1.5-million in 2017 and $5.9-million in 2018.

Packers looking for running back depth (AUDIO)

March 28, 2017 By Bill Scott

Packers GM Ted Thompson

Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson admitted to reporters on Monday that they need to add to their running back depth chart, but he wasn’t willing to say if they had any interest in free agent Adrian Peterson.

“Let’s all together answer that question,” Thompson said while addressing reporters at the NFL Owners spring meetings in Phoenix.  “We don’t talk about players that are not on our team.  We never have, we never will.  It doesn’t serve a purpose, I don’t think.”

After losing starter Eddie Lacy in free agency to Seattle, the Packers have just three running backs under contract on their roster.  Don Jackson and Christine Michael were both re-signed and converted receiver Ty Montgomery is under contract. [Read more…]

Michael returning to Packers

March 23, 2017 By Bill Scott

Running back Christian Michael is returning to the Green Bay Packers.  Although the Packers didn’t announce an agreement, ESPN.com is reporting that it’s a done deal.

Michael’s return gives the Packers three halfbacks heading into next months NFL Draft.  He is joined by Ty Montgomery and Don Jackson.

The Packers are expected to add to that group in the draft, as well as signing an undrafted free agent or two to compete for a roster spot.

Michael played in nine games with the Packers, including three playoff games.  He totaled 47 carries for 172 yards and a touchdown.

The Packers lost Eddie Lacy in free agency after he signed a one-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks.

Big second half lifts Packers over the Giants

January 9, 2017 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

For nearly two full quarters, it was looking as if the Green Bay Packers were about to drop a third straight playoff home game to the New York Giants.  Then, two quick touchdowns late in the first half and a big second half carried the Packers to a 38-13 blowout win, their seventh straight victory.

The Giants didn’t take advantage of early opportunities to score touchdowns because of dropped passes and a Packers defense that wasn’t ready to call it a season.

After the Packers scored their first touchdown, a scrambling pass from Aaron Rodgers to Davante Adams, they would get the ball back with a  7-6 lead.

The half almost ended when Aaron Rodgers tried to hit Jared Cook for a long pass down the middle.  It’s fortunate that Cook had the ball jarred loose on a hit.  Had he held on, the Packers wouldn’t have been able [Read more…]

Wild finish gives Packers a key victory (AUDIO)

December 19, 2016 By Bill Scott

Ty Montgomery

Aaron Rodgers didn’t throw a touchdown pass and Jordy Nelson didn’t have a touchdown catch, but the two connected for a 60-yard pass play in the final minute, which led Mason Crosby’s 32-yard game winning field goal to give the Green Bay Packers a 30-27 victory over the Bears in Chicago.

Rodgers long strike came on a 3rd and 11 play and the Packers had no timeouts.  So Rodgers hustled his team up to the line of scrimmage, just in time to spike the ball, stop the clock and give Crosby time to get the winning kick off.

For the first time since 1933, the series is tied.  The Packers victory drew the two teams even at 94-wins apiece with six ties. [Read more…]

Packers’ Starks sidelined after car accident

December 15, 2016 By Bill Scott

James Starks

Green Bay Packers running back James Starks was added to the injury list this week with a concussion.  It turns out that injury didn’t take place on the field.

Starks was involved in a car accident on Monday.  Coach Mike McCarthy said other than the concussion, Starks was OK but didn’t provide any more details.

Starks has accumulated just four yards on six carries over the last two games.  If he can’t play Sunday, it would leave the Packers with Ty Montgomery and Christine Michael as their primary ball carriers.

Montgomery’s nine-carries last week was a season high.  He’s averaging 5.2  yards a carry.  Michael has 59 yards on 20 carries in three games since signing with the Packers.

Mike McCarthy was asked if Montgomery could handle a 20-carry workload today.  McCarthy said, “We’ll see how it goes this week, but, yes, I have confidence he can get to that number if he had to.”

Packers edge Texans on wintry day at Lambeau

December 5, 2016 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers did enough to pull out their second straight victory and stay within two games of the first place Detroit Lions atop the NFC North Division.  They knocked off the Houston Texans 21-13 on a snowy day at Lambeau Field.

Aaron Rodgers completed 20 of 30 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Packers improve to 6-6 on the season.

The Packers couldn’t pick up any ground on first place Detroit.  The Lions held Drew Brees without a touchdown pass in New Orleans and beat the Saints 28-13.  Detroit has a two game lead on the Packers with four left to play.

The Texans are also 6-6 in the AFC after suffering their third straight loss.  They are tied with Tennessee for first place in the AFC South. [Read more…]
