Packers don’t use franchise tag

March 10, 2021 By Bill Scott

Packers RB Aaron Jones

The Green Bay Packers elected not to put the “Franchise Tag” on running back Aaron Jones, although reports say they’re trying to sign him to a long term contract.  But the deadline to do so is Monday (March 15), otherwise Jones will become an unrestricted free agent and Green Bay would only get a compensatory draft pick in return.

ESPN reports Jones turned down multiple offers from the Packers because they lacked the guaranteed money he was seeking.

The Packers are strapped by the league’s new salary cap which is set at $182.5 million for 2021, down 8% from last season.  Right now, the Packers are roughly $10 million over the cap.

Jones has rushed for more than a thousand yards each of the last two years and last season he had a career high of 1,104 yards with a 5.5 yards per carry average.

Jones is one of only two players in NFL history to post 3,000-plus yards rushing (3,364) and 35-plus rushing touchdowns (37) with an average of 5-plus yards per carry (5.2) in their first four seasons.  Jim Brown is the other.

The Packers selected running back A.J. Dillon in the second round of the 2020 Draft last year.  If the Packers can’t reach a deal with Jones, Dillon stands to become the teams top running back heading into the 2021 season.

Packers one win away from Super Bowl

January 17, 2021 By Bill Scott

8,456 fans at Lambeau Field on Saturday

Aaron Rodgers passed for 296 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 32-18 win over the Los Angeles Rams, advancing to next Sunday’s NFC Championship game at Lambeau Field.

It’s Rodgers fifth appearance in the NFC title game, but the first at Lambeau Field.  It’s also the second time in two years that Matt LaFleur has led the Packers to the NFC Championship game.  The Packers lost last years NFC title game 37-20 to San Francisco.

The Packers used all three of their running backs on Saturday.  With the Rams trying to take Davante Adams away, the Packers used a heavy ground attack to rush for 188 yards on 36 carries, a 5.2 yards per carry average with two touchdowns.

Aaron Jones led the way with 99 yards on 14 carries and a score.  Jamal Williams added 65 yards on 12 carries and A.J. [Read more…]

Packers Use Home Field To Crush Titans

December 28, 2020 By Bill Scott

#28 AJ Dillon

The Green Bay Packers showed the rest of the NFL what they could be in store for if the NFC playoffs come through Lambeau Field in their entirety.

A day that was filled with snow and cold, the Packers dominated the Tennessee Titans 40-14, improving to 12-3 on the season.  The Packers are one win away on Sunday afternoon in Chicago to clinch a first round bye and top billing in the NFC playoffs.

The Packers played their most complete game of the season, racking up 448 yards of offense and seeing their defense hold Titans running back Derek Henry under 100-yards (98 yards) with no touchdowns.  Henry entered the game with a league best 1,679 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill was just 11 of 24 for 121 yards and a touchdown and threw a pair of interceptions.

Aaron Rodgers wasn’t bothered by the snow and cold at all.  In fact, he embraced it, on the way to a four touchdown day.  Rodgers completed 21 of 25 for 231 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.  Three of his four scoring strikes went to Davante Adams, who finished with 11 receptions for 142 yards. Packers sign top two draft picks (UPDATE)

July 1, 2020 By Bill Scott

A.J. Dillon

The Green Bay Packers have now signed their top two picks from the 2020 NFL Draft.

Quarterback Jordan Love, who was the 26th selection in the first round, reportedly gets a fully guaranteed four-year deal worth more than $12.3 million.  It’s the first time the 26th overall pick has received a fully guaranteed deal under the current rookie contract system.

Second-round pick A.J. Dillon also signed his rookie deal with the team and posed for a picture, which he shared on his twitter account.

The former Boston College star ran for 1,685 yards and 14 touchdowns last season and finished his collegiate career with 4,382 yards and 38 touchdowns.

Dillon joins veterans Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams as well as second year back Dexter Williams in the Packers backfield.  Jones scored 19 touchdowns for the Packers last season.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur said he hoped to have rookies come to camp a week before the veterans to get an early start after COVID-19 forced players to only meet virtually, missing out on OTA’s and minicamps.

Packers 2020 draft class ranks among the NFL’s worst

April 27, 2020 By Bill Scott

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst

After the dust has settled, the Green Bay Packers 2020 NFL Draft class ranks among the worst in the league and still has Packers Nation shaking their heads at what transpired over the weekend.

A record 37 receivers were selected in a receiver rich draft, but none of those 36 went to the Packers, who entered the draft needing to add help on the outside to improve the arsenal with which Aaron Rodgers has to work with.

The Packers traded a 4th round pick to move up from 30th to 26th in the first round and selected Utah State quarterback Jordan Love.  General Manager Brian Gutekunst had given us some clues over the previous three weeks that he would at least consider such a move.  We all shook it off as a smoke screen, because the Packers have Aaron Rodgers under contract for the next four years.

The scenario was similar when the Packers used the 24th pick in the first round on Aaron Rodgers back in 2005, when Brett Favre was still going strong.  But that move turned out alright, so we move on. [Read more…]
