Sack celebrations a thing of the past in Green Bay

October 18, 2019 By Bill Scott

Za’Darius Smith

Za’Darius Smith is second on the Green Bay Packers team with six quarterback sacks and each one has drawn a more elaborate sack celebration.

“I had one for this week,” Smith said Thursday.  “It was going to be nice.  Coach (Matt LaFleur), he felt situations during that time could affect the punt team or (if) they want to go for fourth down, I’m taking up too much time.”

So for now, the sack celebrations are history.

Smith came up with the sleepy-time celebration that he unveiled Monday against the Lions after he missed a meeting last week.  He was fined and decided to let everyone know he got caught napping with a little on-field celebration.

Za’Darius Smith has six sacks in six games this season.  Teammate Preston Smith leads the way wit

h seven and even without a sack celebration, both should continue to cause havoc with the opponents passing game. [Read more…]

NFL Free Agency opens today

March 13, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers have until 3pm today to reach a deal with any of their seven soon-to-be free agents.  Without a deal by that deadline, the players will become unrestricted free agents and can negotiate with any other team in the league.

The top two in the Packers free agent class is center Scott Wells and defensive back/special teamer Jarrett Bush.

Packers general manager Ted Thompson has just shy of $7-million in salary cap space and he could be working on a deal to get Wells signed before the deadline.

Besides Wells and Bush, the Packers have five other players set to become free agents later today.  They are:  QB Matt Flynn, RB Ryan Grant, DE Howard Green, CB Pat Lee and LB Erik Walden.

Ryan Grant’s agent last week said his client will test the market, but the Packers have told him they would like to have him back.

Packers interested in Ryan Grant’s return?

March 7, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers have reportedly told running back Ryan Grant that

Ryan Grant

they are interested in having him back again next season but aren’t set to make him an offer before the start of free agency next Tuesday.

According to a report in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel today, Grant’s agent, Alan Herman said he has received word from the Packers  that they value the 29-year-old Grant and want him to return to the Packers roster.

Grant had 559 yards rushing and 268 yards receiving with 3 total touchdowns for the Packers last season.

Brandon Saine and James Starks return healthy for 2012.  Fourth-round pick Alex Green is recovering from a torn ACL and there’s no guarantee that he’ll be ready to go for the start of the upcoming season.

Packers don’t use tag on Flynn

March 6, 2012 By Bill Scott

The deadline to place a franchise or transition tag on pending free agents has

Matt Flynn

come and gone with the Green Bay Packers not tagging their backup quarterback Matt Flynn.

Had Packers general manager franchised Flynn without a deal in place, he have had to try to work out a trade after the start of free agency.  But first, Thompson would have had to find a way to clear several million dollars in salary cap space to fit Flynn’s $14.4-million guaranteed salary.  Then if he couldn’t find a trade partner, Thompson would have been stuck with a backup quarterback making as much as $6-million more than starter Aaron Rodgers. Packers: James Starks update!

November 21, 2011 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy isn’t ruling running back James Starks out of Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

Starks has a sprained knee and a sore ankle, leaving his availability in doubt for Thursday, but there’s a chance he could practice tomorrow.

AUDIO: Mike McCarthy on where Starks is at :04

Mike McCarthy said Starks was good on Sunday but did not practice today.  McCarthy said the injury wasn’t as bad as it appeared to be initially, and he’s holding out hope that Starks might be able to practice.

AUDIO: Mike McCarthy is holding out hope on Grant :12

Starks was a big part of the Packers’ success late last season and appears to be supplanting Ryan Grant as the team’s primary running back.
