Jordy Nelson headed to Kansas Sports Hall of Fame

June 9, 2020 By Bill Scott

Jordy Nelson

Former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson will be inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in October.  Nelson is one of 10 athletes set to be enshrined on Oct. 4.

The Manhattan, Kansas, native and Kansas State alumnus is also set to be inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame.  That was scheduled to take place on June 5, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nelson spent 10 of his 11 NFL seasons with the Packers and helped them win Super Bowl XLV back in 2010.  He finished his career in Oakland with the Raiders for one season.

Nelson caught 613 passes for 8,587 yards and 72 touchdowns during his NFL career.

Nelson was a consensus All-American selection at Kansas State and still holds school records for single-game receptions with 15 and receiving yards with 214.  He also tops Kansas State in single season receiving yards with 1,606 and single-season yards per game (133.8).

Nelson went on to be selected by the Packers in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

Nelson officially retires a Packer (AUDIO)

August 7, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jordy Nelson & Aaron Rodgers embrace on the practice field Tuesday.

Jordy Nelson could have played at least another NFL season, but 11 years was enough.  Nelson was in Green Bay on Tuesday to make it official.

Nelson spent 10 years in Green Bay and finished third in receptions (550), fifth in yards (7,848) and second in touchdowns (69) in Packers franchise history.

Nelson said he had offers to extend his career with the Seattle Seahawks among them.  But Nelson said ultimately, it was time to move on.

“What it came down to for us is we didn’t want to move our family around, just kind of being honest with you,” Nelson said.  “My family hadn’t even been in California for a year, and then we’d have to move them to Seattle.  I mean, I didn’t know if it was one year, two years, whatever it would’ve been.  And at this point in time, I did what I wanted to do.  I have the Super Bowl ring, so I didn’t need to go chase one of those.  Stuff like that.  So it wasn’t us to do that.”

Nelson has moved back to Kansas and will build a home in the fall.  He said he’ll be back and forth from Kansas to Green Bay as he and his wife have developed great friendships both inside and outside the organization.  Beyond that, Nelson isn’t sure what is exactly ahead, although he admitted farming will be a part of it.

Jordy Nelson

Former Green Bay wide receiver Jordy Nelson, who played 10 seasons (2008-17) in Green Bay, has informed the team of his decision to retire with the Packers.

Nelson, who was selected by the Packers in the second round (No. 36 overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft out of Kansas State, played in 136 regular-season games with 88 starts during his 10 seasons with Green Bay.  He ranks No. 3 in franchise history in receptions (550), No. 5 in receiving yards (7,848), No. 2 in touchdown receptions (69) and No. 3 in 100-yard receiving games (25).  Nelson is the only player in team annals to record three seasons with 13-plus touchdown receptions (2011, 2014, 2016).  He and Sterling Sharpe (1992-94) are the only players in franchise history to register three straight seasons with 85-plus receptions (2013-14, 2016). Sitton announces his retirement

April 5, 2019 By Bill Scott

Josh Sitton

Former Green Bay Packers right guard Josh Sitton announced that he is retiring from the NFL.

Sitton played on the Packers 2010 Super Bowl team and joins former teammates T.J. Lang and Jordy Nelson in retiring this offseason.

The 32-year-old spent eight seasons with the Packers, starting in 2008 and started every game in six of his last seven years with the team.

The Packers let Sitton go prior to the 2016 season.  He spent two years in Chicago with the Bears and his last season with Miami, although he played in just one game after suffering a torn rotator cuff.

Sitton was originally a fourth round draft pick of the Packers in 2008 out of Central Florida.  He was named to four Pro Bowls, three with the Packers and one with the Bears.  He was also named to the Associated Press All-Pro second team three times.

Report: Jordy Nelson retiring from the NFL

March 27, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jordy Nelson with his teammates in a training camp practice.

One year after his release by the Green Bay Packers, wide receiver Jordy Nelson is retiring.

Former Packer James Jones first reported the News in a tweet on Wednesday.  Jones is a contributor to the NFL Network.

In his 10 seasons with the Packers, Nelson caught 550 passes for 7,848 yards and 69 touchdowns.  His best season came in 2014 when he caught 98 passes for a single-season franchise-record 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns.  He garnered second-team All-Pro honors in the process.

Nelson tore his ACL in a 2015 preseason game, then won the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year Award in 2016.

But Nelson was asked to take a pay cut in 2017 and when he didn’t, the Packers released him.

Nelson spent last season with the Oakland Raiders, catching 63 passes for 739 yards and three touchdowns.  The Raiders then released him earlier this month.

With Nelson’s retirement, he ranks third in career receptions with the Packers, fifth in yards and second in touchdowns.  He’ll be a shoe-in for the team’s Hall of Fame when he’s eligible.

Nelson released by Raiders

March 15, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jordy Nelson

In December, the Oakland Raiders paid wide receiver Jordy Nelson a $3.6 million roster bonus, saying at the time that Nelson would return to the Raiders in 2019.

On Thursday, the Raiders released the former Packer after he caught 63 passes for 739 yards and three touchdowns during an injury-plagued season.

The additions of receiver Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams made Nelson expendable.

Nelson would have seen his base salary of $3 million for 2019 become fully guaranteed on Sunday.

Rodgers leads Packers to first road victory

December 24, 2018 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers put together his best performance of the season, leading the Green Bay Packers to a 44-38 overtime victory the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Sunday.

Rodgers passed for 442 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for two more scores as the Packers won their first road game (1-7) of the season.  They avoided being the first team since the 1958 squad to go winless on the road during the season.

The Packers trailed by 15-points in the fourth quarter before coming from behind to win.

Davante Adams caught the game-winning touchdown pass in overtime.  Jamaal Williams also rushed for 95 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown and caught six passes for 61 yards, improving to 6-8-1 on the season.

New York’s Jason Myers booted a late field goal to force overtime for the Jets.  But the Packers won the coin toss and marched 75 yards for the game winning touchdown, not giving the Jets a chance at the ball in OT. [Read more…]

Packers will see Nelson and Burnett in preseason

April 12, 2018 By Bill Scott

The NFL released preseason schedules on Wednesday and the Green Bay Packers will have a chance to face former teammates Jordy Nelson and Morgan Burnett.

The Packers first two exhibition games will be home games.  They’ll open against the Tennessee Titans sometime between Aug. 9-13 and then they’ll face the Pittsburgh Steelers at Lambeau Field from Aug. 16-20.  The Steelers game will feature the return of former Packers safety Morgan Burnett, who signed a free agent deal with the Steelers last month.

The Packers will then close with preseason road games at Oakland and Kansas City.  The trip to Oakland will feature Jordy Nelson squaring off against his former team.  Nelson signed with the Raiders shortly after his release in Green Bay.

None of the Packers preseason games are scheduled for national television.

The Packers 2018 regular-season schedule is expected to be out sometime next week.  They will not play any of their exhibition opponents during the regular season.

Nelson gets two-year deal with Oakland

March 16, 2018 By Bill Scott

Jordy Nelson

Just two days after he was released by the Green Bay Packers, wide receiver Jordy Nelson has agreed to a two-year deal with the Oakland Raiders.

Nelson’s deal is reportedly worth $15 million, including $13 million in guaranteed money.

Nelson spent 10 seasons with the Packers but saw his production drop last season after Aaron Rodgers suffered a broken collarbone.  With Rodgers, Nelson had six touchdown receptions in the first five games.  Once Brett Hundley took over, Nelson didn’t catch a single touchdown pass the rest of the season.

He finished the season with 53 receptions for 482 yards and six touchdowns.

The Raiders also added running back Doug Martin and released wide receiver Michael Crabtree.

Packers release Nelson, new GM is off and running (AUDIO)

March 14, 2018 By Bill Scott

Jordy Nelson

When new general manager Brian Gutekunst was hired, he said free agency would be one of the tools he would use to help improve the Green Bay Packers.  When the free agent legal tampering period opened on Monday, Gutekunst hit the ground running.

By the end of the day on Tuesday, the Packers had agreements with tight end Jimmy Graham and defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson.

Of course those deals, which can officially be signed when the free agent signing period opens on Wednesday afternoon, came with a price.  That price was the release of “fan favorite” Jordy Nelson, clearing $10.25 million from the cap.  The move put the Packers just over $30 million in cap space before the signings of Graham and Wilkerson.

The Packers also have a strong need at cornerback, but the top players at that position already had deals worked out with NFL teams.  It means the Packers will most likely deal with the defensive backfield in the draft. [Read more…]
