Cobb returning to Green Bay

It would appear the Green Bay Packers are trying to keep Aaron Rodgers happy, at least for this season.  The Packers are bringing back Rodgers close friend Randall Cobb, who turns 31-years-old next month.

The Packers will send a 2022 sixth-round draft pick to the Houston Texans for Cobb.  To make the deal work, the Texans have agreed to pay roughly $3 million of Cobb’s guaranteed $8.25 million deal.

The Packers let Cobb walk after the 2018 season.  Cobb had 38 receptions for 383 yards and two touchdowns that season, but played in just nine games due to injury.  He signed as a free agent with Dallas and played in 2019 for the Cowboys and last year in Houston.

Cobb was the Packers second round pick in 2011 and has become a good friend with Rodgers.

Cobb’s return is questionable to those outside the organization after the Packers used a third-round draft pick on Clemson slot receiver Amari Rodgers.

Cobb does bring leadership to the locker room and is well respected by his former teammates.

Matthews & Cobb part company with Packers

March 20, 2019 By Bill Scott

Clay Matthews

Green Bay Packers veteran free agents Clay Matthews and Randall Cobb agreed to new deals within hours of each other on Tuesday night.

Matthews agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Rams reportedly worth nearly $17 million over two years.  Earlier, receiver Randall Cobb agreed to a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys worth a reported $5 million.

Matthews grew up in Los Angeles and lives there during the offseason, so it was a perfect fit.  He played his college football at nearby USC.  Matthews reportedly had larger offers but took the deal with the Rams to play close to home.

Matthews leaves Green Bay as the franchise’s all-time sack leader with 83.5.

Cobb leaves Green Bay after eight seasons but played in just nine games last season, catching 38 passes for 383 yards and two touchdowns.  During his career with the Packers, Cobb has 470 catches for 5,524 yards and 41 touchdowns.  He rushed for 352 yards and caught another 47 passes for 596 yards and five touchdowns during the postseason.

Packers GM says the team’s plan includes TE Jimmy Graham

February 28, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jimmy Graham

It would appear that tight end Jimmy Graham will be in the Green Bay Packers plans for the upcoming 2019 season.  Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst indicated as much during his session with reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine on Wednesday.

“Jimmy had a productive year for us last year,” Gutekunst said.  “Was really, really proud of him.  He fought through a lot of things just to be out there.  Guys who have played as long as he has don’t have to do that.  His professionalism was on display each and every day, and I look forward to seeing what he can do for us this year.”

Graham finished the 2018 season with 55 catches for 636 yards and two touchdowns.  He routinely missed Wednesday practices during the second half of the season because of a knee issue.

Graham is scheduled to collect a $5 million roster bonus March 15.

Gutekunst was also asked about veterans Clay Matthews, Randall Cobb and Nick Perry, but didn’t offer any insight into their futures with the Packers.

Packers dealing with more injuries as they prepare for Vikings

November 20, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mike Daniels

As the Green Bay Packers get ready to face the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night at U.S. Bank Stadium, they may have to add some defensive line help.

Defensive tackle Mike Daniels left Thursday’s game at Seattle with a foot injury and Monday, coach Mike McCarthy said Daniels would likely miss a couple of weeks.  Down to four healthy defensive lineman, McCarthy said he and GM Brian Gutekunst were already discussing their options to potentially add another lineman.

Tight end Jimmy Graham also left that game with a broken thumb.  Coach Mike McCarthy said Graham plans to try to play on Sunday against the Vikings and will use the week to experiment with different splints to find out what works best for the game.

The Packers also lost backups Raven Greene and Bashaud Breeland to injury during last Thursday’s game.  McCarthy said the week will offer more clarity on who may be able to go Sunday night in Minnesota. [Read more…]

Cobb ruled out for Sunday at Detroit

Green Bay Packers  head coach Mike McCarthy has ruled wide receiver Randall Cobb out of Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.  Cobb also missed last Sunday’s game against Buffalo with a hamstring injury.

Davante Adams and Geronimo Allison are both questionable for Sunday’s game.  Adams with a calf injury and Allison (concussion) could be cleared in time to play.  Adams is expected to practice on Saturday to see just where he stands before the team boards the plane for Detroit.

The Packers worked with J’Mon Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Equanimeous St. Brown during the practice week.  Valdes-Scantling is the only one of the three to have caught a pass in a game.  He has two receptions so far this season.

The Packers also removed quarterback Aaron Rodgers from the injury list, which is a good sign that his sore left knee has shown considerable improvement.

Sloppy performance leads to Packers loss

September 24, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mo Wilkerson could be lost for the season

The Washington Redskins jumped out to a quick lead and held on to knock off the Green Bay Packers 31-17 in DC on Sunday.

The Redskins racked up 323 yards and 28 points in the first half, taking a 28-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Packers defense tightened in the second half, but the offense had problems with dropped passes and penalties and never could get on track.

Even Aaron Rodgers struggled with his accuracy early and finished 27-44 for 265 yards and two touchdowns.  Wide receiver Randall Cobb had one of his worst days as a pro, dropping two passes and fumbling.  Prior to the fumble, the Packers were driving with 5 1/2 minutes left to play and a touchdown would have closed the gab to four points.

The Packers have played in rain and snow and cold before, yet they struggled to handle the wet conditions on Sunday. [Read more…]

Packers steal a win with another impressive performance by Rodgers

September 10, 2018 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers File Photo – UPI/Bill Greenblatt

The Green Bay Packers did little right in the first half and went into the locker room at halftime trailing the Chicago Bears 17-0.  Chicago would increase that lead to 20-0 early in the third quarter, but it’s what happened just before the start of the second half that is key.

Aaron Rodgers went down with a knee injury in the first half and was carted off to the locker room.   There it was determined that Rodgers injury, which caused him considerable pain, couldn’t get any worse.  So Rodgers walked and then jogged back onto the field for the second half, declaring himself fit to play in the second half.

“This is what we’re paid to do,” Rodgers said.  “We’re paid to deal with injuries and play through them.  That’s what everybody’s doing and will be doing throughout the season.  That’s the measure of a teammate, is what are you willing to put on the line? [Read more…]

Packers getting healthier as they prepare to host Pittsburgh on Thursday

August 13, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mo Wilkerson is among those that returned to practice on Sunday.

The Green Bay Packers had a number of players return to the practice field on Sunday.

Defensive lineman Mike Daniels, corner Kevin King, left tackle David Bakhtiari and running back Aaron Jones all returned but didn’t take part in team drills.

Corner Jaire Alexander, WR Adonis-Jennings, fullback Joe Kerridge, WR Randall Cobb, TE Jimmy Graham and defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson all returned and took part in all drills.

The only three players that didn’t practice were WR Trevor Davis (hamstring), RB Devante Mays (hamstring) and safety Jermaine Whitehead (back).

The Packers hold their last open training camp practice of the week today (Monday).  The rest of the week is behind closed doors with the team set to play preseason game number two on Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Lambeau Field.

Packers looking to add to WR group

March 1, 2018 By Bill Scott

Brian Gutekunst

New Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Mike McCarthy met with reporters on Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

It would appear that the Packers would like to have wide receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb back and it could come with some financial concessions.

“They still have value,” McCarthy said.  “There’s no question about it.  Their leadership, their instincts, their awareness as players, it increases as their years go on.  You’re always going to measure the physical part of it. That’s the science and chess match of this whole thing.  Jordy and Randall can still play.  But we need to improve.”

Nelson finished last season with 53 catches for 482 yards.  His six touchdown receptions came in the first five games with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.

Cobb had 66 receptions for 653 yards and four TDs in 15 games.

For Nelson, Gutekunst believes his six touchdowns in the first five games with Aaron Rodgers is a more accurate indication of what he can do for the Packers offense.

The Packers signed Davante Adams to a new contract and they’re hoping to add depth at the position, whether it’s through the draft or the use of free agency.

The Scouting Combine continues today.  Running backs and offensive linemen will work out for NFL scouts today.

Bakhtiari, Bulaga doubtful for tonight

September 28, 2017 By Bill Scott

Davon House ruled out of tonight’s game with Chicago.

Green Bay Packers starting tackles, David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga are both listed as doubtful for tonight’s game against the Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field.

Bakhtiari hasn’t played since the season opener against Seattle, when he strained his hamstring.  Bulaga aggravated his sore ankle in last Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

The problem for the Packers is depth.  Kyle Murphy (foot) and Jason Spriggs (hamstring) have both been placed on injured reserve.  Justin McCray got some playing time at right tackle but has little experience on the left side, which is where he will likely be if the two starters can’t go tonight.

Bakhtiari and Bulaga both practiced the last two days but both were limited.  Bakhtiari wants to make sure when he returns, he’s back for good.  Coming back too soon and then not being able to stay on the field isn’t something he wants to go through.

Adam Pankey started the season on the Packers practice squad.  There’s a chance he could be starting tonight as well.  The Packers added some backup help when they signed Ulrick John off of Arizona’s practice squad.

 Cobb set to return

It appears that wide receiver Randall Cobb will play on Thursday night.

On defense, both Nick Perry and Mike Daniels are questionable.  Perry would be playing with a club cast on his broken hand.

Davon House (quadriceps) is the only player that has been ruled out of the game.
