Packers top 5 wide receivers join Aaron Rodgers as no-shows

May 26, 2021 By Bill Scott

Jordan Love

Not only has quarterback Aaron Rodgers failed to report for the start of the Green Bay Packers voluntary organized team activities (OTAs), but the first workout open to reporters on Tuesday saw the team’s top five veteran receivers skip out as well.

Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Allen Lazard, Equanimeous St. Brown and Devin Funchess were all missing.  In all, 10 of the 89 players on the roster weren’t on the field for practice.  In addition to Rodgers and the receivers, Jaire Alexander, David Bakhtiari, Ka’dar Hollman and Stanford Samuels were no-shows.  Josiah Deguara, Kevin King and Blake Bortles were present but either didn’t participate or were very limited.

Did the wide receivers fail to show up as a move of solidarity in support of Rodgers?  Coach Matt LaFleur said he recently talked with all five and didn’t feel it was a coordinated effort.  But missing all five certainly seems fishy. [Read more…]

Rodgers a no-show for the start of Packers OTA’s

May 24, 2021 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

The Green Bay Packers started the third phase of their offseason program, organized team activities and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, as expected, was a no-show on Monday.

Rodgers is one of nearly two dozen Packers players that have offseason workout bonuses built into their contracts.  Rodgers has officially missed enough time to make him ineligible for the bonus.

Rodgers and the Packers are at a reported standstill as to whether or not he wants to play for the Packers any longer.  He has spent all 16 years of his NFL career in Green Bay to this point. [Read more…]

Packers adding veteran QB Blake Bortles

May 13, 2021 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers are expected to sign veteran quarterback Blake Bortles to a one-year contract.  The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Shefter on Wednesday.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said on draft weekend that the Packers would be looking to add a veteran quarterback and possibly another rookie quarterback to fill out the roster at the position.  Heading into this week, the Packers had just two quarterbacks on their roster with Aaron Rodgers and 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love.

Bortles was the third pick in the 2014 NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars.  Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett was the quarterbacks coach and eventually the offensive coordinator for Bortles from 2015 to 2018.  They reached the AFC Championship Game after the 2017 season.

Bortles last played in 2019 with the Los Angeles Rams and spent time with the Rams and Broncos as a backup last season.

In 73 career starts, Bortles has a 24-49 record with 103 touchdowns and 75 interceptions.

To date, Aaron Rodgers hasn’t participated in the Packers offseason program.  They’ll start OTA’s on May 24 with the team’s mandatory minicamp scheduled for June 8-10.

Rodgers draws his line in the sand, says he wants out of Green Bay

April 30, 2021 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

Despite Aaron Rodgers telling the Green Bay Packers he no longer wants to play in Green Bay, the Packers are at least saying that they believe Rodgers will be barking out signals at Lambeau Field in 2021.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst delivered that message to reporters following day one of the NFL Draft on Thursday night.

Earlier in the day, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Rodgers had become so disgruntled with the team that he wanted out.

The 37-year-old quarterback, coming off his third NFL MVP honor, is under contract through the 2023 season.  But he has no more guaranteed money left on his deal.

ESPN reported that Gutekunst, Packers coach Matt LaFleur and team president Mark Murphy each met with Rodgers on separate occasions during the offseason and according to the NFL Network, Rodgers had his agent (David Dunn) recently fly to Green Bay for several days of meetings about the situation. Packers wrap up training camp, head into regular season mode

August 31, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers wrapped up Training Camp with a practice inside Lambeau Field on Sunday.  Packers coach Matt LaFleur used the 2 hour, 14 minute practice to get his team ready for the Sept. 13th season opener against the Minnesota Vikings.

Of the 100 or so plays run from scrimmage, the starters got 51 of them.  It would have been more, but a couple of players got nicked up late in the practice and the coach decided to pull the plug.

“They’ve got to realize that two weeks from today we’re going to be playing our first game,” LaFleur said.  “So, they’ve got to stack consistent practices on top of each other.”

The Packers begin regular season planning and practice this week.  Players get a workout on Monday, an off day on Tuesday and won’t practice again until Wednesday.  They’ll spend the rest of this week giving GM Brian Gutekunst as much [Read more…]

Brett Favre goes off on Packers over 2020 draft (AUDIO)

April 29, 2020 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre thinks Aaron Rodgers will end up finishing his career elsewhere, just like he did.

Favre appeared as a guest on the Rich Eisen Show on the NBC Sports Network on Wednesday.

Favre said he talked with Rodgers since the Packers traded up four spots to pick Jordan Love with the 26th overall pick in the draft last Thursday.  Favre said he was surprised the Packers went in the direction that they did.

The Packers have been criticized for not only taking a quarterback in the first round, but not doing more offensively to help the Packers out offensively.

Rodgers has four years left on the $134 million extension that he signed in 2018.  From a salary cap standpoint, it would be next to impossible for the Packers to part with Rodgers for at least the first two years.  But after that, who knows.

“I think he’ll play somewhere else,” Favre told Rich Eisen.  “My gut tells me now.  I don’t know this for certain, but I guarantee you, it’s got the wheels turning in Aaron’s mind.  If that’s the case, then that means there’s a chip on his [Read more…]

Packers release QB Manny Wilkins

April 28, 2020 By Bill Scott

After drafting quarterback Jordan Love in the opening round of the NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers reduced their quarterback stable by one, releasing Manny Wilkins on Monday.

Wilkins signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent last year and was in the mix to be Aaron Rodgers’ backup before being released after training camp.

Wilkins later returned and spent the season on the Packers practice squad.

Lazard, Sullivan sign tenders

Wide receiver Allen Lazard and cornerback Chandon Sullivan are back for 2020.  They each signed their exclusive rights tender, guaranteeing their return for the season.  It allows both to take part in the Packers virtual offseason program, which started on Monday.

Lazard had 35 catches for 477 yards and three touchdowns last year, while Sullivan had 30 tackles and an interception.

Packers 2020 draft class ranks among the NFL’s worst

April 27, 2020 By Bill Scott

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst

After the dust has settled, the Green Bay Packers 2020 NFL Draft class ranks among the worst in the league and still has Packers Nation shaking their heads at what transpired over the weekend.

A record 37 receivers were selected in a receiver rich draft, but none of those 36 went to the Packers, who entered the draft needing to add help on the outside to improve the arsenal with which Aaron Rodgers has to work with.

The Packers traded a 4th round pick to move up from 30th to 26th in the first round and selected Utah State quarterback Jordan Love.  General Manager Brian Gutekunst had given us some clues over the previous three weeks that he would at least consider such a move.  We all shook it off as a smoke screen, because the Packers have Aaron Rodgers under contract for the next four years.

The scenario was similar when the Packers used the 24th pick in the first round on Aaron Rodgers back in 2005, when Brett Favre was still going strong.  But that move turned out alright, so we move on. [Read more…]

Packers trade up, select QB Jordan Love

April 23, 2020 By Bill Scott

Nobody really expected the Green Bay Packers to pick Aaron Rodgers back in 2005, but when he fell to them at #24, Ted Thompson made the move that would shape the team’s future for years to come.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is hoping to find lightning in a bottle again after trading up from number 30 to number 26 in a trade with Miami to select Utah State quarterback Jordan Love.  The Packers traded their fourth-round pick to Miami to move up to select Love.

Love is 6’4, 224 lbs and has the ability to be the Packers quarterback of the future.  But he’ll have some time to watch and learn under Aaron Rodgers.

Love left Utah State a year early.  He threw for 3,567 yards and 32 touchdowns with just six interceptions in 2018.  Last year, his numbers dropped to 3,402 yards, 20 TD’s and 17 interceptions as Utah State struggled.

Gutekunst repeatedly said before the draft that if the right quarterback was available when they picked, he wouldn’t hesitate to make the move.  Obviously, it wasn’t lip service.

With the trade, the Packers now have eight picks left, including single picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds on Friday night.
