King to return to Packers on a one-year deal

March 23, 2021 By Bill Scott

Kevin King

The Green Bay Packers have elected to bring back one of their own free agents, giving veteran corner Kevin King a one-year deal worth $6 million.  The deal was reported by the NFL Network on Tuesday morning.

King played in 11 regular season games and two playoff games last season, missing time with injuries during the regular season.  Staying healthy has been a problem for King, missing 23 of a possible 64 regular-season games during his four seasons in Green Bay.

King had a nightmare NFC Championship game and had no interceptions and just five pass breakups in 13 games last season.

The Packers have fellow corner Jaire Alexander and safeties Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage under contract.  They’ve also submitted a restricted free agent tender to keep slot corner Chandon Sullivan around for another season.  Now King provides more experienced depth to the Packers secondary heading into the NFL Draft in April.

Packers Use Home Field To Crush Titans

December 28, 2020 By Bill Scott

#28 AJ Dillon

The Green Bay Packers showed the rest of the NFL what they could be in store for if the NFC playoffs come through Lambeau Field in their entirety.

A day that was filled with snow and cold, the Packers dominated the Tennessee Titans 40-14, improving to 12-3 on the season.  The Packers are one win away on Sunday afternoon in Chicago to clinch a first round bye and top billing in the NFC playoffs.

The Packers played their most complete game of the season, racking up 448 yards of offense and seeing their defense hold Titans running back Derek Henry under 100-yards (98 yards) with no touchdowns.  Henry entered the game with a league best 1,679 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill was just 11 of 24 for 121 yards and a touchdown and threw a pair of interceptions.

Aaron Rodgers wasn’t bothered by the snow and cold at all.  In fact, he embraced it, on the way to a four touchdown day.  Rodgers completed 21 of 25 for 231 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.  Three of his four scoring strikes went to Davante Adams, who finished with 11 receptions for 142 yards. Packers bounce back to beat Texans in Houston

October 26, 2020 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

One week after suffering their first loss of the season in Tampa, the Green Bay Packers rebounded to rout the Houston Texans 35-20 on Sunday in Houston.

With four starters sidelined, the Packers turned to wide receiver Davante Adams, who combined with quarterback Aaron Rodgers for a big day.

Rodgers passed for 283 yards and four touchdowns, while Adams set career highs with 13 receptions for 196 yards to go along with two touchdowns.

The Packers jumped out to a 21-0 lead at halftime and had a 28-7 advantage after three quarters.  The offense converted on seven of their 12 third down opportunities with all seven coming on Adams receptions.

Rodgers also hit Malik Taylor and tight end Jace Sternberger for their first career regular-season touchdowns.

The Packers started the game without David Bakhtiari and Aaron Jones on offense and Kevin King and safety Darnell Savage on defense.  They lost safety Raven Green with an oblique injury and linebacker Krys Barnes with a shoulder injury. [Read more…]

Bakhtiari sits out Wednesday, questionable for Sunday

October 22, 2020 By Bill Scott

David Bakhtiari

After leaving last Sunday’s loss at Tampa with a chest injury, Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl left tackle David Bakhtiari didn’t practice on Wednesday.  It was a day that the Packers went with a shorter, lighter practice after coach Matt LaFleur told reporters earlier in the day that the team would work inside the Hutson Center because they’re banged up.  A total of thirteen players showed up on the teams injury report, which was put out later in the day.

Tyler Lancaster (shoulder), Darnell Savage (quadriceps), Robert Tonyan (ankle) and Tyler Ervin (wrist), also didn’t practice on Wednesday.  A number of other players, including cornerback Kevin King, were limited participants.

Rodgers less than thrilled with question

The first question delivered to Aaron Rodgers during his weekly session with reporters got under his skin on Wednesday.  Rodgers was asked if opponents had figured out coach Matt LaFleur’s offense and his response was short and pointed.

“So because of one game, what is it you’re implying?”  When asked again, Rodgers said, “One out of five.”

Rodgers continued to answer questions, but near the end, he was told by another reporter that he seemed down in the dumps.

“I’m definitely not down in the dumps, so don’t project that onto me.  That’s not a reality,” he said.

Packers suffer first loss, Rodgers picked twice (AUDIO)

October 19, 2020 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

Raymond James Stadium in Tampa has been a house of horrors in Aaron Rodgers career and it continued on Sunday.  Rodgers threw a pair of interceptions, including just the third pick-six of his career, sending the Green Bay Packers (4-1) to a 38-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, their first defeat of the season.

The two interceptions were the first of the season for Rodgers.  The first pick came on a third down with Rodgers looking for his favorite receiver, Davante Adams in the flat.  Buccaneers safety Jamel Dean read Rodgers all the way, stepped in front of Adams and scampered 32-yards for a touchdown.

Two of the three interceptions thrown by Rodgers that were turned into interceptions, took place at Raymond James Stadium.  The pick-six started a Tampa Bay run of 38 straight points for the Buccaneers, after they originally fell behind 10-0.

Just as stunning came Rodgers second interception of the day, just two passes later.  Davante Adams was the intended target again, but the ball was tipped and it landed in the arms of safety Mike Edwards, who returned it to the 2-yard line, where the Bucs scored a play later on a Ronald Jones II touchdown run.  Jones rushed for 113 yards on 23 carries and scored two touchdowns against the Packers defense. Packers host Lions in MNF at Lambau Field tonight

October 14, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers face the Detroit Lions with first place on the line in Monday Night Football action at Lambeau Field tonight.

The Packers currently lead the NFC North (4-1).  Minnesota is next (4-2) and Detroit, which had their bye week off last week, is 2-1-1.

The Lions have won four straight against the Packers, winning twice each of the last two seasons.

For Detroit to have a shot at a fifth straight win, they’ll likely have to scheme to hold down Packers running back Aaron Jones.  With Davante Adams out of the Green Bay lineup again this week, next in line is Jones, who rushed for more than 100 yards and scored four touchdowns against the Cowboys last week.  He combined (rushing & receiving) for more than 180 yards in the Packers win. Packers pressure Broncos to improve to 3-0

September 23, 2019 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

The Green Bay Packers defense did it again, forcing three more turnovers and sacking quarterback Joe Flacco six times, on the way to a 27-16 win over the Denver Broncos at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

The Packers defense hasn’t been perfect, allowing 149 rushing yards against the Broncos and a 4.91 yards per carry average in the first three games.  But so far, pressure on the quarterback has made up for the inability to stop the run, giving the Packers a 3-0 start to the season.

Preston Smith led the way with three sacks, including a strip sack of Joe Flacco with rookie Rashan Gary recovering the fumble and setting up a Packers touchdown.

Za’Darius Smith had two sacks and Gary would later add the first of his career.  Second year cornerback Jaire Alexander stripped a ball away from tight end Noah Fant and recovered it at the same time.  That set up a short touchdown drive. [Read more…]

Packers parting company with Jones

August 25, 2019 By Bill Scott

Josh Jones

Green Bay safety Josh Jones announced on Twitter Sunday morning that he is being released by the Packers.  Jones was the team’s second-round draft pick in the 2017 NFL draft and had sat out much of the off-season program after requesting a trade.

Jones hadn’t practiced since August 11 because of an illness.  He started five of the Packers last six games in 2018, finishing sixth in tackles with 60.

The Packers used Jones as a hybrid linebacker in 2018, but Jones said he didn’t consider himself a linebacker and wanted to play safety.

Jones had fallen behind Adrian Amos, Darnell Savage and Raven Greene.  Eventually even the play of free agents Will Redmond and Chandon Sullivan has dropped Jones further out of sight and out of mind.

The Packers will gain about $300,000 in salary cap space as a result of his release.

Packers top pick to start on non-football illness list

July 22, 2019 By Bill Scott

Darnell Savage

Green Bay Packers first-round draft pick, Darnell Savage, will open training camp this week on the non-football illness list.

Savage was the teams 21st overall pick this spring and took part in the teams offseason program.  He’s projected as the starting free safety this season.  ESPN reported that Savage recently had his wisdom teeth removed which prompted the decision.

Packer rookies reported today (Monday).  Veterans will join them on Wednesday with the first official training camp practice set for Thursday morning (10:15 a.m.) on Ray Nitschke Field.  It’ll be the first official training camp practice for new coach Matt LaFleur, who replaced Mike McCarthy after the end of last season.

Jones skips OTA, reportedly seeking a trade (AUDIO)

May 22, 2019 By Bill Scott

Josh Jones (27)

Josh Jones wasn’t happy with a lack of playing time last season and that frustration continued when the Green Bay Packers signed free agent safety Adrian Amos and selected Maryland’s Darnell Savage in the first round of the NFL Draft.  Expecting that his playing time won’t increase much with those personnel moves, Jones opted to skip the start of OTA’s this week.

Coach Matt LaFleur made sure to mention to reporters on Tuesday that OTA’s are “voluntary” under the league’s collective bargaining agreement, but it’s simply unheard of in today’s NFL for a player to miss the teams off-season program without a legitimate reason.

LaFleur said he has not spoken with Jones and told reporters that Packers GM Brian Gutekunst would handle the situation.  LaFleur didn’t answer how he would handle the situation if Jones misses the teams mandatory minicamp, which starts on June 11.

Jones still has two years left on his original rookie contract, leaving him little bargaining power. [Read more…]
