Packers releasing TE Jace Sternberger

September 21, 2021 By Bill Scott

According to reports, the Green Bay Packers, fresh off their 35-17 win over the Detroit Lions on Monday night, are releasing 2019 third-round draft pick Jace Sternberger.

Sternberger’s two-game suspension ended following the Packers win over the Lions on Monday night and they had until 3 p.m. Tursday afternoon to either add him to the roster or release him by 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The Packers were tired of waiting for Sternberger to show enough progress to warrant his remaining on the roster following the two-game suspension.

Robert Tonyan, Marcedes Lewis, Josiah Deguara and Dominique Dafney all were all higher on the depth chart than Sternberger.

Packers bounce back to beat Texans in Houston

October 26, 2020 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

One week after suffering their first loss of the season in Tampa, the Green Bay Packers rebounded to rout the Houston Texans 35-20 on Sunday in Houston.

With four starters sidelined, the Packers turned to wide receiver Davante Adams, who combined with quarterback Aaron Rodgers for a big day.

Rodgers passed for 283 yards and four touchdowns, while Adams set career highs with 13 receptions for 196 yards to go along with two touchdowns.

The Packers jumped out to a 21-0 lead at halftime and had a 28-7 advantage after three quarters.  The offense converted on seven of their 12 third down opportunities with all seven coming on Adams receptions.

Rodgers also hit Malik Taylor and tight end Jace Sternberger for their first career regular-season touchdowns.

The Packers started the game without David Bakhtiari and Aaron Jones on offense and Kevin King and safety Darnell Savage on defense.  They lost safety Raven Green with an oblique injury and linebacker Krys Barnes with a shoulder injury. [Read more…]

Veteran Mason Crosby added to Packers reserve/COVID-19 list

July 30, 2020 By Bill Scott

With veterans reporting to training camp, three Green Bay Packers were added to the teams COVID-19 reserve list, the biggest of the three is kicker Mason Crosby.  Joining Crosby are TE Jace Sternberger and DT Treyvon Hester.

All three either tested positive for the coronavirus or have been in close contact with someone who has.  They join DE/OLB Greg Roberts, already on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Packers are expected to start strength and conditioning work next week.  On field practices are scheduled to start on August 12.

Players who test positive but show no symptoms will be out a minimum of five days and must pass consecutive tests 24 hours apart to be cleared for return.  Those who test positive but showed symptoms can’t return until at least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared and at least 72 hours have passed since they experienced symptoms.

Crosby, who ranks first on the all-time franchise scoring list, signed a three-year, $12.9 million contract in February before becoming a free agent.

Raven Greene returns in time for playoffs

January 2, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers secondary and special teams units could be getting a player back in time for the team’s first playoff game next weekend.

Safety Raven Greene is practicing with the Packers for the first time since going on injured reserve with an ankle injury after the second game of the season.  Greene’s return makes him the second player designated to return from injured reserve this season.

Tight end Jace Sternberger was the first player to return to the active roster this year.

Greene had seven tackles in the first two regular season games before going on I.R.

Sack celebrations a thing of the past in Green Bay

October 18, 2019 By Bill Scott

Za’Darius Smith

Za’Darius Smith is second on the Green Bay Packers team with six quarterback sacks and each one has drawn a more elaborate sack celebration.

“I had one for this week,” Smith said Thursday.  “It was going to be nice.  Coach (Matt LaFleur), he felt situations during that time could affect the punt team or (if) they want to go for fourth down, I’m taking up too much time.”

So for now, the sack celebrations are history.

Smith came up with the sleepy-time celebration that he unveiled Monday against the Lions after he missed a meeting last week.  He was fined and decided to let everyone know he got caught napping with a little on-field celebration.

Za’Darius Smith has six sacks in six games this season.  Teammate Preston Smith leads the way wit

h seven and even without a sack celebration, both should continue to cause havoc with the opponents passing game. [Read more…]

Packers add receiver help, sign Grant

October 17, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jace Sternberger

The Green Bay Packers could be thin at wide receiver this week when they face the Oakland Raiders, so they went out and added some veteran depth at the position this week.

The Packers signed sixth-year wide receiver Ryan Grant, who has 123 receptions for 1,333 yards and seven touchdowns.   A former fifth round pick by the Washington Redskins in 2014, had career-high totals of 45 catches for 573 yards and four touchdowns with the Redskins in 2017.

Grant went on to sign a four-year, $29 million free agent deal with the Baltimore Ravens in 2018, but he was let go when he failed his physical.  Grant then signed a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts for $5 million.  He caught 35 passes for the Colts before moving on this season, signing with the Oakland Raiders.

With the Raiders, Grant caught four passes for 14 yards in two games this season before being released. [Read more…]

Sternberger to Injured reserve, Packers sign Lazard to active roster

September 4, 2019 By Bill Scott

Allen Lazard

The Green Bay Packers placed third round draft pick, wide receiver Jace Sternberger on injured reserve this week.  Sternberger injured his left ankle in the final preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs last Thursday and has been in a walking boot this week.

Because Sternberger was on the initial 53-man roster, he will be eligible to return after eight weeks.

The Packers used the roster spot to sign wide receiver Allen Lazard off of the team’s practice squad.  The 6’5 Lazard caught six passes for 114 yards and one touchdown.

Lazard was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa State by the Jacksonville Jaguars on May 11, 2018.  He spent most of last season on the Jaguars’ practice squad.  Lazard was signed to the Packers’ active roster from Jacksonville’s practice squad on Dec. 18, 2018, and made his NFL debut against the Detroit Lions in Week 17.

Lazard appeared in 48 games for the Cyclones, finishing as the school’s career leader in receptions (241), receiving yards (3,360) and 100-yard receiving games (12).  Lazard earned first-team All-Big 12 honors in both 2016 and 2017.

Packers add pair of tight ends

June 11, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jace Sternberger

The Green Bay Packers completed the signing of their entire 2019 draft class by coming to terms with their third round pick, tight end Jace Sternberger out of Texas A & M.

Sternberger was the last of the eight-member class to come to terms, signing his deal on the eve of the Packers three-day mandatory minicamp.

Packers add free agent TE

The Packers also claimed free agent tight end Pharoah McKever off of waivers from Jacksonville.  McKever was among a group of tight ends working out for the Packers on June 3.

The 25-year-old McKever started as a wide receiver and defensive end at North Carolina State before moving to tight end.  He caught just one pass for the Wolfpack, an 82-yard touchdown before he moved to Florida International as a graduate transfer.  There, he caught 27 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns before going undrafted in 2018.

McKever spent time on the practice squads of the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Packers add secondary help

May 14, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jace Sternberger

The Green Bay Packers are adding to their secondary, claiming Mike Tyson off waivers from the Houston Texans.

Tyson was a 2017 draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks out of the University of Cincinnati in the sixth round.  He spent most of that season on Seattle’s practice squad.

Last year, Tyson signed to the Texans practice squad and went on to appear in 10 games with two starts at safety.

Packers sign Jenkins

The Packers have come to terms with second-round draft pick Elgton Jenkins, a guard out of Mississippi State.  That means the Packers have deals with seven of their eight 2019 draft picks.

Tight end Jace Sternberger is the only Packers draft pick from this year’s class without a deal.
