Houston releases J.J. Watt, Could Packers be next?

February 12, 2021 By Bill Scott

Former Wisconsin Badger standout J.J. Watt asked the Houston Texans for his release and it was granted today, ending a 10-year run in Houston.

Watt broke the news in a 2-minute video on Twitter Friday morning.

“I came here 10 years ago as a kid from Wisconsin who never really been to Texas before and now I can’t imagine my life without Texas in it,” Watt said.

Watt is a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and was named the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2017 for his humanitarian work after Hurricane Harvey devastated the Houston area.  He set out to raise $200,000 to help out and by the time he was done, the total collected was $41.6 million. Packers bounce back to beat Texans in Houston

October 26, 2020 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

One week after suffering their first loss of the season in Tampa, the Green Bay Packers rebounded to rout the Houston Texans 35-20 on Sunday in Houston.

With four starters sidelined, the Packers turned to wide receiver Davante Adams, who combined with quarterback Aaron Rodgers for a big day.

Rodgers passed for 283 yards and four touchdowns, while Adams set career highs with 13 receptions for 196 yards to go along with two touchdowns.

The Packers jumped out to a 21-0 lead at halftime and had a 28-7 advantage after three quarters.  The offense converted on seven of their 12 third down opportunities with all seven coming on Adams receptions.

Rodgers also hit Malik Taylor and tight end Jace Sternberger for their first career regular-season touchdowns.

The Packers started the game without David Bakhtiari and Aaron Jones on offense and Kevin King and safety Darnell Savage on defense.  They lost safety Raven Green with an oblique injury and linebacker Krys Barnes with a shoulder injury. [Read more…]

NFL players not expected until start of training camps

June 3, 2020 By Bill Scott

2019 Packers joint practice with the Houston Texans

Some NFL teams were holding out hope of conducting minicamps this month, but it appears that players will not return to team facilities until training camps open.

Most teams have already reopened their facilities on a limited basis for essential employees amid the coronavirus pandemic, but healthy players are not allowed to return yet.

On Tuesday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo to teams, informing them they must hold training camps at their main practice facilities because of the virus.  That doesn’t affect the Green Bay Packers, but ten of the league’s teams practiced away from their main practice facilities last year.

The memo also said teams will not be allowed to hold joint training camp practices with other teams.  That’s something the Packers did with the Houston Texans last year and were planning to do the same with the Cleveland Browns this year, but those plans are now on hold.

The issue is fairness.  The NFL feels if all 32 teams can’t hold on-field minicamp workouts, then there will be none.  Official start dates for training camps haven’t been announced either, but none of the teams are expected to start until all 32 teams can do so.

Takeaways lead Packers to exhibition win

August 9, 2019 By Bill Scott

Deshone Kizer (File Photo)

Last season, the Packers had just seven interceptions all season.  They tied for third fewest takeaways in the league.  It’s only one preseason game, but the Packers took the ball away four times on Thursday night and held on for a 28-26 victory over the Houston Texans at Lambeau Field.

It was the Packers youth that did the job on Thursday night as 26 players didn’t suit up for the game and at least 14 of them were healthy scratches.

Packers rookie corner Ka’dar Hollman got the ball rolling on Houston’s very first drive, cutting in front of Houston receiver Vyncint Smith to get the pick.

The second takeaway came after a 56-yard JK Scott punt.  Returner Keke Coutee couldn’t handled it and Equanimeous St. Brown recovered it in the endzone for a Packers touchdown. [Read more…]

Packers add secondary help

May 14, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jace Sternberger

The Green Bay Packers are adding to their secondary, claiming Mike Tyson off waivers from the Houston Texans.

Tyson was a 2017 draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks out of the University of Cincinnati in the sixth round.  He spent most of that season on Seattle’s practice squad.

Last year, Tyson signed to the Texans practice squad and went on to appear in 10 games with two starts at safety.

Packers sign Jenkins

The Packers have come to terms with second-round draft pick Elgton Jenkins, a guard out of Mississippi State.  That means the Packers have deals with seven of their eight 2019 draft picks.

Tight end Jace Sternberger is the only Packers draft pick from this year’s class without a deal.

Watt expected to land on injured reserve today

September 28, 2016 By Bill Scott

J.J. Watt

J.J. Watt

Former Wisconsin Badger and NFL superstar J.J. Watt reinjured his back recently and the Houston Texans are expected to put him on injured reserve.   The Texans are expected to designate him for a return this season, but it’s more likely that he’ll miss the entire season.

Watt missed training camp and Houston’s four preseason games after surgery in July to repair a herniated disk in his back.  He started each of the team’s three regular-season games and got hurt again in last Thursday’s game with New England.

It’s not clear whether or not Watt will require further surgery.

Watt has captured the last two NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards.

Wildcard weekend is here! (VIDEO)

January 4, 2013 By Bill Scott

The 2013 NFL playoffs begin Saturday with the start of Wildcard weekend.

Play begins Saturday afternoon in the AFC with the Cincinnati Bengals taking on the

JJ Watt

JJ Watt

Houston Texans in Houston (3:30pm CT).

The Bengals are looking for their first playoff win since 1990 and they’ll need a strong defensive showing to pull it off.  Over the last 8-games, the Bengals have allowed an average 12.8 points a game.  Over the last 3-games, Cincinnati has tallied  9 take/aways, 9 sacks and scored 3 defensive touchdowns.

Houston, at one time had been playing for the number 1 seed in the AFC.  Not only did the Texas fail to secure the top spot, but they failed to hang on to the number-2 spot and find themselves in wild card weekend.

The Texans are led defensively by former Wisconsin Badger defensive end J.J. Watt who put up some monster numbers this season.  Watt has 20 1/2 QB sacks, 107 tackles including 39 tackles for loss, 16 passes defensed and 4 forced fumbles. [Read more…]

Cobb emerges as new Packers weapon

October 21, 2012 By admin

Randall Cobb practicing

Green Bay Packer Randall Cobb has been described by Aaron Rodgers as “a little bit of Greg Jennings” and also Ted Thompson’s best draft pick ever.

In 2012, Cobb has lined up as a wide receiver, punt returner, kickoff returner, and running back.  He certainly has shown that he can do it all at the professional level.

Rodgers has nothing but positive things to say about Cobb, including a comparison between Cobb and Greg Jennings.

AUDIO: Rodgers on Cobb :19

Cobb has already surpassed his number of receptions from 2011, and is only 30 yards away from breaking last season’s receiving total of 375 yards.

With over 100 yards receiving and over 100 yards on special teams against the Houston Texans, Cobb has cemented his place in the Packers offense and special teams.  Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers says Cobb isn’t done yet either.

AUDIO: Rodgers believes Cobb 100 yard game won’t be last :12

Confidence is a big part of being a successful NFL receiver and it’s growing leaps and bounds for Cobb.

AUDIO: Cobb on rising confidence :20

Cobb and the Packers will kick things off at noon today in St. Louis against the Rams.

Packers look to control Watt and his hands

October 13, 2012 By admin

With hands that measure over 11 inches long, arms at 34 inches, and a 6’5 frame, the Houston Texans’ J.J. Watt is a defensive force the

J.J. Watt

Green Bay Packers must control Sunday night.

Watt currently trails Clay Matthews for the NFL sack lead, entering Sunday’s game with seven and a half sacks.  Packers right tackle Bryan Bulaga said Watt reminds him of Matthews on the field.

AUDIO: Bulaga says Watt is like Matthews :24

Head coach Mike McCarthy describes Watt and the defensive line of the Texans to be “an excellent challenge” for the Packers.

Greg Jennings hopes to return against the Texans

October 12, 2012 By Bill Scott

Jennings (85) looks to return Sunday and help Rodgers (12) and the Packer’s offense

While Green Bay Packers‘ wide receiver Greg Jennings still struggles with a groin injury from week one, he says he is making progress and there’s a chance for him to play this Sunday.

AUDIO: Jennings says there is a chance he may play :12

Jennings is playing things cautiously when it comes to the groin injury.  He is trying not to rush back as quickly as he did in week three to try to prevent another setback.

AUDIO: Jennings is taking things slow :14

Even if Jennings does not play Sunday night against the Houston Texans, he believes it will not affect how the Texans’ defense will prepare for the Packers’ passing attack.

AUDIO: Jennings says opponent’s pass defense doesn’t change :13

If Jennings is able to play, quarterback Aaron Rodgers will certainly be happy to have him back as an offensive weapon.  This season, Rodgers has averaged a higher passer rating with Jennings (98.23) than without him (94.15).

Greg Jennings looks to return and provide an offensive spark as the Packers take on the undefeated Houston Texans Sunday night.
