Packers top 5 wide receivers join Aaron Rodgers as no-shows

May 26, 2021 By Bill Scott

Jordan Love

Not only has quarterback Aaron Rodgers failed to report for the start of the Green Bay Packers voluntary organized team activities (OTAs), but the first workout open to reporters on Tuesday saw the team’s top five veteran receivers skip out as well.

Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Allen Lazard, Equanimeous St. Brown and Devin Funchess were all missing.  In all, 10 of the 89 players on the roster weren’t on the field for practice.  In addition to Rodgers and the receivers, Jaire Alexander, David Bakhtiari, Ka’dar Hollman and Stanford Samuels were no-shows.  Josiah Deguara, Kevin King and Blake Bortles were present but either didn’t participate or were very limited.

Did the wide receivers fail to show up as a move of solidarity in support of Rodgers?  Coach Matt LaFleur said he recently talked with all five and didn’t feel it was a coordinated effort.  But missing all five certainly seems fishy. [Read more…]

King to return to Packers on a one-year deal

March 23, 2021 By Bill Scott

Kevin King

The Green Bay Packers have elected to bring back one of their own free agents, giving veteran corner Kevin King a one-year deal worth $6 million.  The deal was reported by the NFL Network on Tuesday morning.

King played in 11 regular season games and two playoff games last season, missing time with injuries during the regular season.  Staying healthy has been a problem for King, missing 23 of a possible 64 regular-season games during his four seasons in Green Bay.

King had a nightmare NFC Championship game and had no interceptions and just five pass breakups in 13 games last season.

The Packers have fellow corner Jaire Alexander and safeties Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage under contract.  They’ve also submitted a restricted free agent tender to keep slot corner Chandon Sullivan around for another season.  Now King provides more experienced depth to the Packers secondary heading into the NFL Draft in April.

Packers season comes to an end in NFC Championship

January 25, 2021 By Bill Scott

After working all season to secure a first round playoff bye and home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, the Green Bay Packers season came to an end in the NFC Championship game, falling to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-26 on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Tom Brady threw for 280 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions and will play in his 10th Super Bowl in two weeks, this time on his own home field in Tampa.  Brady will be in search of his seventh Super Bowl title.  To get there, the Bucs had to beat three division winners, including the Packers on Sunday.

The Buccaneers (14-5) will face the Kansas City Chiefs (16-2) on Feb. 7 in Super Bowl 55.  No team has ever played in a Super Bowl on their own home field before.

The Packers (14-4) picked a bad time to play their worst game of the season, seeing their seven-game winning streak come to an end. [Read more…]

Live tackling is a question mark for the Packers

August 20, 2020 By Bill Scott

Matt LaFleur

With the Green Bay Packers and every other NFL team not getting preseason games, it is assumed they’ll use some of their padded practice work on live tackling.

Asked about how much live tackling the Packers expected to do, head coach Matt LaFleur said he’s really not sure.  The Packers coach seemed to have reservations about putting his veteran players through live tackling, opting instead to make sure they stay as healthy as possible heading into the regular season.  LaFleur said he would more than likely put his rookies and young players through some live tackling work.

NFL teams had the number of padded practices reduced from 16 to 14 in this training camp, but LaFleur [Read more…]

Packers routed by 49ers for second time this season

January 20, 2020 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

The Green Bay Packers knew San Francisco wanted to run the football, but they offered little in terms of stopping or even slowing the 49ers down.  The result was another lopsided contest between the two teams this season.

In November, the Packers fell behind 23-0 at halftime and went on to lose 37-8 at Levi Stadium.  On Sunday, the Packers fell behind 27-0 at halftime and lost 37-20 in the NFC Championship game.

The 49ers ran just 50 total plays from scrimmage and 42 of the 50 were running plays.  When asked why he kept calling run plays, San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said because it kept working.

The Niners racked up 285 yards on the ground.  Raheem Mostert finished with 29 carries for 220 yards and four touchdowns.  They only needed quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to hand off.  He finished 6 of 8 through the air, for 77 yards.

The Packers struggled to get their offense going in the first half, totaling 51 yards rushing and 65 passing.  It wasn’t until the second half, that Aaron Rodgers would start to move the offense.  He finished [Read more…]

Packers parting company with Jones

August 25, 2019 By Bill Scott

Josh Jones

Green Bay safety Josh Jones announced on Twitter Sunday morning that he is being released by the Packers.  Jones was the team’s second-round draft pick in the 2017 NFL draft and had sat out much of the off-season program after requesting a trade.

Jones hadn’t practiced since August 11 because of an illness.  He started five of the Packers last six games in 2018, finishing sixth in tackles with 60.

The Packers used Jones as a hybrid linebacker in 2018, but Jones said he didn’t consider himself a linebacker and wanted to play safety.

Jones had fallen behind Adrian Amos, Darnell Savage and Raven Greene.  Eventually even the play of free agents Will Redmond and Chandon Sullivan has dropped Jones further out of sight and out of mind.

The Packers will gain about $300,000 in salary cap space as a result of his release.

Jones reports to minicamp but future remains uncertain (AUDIO)

June 12, 2019 By Bill Scott

Josh Jones

Green Bay Packers safety Josh Jones reported to minicamp on Tuesday but stood on the sidelines and watch because of a hamstring injury.

Jones had been a no-show during the rest of the teams offseason program, including OTA’s.  Those sessions were voluntary.  Jones said he spent the last several weeks training in Florida, which is where he injured his hamstring.

Instead of working out with his teammates, Jones said he prefers working with his trainer in Florida, and he wanted to spend more time with family, especially his young daughter.

When asked if Jones wanted to be traded, Jones referred reporters to Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst.

Gutekunst met with reporters following Tuesday’s workout and left the door to a trade open. [Read more…]

Jones skips OTA, reportedly seeking a trade (AUDIO)

May 22, 2019 By Bill Scott

Josh Jones (27)

Josh Jones wasn’t happy with a lack of playing time last season and that frustration continued when the Green Bay Packers signed free agent safety Adrian Amos and selected Maryland’s Darnell Savage in the first round of the NFL Draft.  Expecting that his playing time won’t increase much with those personnel moves, Jones opted to skip the start of OTA’s this week.

Coach Matt LaFleur made sure to mention to reporters on Tuesday that OTA’s are “voluntary” under the league’s collective bargaining agreement, but it’s simply unheard of in today’s NFL for a player to miss the teams off-season program without a legitimate reason.

LaFleur said he has not spoken with Jones and told reporters that Packers GM Brian Gutekunst would handle the situation.  LaFleur didn’t answer how he would handle the situation if Jones misses the teams mandatory minicamp, which starts on June 11.

Jones still has two years left on his original rookie contract, leaving him little bargaining power. [Read more…]

Nelson released by Raiders

March 15, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jordy Nelson

In December, the Oakland Raiders paid wide receiver Jordy Nelson a $3.6 million roster bonus, saying at the time that Nelson would return to the Raiders in 2019.

On Thursday, the Raiders released the former Packer after he caught 63 passes for 739 yards and three touchdowns during an injury-plagued season.

The additions of receiver Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams made Nelson expendable.

Nelson would have seen his base salary of $3 million for 2019 become fully guaranteed on Sunday.

Nelson spent the first 10 years of his career with the Packers. [Read more…]

Packers introduce four free agent acquisitions

March 15, 2019 By Bill Scott

Za’Darius Smith

The Green Bay Packers introduced their four free agent acquisitions on Thursday.  Pass rushers Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith, as well as safety Adrian Amos and offensive lineman Billy Turner signed new deals with the team this week.

The Packers doled out $182 million for the four, a figure that doesn’t include incentives and escalators.

Za’Darius Smith got $66 million in his deal, averaging $16.5 million a season.  That is second on the Packers roster, only to quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

With big money deals, come high expectations.

“All that really hasn’t sunk in yet, but I’m going to do my best,” Za’Darius Smith said.  “I’m going to do what I can do.  Coaches know what I’m capable of doing, so I’m going to continue to work hard.  Like I said, stay after practice, do the little things right.  What I’m bringing to this team is leadership, accountability.  I’m going to do the right thing and I’m going to continue to put up big numbers hopefully.”

Za’Darius Smith had 8 1/2 sacks in a contract year for the Baltimore Ravens last season. [Read more…]
