Packers trim roster to 53 players on Saturday

September 6, 2020 By Bill Scott

Jake Kumerow

The Green Bay Packers trimmed their roster to the regular season roster limit of 53 players on Saturday.  The only real surprises came when the Packers parted company with wide receiver Jake Kumerow and left tackle Alex Light.

The Packers elected to keep Malik Taylor as their fifth receiver, instead of hanging on to Kumerow, who finished ninth on the team with just 12 catches last season.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, in a Thursday interview on Sirus XM NFL Radio, was busy going to bat for Kumerow.

“Jake Kumerow has been such a solid performer for us for the last couple years,” Rodgers said.  “I love his reliability.  I  think he’s a fantastic, steady player who’s very heady on the field, he makes plays.  He plays with a lot of confidence, and he’s a guy you love having on the squad.” [Read more…]

Packers wrap up training camp, head into regular season mode

August 31, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers wrapped up Training Camp with a practice inside Lambeau Field on Sunday.  Packers coach Matt LaFleur used the 2 hour, 14 minute practice to get his team ready for the Sept. 13th season opener against the Minnesota Vikings.

Of the 100 or so plays run from scrimmage, the starters got 51 of them.  It would have been more, but a couple of players got nicked up late in the practice and the coach decided to pull the plug.

“They’ve got to realize that two weeks from today we’re going to be playing our first game,” LaFleur said.  “So, they’ve got to stack consistent practices on top of each other.”

The Packers begin regular season planning and practice this week.  Players get a workout on Monday, an off day on Tuesday and won’t practice again until Wednesday.  They’ll spend the rest of this week giving GM Brian Gutekunst as much [Read more…]

Packers go with backups in exhibition loss to Raiders

August 23, 2019 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur said he had planned to play his starters in last night’s third preseason game against the Oakland Raiders in Winnipeg.  However, field turf issues in each end zone saw both teams remove their starters from any playing consideration, meaning this game would be decided by the backups.

Tim Boyle led the Packers to three straight touchdown drives in the second quarter, throwing touchdown passes to Trevor Davis and Jake Kumerow, finishing 16 of 25 for 191 yards.  The Packers took a 21-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.  But the Raiders scored all 12-points in the second half, including a last second 33-yard field goal by Daniel Carlson, lifting Oakland to a 22-21 victory over the Packers (1-2).

Both teams weren’t satisfied with the condition of the field after the Canadian Football League goalposts left big holes that needed to be filled.  So they agreed to shorten the field to 80-yards and eliminated kickoffs for the game.  It meant the 10-yard line would now represent the new goal lines and the real [Read more…]

Rodgers is day-to-day with back tightness

August 19, 2019 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

After Aaron Rodgers was held out of last Thursday’s preseason game at Baltimore because of back tightness, the Packers quarterback was held out of practice on Sunday for precautionary reasons.

The Packers are getting ready for Thursday’s preseason game against the Oakland Raiders on Thursday in Winnipeg, Manitoba and if it were a regular season game, it’s likely Rodgers would be on the practice field.  But when it’s preseason, coach Matt LaFleur said, “It wasn’t worth it.”

“You know, I think that he’s gotten a lot of great work in,” LaFleur said.  “You’d like to get him some game action.  Again, he’s a veteran guy that’s played a lot of football.  I mean, 14 years in the league.  There’s not much that he hasn’t seen.  So it’s not overly concerning to me.”

When asked if Rodgers would play against Kansas City in the August 29th preseason finale, LaFleur was non-committal. [Read more…]

Takeaways lead Packers to exhibition win

August 9, 2019 By Bill Scott

Last season, the Packers had just seven interceptions all season.  They tied for third fewest takeaways in the league.  It’s only one preseason game, but the Packers took the ball away four times on Thursday night and held on for a 28-26 victory over the Houston Texans at Lambeau Field.

It was the Packers youth that did the job on Thursday night as 26 players didn’t suit up for the game and at least 14 of them were healthy scratches.

Packers rookie corner Ka’dar Hollman got the ball rolling on Houston’s very first drive, cutting in front of Houston receiver Vyncint Smith to get the pick.

The second takeaway came after a 56-yard JK Scott punt.  Returner Keke Coutee couldn’t handled it and Equanimeous St. Brown recovered it in the endzone for a Packers touchdown. [Read more…]

Would the Packers go high with a quarterback in the draft?

April 23, 2019 By Bill Scott

GM Brian Gutekunst

The Green Bay Packers hosted Missouri Tigers quarterback Drew Lock for a formal visit last week at Lambeau Field.  The Packers also reportedly wanted to bring in Duke’s Daniel Jones, but a scheduling conflict prevented that from happening.

What are the chances the Packers select a quarterback in the early rounds of the 2019 NFL Draft?

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst was asked bout the possibility during his pre-draft visit with reporters at Lambeau Field on Monday.  He explained that the visits are important for medical evaluations as well as follow-ups from the NFL scouting combine.  Of course Gutekunst said teams sometimes like to throw out a smoke screen or two.

Aaron Rodgers just signed a four-year contract extension that will carry him to his 40th birthday.  What would he think if the Packers selected a quarterback early on?  Would he be offended that the Packers could be looking for his successor so early in the game? [Read more…]

Packers fall to Chiefs in preseason finale, focus now on roster

August 31, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers dropped their preseason finale to the Kansas City Chiefs 33-21 on Thursday night, bring an end to the preseason.

DeShone Kizer was picked off early as the Packers fell behind 7-0, but on the next drive, Kizer found Geronimo Allison with a 31-yard touchdown pass to even the score.  Kizer finished his night after just one quarter, going 5-for-7 for 57 yards with a touchdown pass and an interception.

Tim Boyle took over and played the final three quarters.  He led the Packers on a 13-play, 78-yard scoring drive.  Boyle capped that drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Robert Tonyan.

Aaron Jones, who most sit the first two games of the regular season on a suspension, rushed for a touchdown and the Packers led 21-17 at halftime.  But the only scoring in the second half came from the Chiefs.  Boyle was picked off twice.

Right tackle Bryan Bulaga returned to the lineup for the Packers, his first playing action since suffering a ACL injury last season.  Bulaga said he felt good and says he’s ready to start the regular season against the Chicago Bears a week from Sunday night.

Receiver/returner  Trevor Davis also returned from a hamstring injury and nearly returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

The Packers finished the exhibition season with a 2-2 record and now turn their attention to finalizing their 53-man roster by 3 p.m. Saturday.  They can announced a 10-player practice squad on Sunday.

Packers fans get their wish, report says Hundley dealt to Seahawks

August 29, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Packers backup QB job goes to DeShone Kizer.

Brett Hundley went 3-6 in nine starts while filling in for Aaron Rodgers last season.  The Green Bay Packers missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and fans placed the blame on the shoulders of Hundley.  Those same fans were far more supportive of newcomer Deshone Kizer during training camp than they were of Hundley.

ESPN’s Rob Demovsky and Adam Schefter reported today that the Packers sent Hundley to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2019 draft pick.  Packers fans got their wish and will now see if Kizer can do the job if something were to happen to Rodgers again.

In a perfect world, Kizer will stand on the sidelines and watch, only playing in mop-up duty.

Hundley threw for 1,836 yards last season with nine touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

A source to the story said the Packers plan to keep both Kizer and rookie Tim Boyle on their 53-man roster, barring [Read more…]
