Kumerow lands on Buffalo’s practice squad

September 9, 2020 By Bill Scott

16 Jake Kumerow

Former UW-Whitewater standout Jake Kumerow has landed with the Buffalo Bills, signed to their practice squad on Tuesday.

Kumerow was released by the Packers on Saturday after quarterback Aaron Rodgers called Kumerow “super reliable” in discussing the Green Bay receivers in a Zoom session.

Kumerow had one touchdown reception in each of his first two seasons in Green Bay, finishing last season with 12 receptions for 219 yards.

Buffalo is looking for more depth at receiver after rookie Isaiah Hodgins was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

Packers trim roster to 53 players on Saturday

September 6, 2020 By Bill Scott

Jake Kumerow

The Green Bay Packers trimmed their roster to the regular season roster limit of 53 players on Saturday.  The only real surprises came when the Packers parted company with wide receiver Jake Kumerow and left tackle Alex Light.

The Packers elected to keep Malik Taylor as their fifth receiver, instead of hanging on to Kumerow, who finished ninth on the team with just 12 catches last season.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, in a Thursday interview on Sirus XM NFL Radio, was busy going to bat for Kumerow.

“Jake Kumerow has been such a solid performer for us for the last couple years,” Rodgers said.  “I love his reliability.  I  think he’s a fantastic, steady player who’s very heady on the field, he makes plays.  He plays with a lot of confidence, and he’s a guy you love having on the squad.” [Read more…]

Bulaga gets three-year deal with the Chargers

March 18, 2020 By Bill Scott

Bryan Bulaga

Bryan Bulaga had spent his entire career with the Green Bay Packers, after being drafted in the first round back in 2010.  On Tuesday, Bulaga agreed to a three-year, $30-million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Bulaga started 111 of his 115 games, having gone through a pair of ACL injuries in 2013 and 2017.

The Packers counted on Bulaga’s leadership during his time in Green Bay.  They’ll now look to veterans David Bakhtiari and Corey Linsley for some of that responsibility.

The Packers did sign tackle Rick Wagner, the former Badger from West Allis, to replace Bulaga.  Wagner has started 87 of his 102 games and was released by the Detroit Lions in a cost-cutting measure.

Kumerow could see more opportunities with Packers

December 17, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jake Kumerow

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jake Kumerow has caught just 11 passes on 18 targets this season.  But those 11 receptions have added up to 212 yards.  That’s a 19.3 yard per catch average which ranks number one on the team.

Kumerow makes big plays.  His latest came Sunday on a 49-yard catch and run.  It eventually led to a Aaron Jones touchdown run.

With other receivers (Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Geronimo Allison) struggling at times, coach Matt LaFleur was asked Monday what is it going to take to get Kumerow involved more.

“We have to make sure we get him on the field,” LaFleur said.  “So I think you’ll see more of him as we move forward.” [Read more…]

Sack celebrations a thing of the past in Green Bay

October 18, 2019 By Bill Scott

Za’Darius Smith

Za’Darius Smith is second on the Green Bay Packers team with six quarterback sacks and each one has drawn a more elaborate sack celebration.

“I had one for this week,” Smith said Thursday.  “It was going to be nice.  Coach (Matt LaFleur), he felt situations during that time could affect the punt team or (if) they want to go for fourth down, I’m taking up too much time.”

So for now, the sack celebrations are history.

Smith came up with the sleepy-time celebration that he unveiled Monday against the Lions after he missed a meeting last week.  He was fined and decided to let everyone know he got caught napping with a little on-field celebration.

Za’Darius Smith has six sacks in six games this season.  Teammate Preston Smith leads the way wit

h seven and even without a sack celebration, both should continue to cause havoc with the opponents passing game. [Read more…]

Rodgers leads Packers to first road victory

December 24, 2018 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers put together his best performance of the season, leading the Green Bay Packers to a 44-38 overtime victory the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Sunday.

Rodgers passed for 442 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for two more scores as the Packers won their first road game (1-7) of the season.  They avoided being the first team since the 1958 squad to go winless on the road during the season.

The Packers trailed by 15-points in the fourth quarter before coming from behind to win.

Davante Adams caught the game-winning touchdown pass in overtime.  Jamaal Williams also rushed for 95 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown and caught six passes for 61 yards, improving to 6-8-1 on the season.

New York’s Jason Myers booted a late field goal to force overtime for the Jets.  But the Packers won the coin toss and marched 75 yards for the game winning touchdown, not giving the Jets a chance at the ball in OT. [Read more…]

Packers activate Kumerow from I.R.

November 22, 2018 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jake Kumerow, who was placed on injured reserve September 3 with a chest injury, practiced for the first time on Wednesday.  He becomes the second player to return via the designated-to-return option with Trevor Davis being the other.  It puts the Packers out of return moves, meaning even if they make the playoffs, Geronimo Allison would not be able to rejoin the team.

Kumerow would become the seventh wide receiver on the roster if activated in time for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Kumerow said he is good to go for Sunday, although it might be a stretch for the Packers to activate him after just three days of practice.  If the Packers do make a move with Kumerow, they’ll have to clear a spot on the 53-man roster for him.

The Packers will practice early on Thursday and then again on Saturday, before departing for Minneapolis for Sunday nights game against the Vikings.

Packers do more fine-tuning of roster

September 3, 2018 By Bill Scott

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst

After trimming their roster to 53 players on Saturday, then signing eight players to their practice squad on Sunday, the Green Bay Packers made some additional moves on Monday.

The Packers signed LB Korey Toomer after he was released  by the San Francisco 49ers.  The Packers also placed former UW-Whitewater wide receiver Jake Kumerow on injured reserve.  He could return to the Packers in eight weeks if the Packers choose to designate him.

The Packers also signed RB Darius Jackson, who was released by the Dallas Cowboys and signed to their practice squad.  Jackson was a sixth round pick in 2016.  He rushed 21 times for 72 yards during the exhibition season but doesn’t have a carry in a regular season game.

The Packers filled out their 10-man practice squad by bringing back safety Marwin Evans.  They also added former Alabama defensive back Tony Brown.
