Packers reach four-year deal with RB Jones

March 14, 2021 By Bill Scott

Aaron Jones

With the deadline to negotiate a deal with their own free agents fast approaching, the Green Bay Packers have reportedly reached agreement with running back Aaron Jones on a four-year deal worth $48 million.  The deal includes a $13 million signing bonus.  ESPN was first to report the deal.

Jones switched agents late in the season, hiring Drew Rosenhaus.  Rosenhaus told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Jones offered the Packers a hometown discount.  He said would have received much larger offers had Jones hit free agency.

The $12-million yearly average puts Jones in a tie with Joe Mixon of the Cincinnati Bengals for the sixth-highest paid running back in the league.

The Packers restructured a number of contracts over the weekend to clear cap space.  They’ll need to do more to fit Jones under the cap by the start of the new league year on Tuesday.

Jones rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons.  He’s scored 30 touchdowns over the last two years.

Packers don’t use franchise tag

March 10, 2021 By Bill Scott

Packers RB Aaron Jones

The Green Bay Packers elected not to put the “Franchise Tag” on running back Aaron Jones, although reports say they’re trying to sign him to a long term contract.  But the deadline to do so is Monday (March 15), otherwise Jones will become an unrestricted free agent and Green Bay would only get a compensatory draft pick in return.

ESPN reports Jones turned down multiple offers from the Packers because they lacked the guaranteed money he was seeking.

The Packers are strapped by the league’s new salary cap which is set at $182.5 million for 2021, down 8% from last season.  Right now, the Packers are roughly $10 million over the cap.

Jones has rushed for more than a thousand yards each of the last two years and last season he had a career high of 1,104 yards with a 5.5 yards per carry average.

Jones is one of only two players in NFL history to post 3,000-plus yards rushing (3,364) and 35-plus rushing touchdowns (37) with an average of 5-plus yards per carry (5.2) in their first four seasons.  Jim Brown is the other.

The Packers selected running back A.J. Dillon in the second round of the 2020 Draft last year.  If the Packers can’t reach a deal with Jones, Dillon stands to become the teams top running back heading into the 2021 season.

Can Packers make a splash in free agency? Aaron Jones?

March 3, 2021 By Bill Scott

Brian Gutekunst

The Green Bay Packers still have to cut more than $12.5 million just to get under the adjusted $180 million salary cap before the start of the new NFL year, they’ll need to go beyond that if they hope to make any moves in free agency, including bringing back any of their own, such as Aaron Jones and/or Corey Linsley to name two.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst spoke with reporters via zoom on Tuesday.  Certainly a long term deal with Jones would be considerably better for the salary cap, but he didn’t rule out using a tag on Jones.

The last time the Packers used the franchise tag was in 2010, on nose tackle Ryan Pickett.  Losing Jones, without exploring every opportunity to keep him, would be a mistake.

Jones is tied for second in the league the last two years with 30 total touchdowns.  His 5.17 yards per carry career average [Read more…]

Packers season comes to an end in NFC Championship

January 25, 2021 By Bill Scott

After working all season to secure a first round playoff bye and home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, the Green Bay Packers season came to an end in the NFC Championship game, falling to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-26 on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Tom Brady threw for 280 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions and will play in his 10th Super Bowl in two weeks, this time on his own home field in Tampa.  Brady will be in search of his seventh Super Bowl title.  To get there, the Bucs had to beat three division winners, including the Packers on Sunday.

The Buccaneers (14-5) will face the Kansas City Chiefs (16-2) on Feb. 7 in Super Bowl 55.  No team has ever played in a Super Bowl on their own home field before.

The Packers (14-4) picked a bad time to play their worst game of the season, seeing their seven-game winning streak come to an end. [Read more…]

Packers one win away from Super Bowl

January 17, 2021 By Bill Scott

8,456 fans at Lambeau Field on Saturday

Aaron Rodgers passed for 296 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 32-18 win over the Los Angeles Rams, advancing to next Sunday’s NFC Championship game at Lambeau Field.

It’s Rodgers fifth appearance in the NFC title game, but the first at Lambeau Field.  It’s also the second time in two years that Matt LaFleur has led the Packers to the NFC Championship game.  The Packers lost last years NFC title game 37-20 to San Francisco.

The Packers used all three of their running backs on Saturday.  With the Rams trying to take Davante Adams away, the Packers used a heavy ground attack to rush for 188 yards on 36 carries, a 5.2 yards per carry average with two touchdowns.

Aaron Jones led the way with 99 yards on 14 carries and a score.  Jamal Williams added 65 yards on 12 carries and A.J. [Read more…]

Packers Use Home Field To Crush Titans

December 28, 2020 By Bill Scott

#28 AJ Dillon

The Green Bay Packers showed the rest of the NFL what they could be in store for if the NFC playoffs come through Lambeau Field in their entirety.

A day that was filled with snow and cold, the Packers dominated the Tennessee Titans 40-14, improving to 12-3 on the season.  The Packers are one win away on Sunday afternoon in Chicago to clinch a first round bye and top billing in the NFC playoffs.

The Packers played their most complete game of the season, racking up 448 yards of offense and seeing their defense hold Titans running back Derek Henry under 100-yards (98 yards) with no touchdowns.  Henry entered the game with a league best 1,679 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill was just 11 of 24 for 121 yards and a touchdown and threw a pair of interceptions.

Aaron Rodgers wasn’t bothered by the snow and cold at all.  In fact, he embraced it, on the way to a four touchdown day.  Rodgers completed 21 of 25 for 231 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.  Three of his four scoring strikes went to Davante Adams, who finished with 11 receptions for 142 yards. Packers Have Seven Players Voted To 2020 NFC Pro Bowl Team

December 22, 2020 By Bill Scott

David Bakhtiari

The Green Bay Packers had seven players named to the 2020 NFC Pro Bowl team on Monday.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers headlines the squad as the starting quarterback.  It marks the ninth Pro Bowl selection of his career, tying Brett Favre and the late Forrest Gregg for the most Pro Bowl selections as a Packer.  Rodgers leads the league in passer rating (118.0), passing touchdowns (40) and fewest interceptions thrown (four – min. 350 pass attempts).

Davante Adams was voted to his fourth straight NFC Pro Bowl squad, making him only the second Packers WR to earn four-plus consecutive Pro Bowls.  James Lofton made six straight appearances from 1980-85.  Adams leads the league in receptions per game (8.2) and receiving yards per game (98.8) and ranks No. 2 in receiving TD’s with 14.  He posted those numbers despite missing 2+ games because of injury.

David Bakhtiari earned his third trip to the Pro Bowl and his second straight as an original selection.  He’s joined by fellow offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins, who earned his first selection.  Jenkins became the Packers first offensive lineman to start a game at guard, center and tackle in the same season since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Packers Fast Start Is Enough To Beat Carolina

December 20, 2020 By Bill Scott

Aaron Jones

Aaron Jones rushed 20 times for 145 yards and a touchdown to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 24-16 win over the Carolina Panthers on Saturday night at Lambeau Field.

The Packers scored touchdowns on their first three possessions and jumped out to a 21-3 halftime lead.  But they managed just three points and 49 total offensive yards in the second half and held off the Panthers to improve to 11-3 on the season.

Mason Crosby sealed the victory with a 51-yard field goal to put the Packers up two scores with 3:39 left to play.  Crosby is a perfect 16-for-16 in the field goal department this season.

At the moment, the path to the Super Bowl still goes through Lambeau Field, but the Packers will need to win one of their two remaining games to clinch home field advantage throughout.

The Packers host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday night at Lambeau Field and then finish up at Chicago against the rival Bears.

Aaron Rodgers passed for just 143 yards and a touchdown, completing 20 of 29 passes.   He also rushed for a touchdown.  The touchdown pass was the 40th of the season for Rodgers, who became the only quarterback in NFL history to pass for 40 or more touchdowns three times.

Davante Adams had seven catches but totaled just 42 yards.

Rodgers, Adams lead Packers past Eagles

December 7, 2020 By Bill Scott

Packers RB Aaron Jones

Aaron Rodgers passed for 295 yards and three touchdowns and Davante Adams caught 10 passes for 121 yards and two scores to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 30-16 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

The second of Adams two touchdown catches was a 9-yard, catch and run, stiff-arming Eagles corner Darius Slay for the final five yards, was the 400th of Rodgers career.  The Packers superstar signal caller became the quickest quarterback in NFL history to reach 400 career touchdown passes, reaching the milestone in his 193rd game.  New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees needed 205 games to reach 400.

Rodgers three touchdown passes gives him 36 for the season, his fifth season with at least 35 touchdown passes.  No other quarterback in NFL history has accomplished that feat.

Rodgers doesn’t have any of his previous century-mark touchdown balls.  Hours before kickoff, Adams made sure all of the receivers/running backs knew that the game ball used for 400, would go right to Rodgers.

Adams, who finished with 997 receiving yards for the second time in his career last season, surpassed the 1,000 yard mark to go along with 13 touchdowns and still has four more games left in the regular season.  To make those numbers even more impressive, Adams missed 2 1/2 games with an ankle injury. Packers remain winless against winning teams (AUDIO)

November 23, 2020 By Bill Scott

Marquez Valdes-Scantling

For only the second time this season, the Green Bay Packers faced a team with a winning record and lost.  After scoring 28-points in the first half and leading 28-14 at halftime, the Packers (7-3) went on to lose to the Indianapolis Colts (7-3) 34-31 in overtime on Sunday.

The loss dropped the Packers out of the top position in the NFC playoff picture, still with six games left.

The Packers played arguably their best half of football this season in the first half, then played one of their worst in the second half.

Aaron Rodgers completed 27 of 38 for 311 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.  His favorite target, Davante Adams, caught seven passes for 106 yards and a score.  But the Packers ground attack managed just 66 yards on 18 carries with Aaron Jones finishing with 41 yards on 10 carries.
