Former Packer Flynn signs with New England

June 12, 2015 By Bill Scott

Without a team for months, former Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn has signed with the New England Patriots.

Flynn will compete for a job as Tom Brady’s backup.  He joins his fifth NFL team.  Besides the Packers, Flynn also spent time in Seattle, Buffalo and Oakland.  He was a seventh-round draft pick of the Packers back in 2008.

Flynn led the Packers to a 2-2 record in four starts during the 2013 season.  In six seasons with the Packers, Flynn started six games and threw for 2,227 yards, 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

The Packers are grooming former Badger Scott Tolzien to take over as Aaron Rodgers backup in Green Bay.

Packers to go with Flynn as Rodgers backup

September 1, 2014 By Bill Scott

After deciding to keep both Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien on the 53-man roster, Mike McCarthy is going with Flynn as his number-2 quarterback, going with experience in the opener on Thursday night in Seattle.

Flynn posted a 2-2 record for the Green Bay Packers last season when Aaron Rodgers was out with a collarbone injury.

The Packers knew there was a great chance that they would have lost Tolzien to another NFL team if they had exposed him to waivers.  Tolzien put up better numbers during training camp, but for now, the Packers value Flynn’s experience and Tolzien will serve as the number 3.

The Packers returned to the practice field on Sunday and will work in pads today.

Packers reduce roster to 53

The Green Bay Packers released a total of 18 players and placed tackle Aaron Adams, LB Nate Palmer, TE Jake Stoneburner and DT Khyri Thornton on injured reserve.

The Packers released S Chris Banjo, WR Kevin Dorsey, LB Jake Doughty, T John Fullington, C Garth Gerhart, WR Alex Gillett, DT Carlos Gray, RB Michael Hill, LB Adrian Hubbard, G Jordan McCray, S Tanner Miller, TE Justin Perillo, RB LaDarius Perkins, DE Luther Robinson, CB Jumal Rolle, T Jeremy Vujnovich, WR Myles White and CB Ryan White.

It means the Packers will start the season with three quarterbacks, keeping both Scott Tolzien and Matt Flynn as backups behind Aaron Rodgers.  It’s not certain who will be Rodgers immediate backup.

Cutting Banjo means the Packers will go with four safeties, Morgan Burnett, Micah Hyde, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Sean Richardson.

At wide receiver, the Packers kept 7th round draft pick Jeff Janis.  Myles White, Kevin Dorsey and Alex Gillett were all competing for that fifth spot.

The Packers are also going with four running backs total, including fullback John Kuhn.  James Starks and DuJuan Harris are backups to Eddie Lacy.

The Packers return to practice on Sunday as they begin full preparations for Thursday’s season opener at Seattle.

Tolzien and Flynn both play well in finale

August 29, 2014 By Bill Scott

Scott Tolzien and Matt Flynn both tossed a pair of touchdowns as the Green Bay Packers knocked off the Kansas City Chiefs 34-14 in the preseason finale at Lambeau Field.

Who wins the right to back up Aaron Rodgers?  And can the Packers afford the luxury of keeping three quarterbacks?

Certainly, the decision will be a difficult one, even more so if the Packers decide they can only hang on to one of the two.  But it’s a healthier scenario than the past couple of seasons when Graham Harrell, BJ Coleman and Vince Young were trying to compete for the backup job.

Flynn completed 7 of 15 for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Tolzien was 12 of 18 for 139 yards and two touchdowns.

Flynn has performed well in training camp, but when it came to performing in games, Tolzien won that battle.  But what Flynn has on his side is history.  He helped the Packers win just enough last season to allow Aaron Rodgers to return and put the Packers in the playoffs.  That may be a security blanket the Packers won’t want to part with.

But that doesn’t make Flynn sleep any better.

The last time the Packers kept three quarterbacks was 2008.  It may be a luxury the Packers can’t afford.  So who stays if the Packers can only keep two.

It’s really a matter of comfort for Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy.  Tolzien has developed well under Mike McCarthy’s teaching.  He’s younger, has a stronger arm and may be ready for his first opportunity.  If the Packers let him go, there’s a good chance he won’t be around to come back to the Packers practice squad.  He’s more likely to be signed by another team.

Packers must find Aaron Rodgers backup

August 28, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers face the Kansas City Chiefs in the final preseason exhibition at Lambeau Field tonight.  It’ll be the last chance for Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien to show Mike McCarthy why they deserve to be Aaron Rodgers backup this season.

Some believe the Packers could name one of the two the backup and keep the other around as the 3rd string quarterback.  But others believe other positions on the 53-man roster will be more valuable than having an extra quarterback around.

Years ago teams used to carry three quarterbacks with regularity, but that approach has changed.  Instead, teams like the Packers find more value in keeping an extra linebacker, tight end or receiver to help bolster special teams.

The last time the Packers went into the regular season was 2008 when Flynn as a rookie, beat out another rookie Brian Brohm.

Scott Tolzien has by far put up better numbers in preseason games, but Flynn has history on his side.  The new practice squad rules do allow for Tolzien to land on the Packers practice squad again.  But he would have to be exposed to waivers and he could sign with any other team.

The Packers went 2-2-1 in games that Flynn played in last season.  That kind of history will certainly weigh heavily when the Packers make their decision.

Flynn is expected to start tonight but will split time with Tolzien in their last attempt to prove that they belong.

The Packers and Chiefs kick off at 6pm tonight at Lambeau Field.  Following the game, the Packers will have to start trimming their roster from the current 75 players, down to 53.

Flynn faces former team tonight

August 22, 2014 By Bill Scott

Matt Flynn’s first chance to be a starter in the NFL came with Seattle.  Unfortunately for him, the Seahawks selected Russell Wilson in the draft and the former Badgers quicly wrestled the position away from Flynn.

Flynn was then traded to Oakland, but just like his time in Seattle, Flynn couldn’t keep the starting job, eventually being beaten out by Terrelle Pryor.

Now Flynn is back in Green Bay, competing with Scott Tolzien for the backup job to Aaron Rodgers.  At this point, the battle is too close to call with two preseason games left.

After Tolzien went second last week, Flynn is expected to follow Aaron Rodgers tonight against the Raiders.

In the first two games, Tolzien has generated more yardsa and first downs than Flynn, but less points.  Tozlien has led the Packers to six points, while Flynn is responsible for 18.

A younger quarterback might be foaming at the mouth, trying to get back at his old team (Raiders).  Not Flynn.  “No, not really.  It’s still a preseason game.  I still have friends on the team.  I don’t have any bad flood.”

AUDIO: Flynn says he won’t be playing with a chip :19

While Flynn and Tolzien are battling for the backup job, it’s still possible the Packers could keep three quarterbacks instead of two.

Tuesday and re-signed with the Green Bay Packers.

Flynn becomes the seventh unrestricted free agent to re-sign with the Packers.  Flynn will compete for the backup job behind Aaron Rodgers with former Badger Scott Tolzien and a rookie quarterback that will likely be added during or right after the draft.

Flynn resigned with the Packers last November and he saved the Packers when Aaron Rodgers went down with an injury.  Flynn helped the Packers rally from 16-points down to tie the Minnesota Vikings, then went 2-2 in the next four games before Rodgers returned to the lineup.

Flynn completed 61% of his passes for 1,146 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions.

The Packers could still go with Scott Tolzien as Aaron Rodgers backup, but he’ll have to beat out Flynn for the job.

McCarthy discusses plans for upcoming season

March 26, 2014 By Bill Scott

At the NFL owners meetings on Tuesday, Green Bay Packers head coach

Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy revealed the Packers plan to move tackle Bryan Bulaga back to right tackle, allowing David Bakhtiari, who is entering his second NFL season, to stay on the left side.

McCarthy also told reporters that defensive back Micah Hyde will be on the field all of the time.  McCarthy didn’t reveal where Hyde would line up, but said he deserved the opportunity to compete.

McCarthy said the Packers will report for off-season workouts on April 22nd and said there will be changes to the training camp schedule.  The coach didn’t discuss those changes, but said he didn’t like the way the team came out of camp last year.

McCarthy also said he would like to see the Packers resign backup QB Matt Flynn and fullback John Kuhn.

Rodgers is ruled out for 7th straight game

December 21, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers are once again moving forward without their top quarterback, Aaron Rodgers.  The decision is described as “an

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers

organizational decision” and it means it’ll be up to Matt Flynn to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers at Lambeau Field on Sunday to keep the Packers playoff hopes alive.

Mike McCarthy declined to say who made the ultimate call on Rodgers, but that he supported the decision.

Sunday will mark seven weeks since the injury (broken collarbone) occurred.  Rodgers has been practicing on a limited basis since late last month, even taking some of the reps with the number 1 offense for the last couple of weeks.

In Rodgers seven starts, the Packers went 5-2 while averaging 30.3 points and 438.9 yards.  Without Rodgers, the Packers have gone 2-3-1 while averaging 20.2 points and 362.8 yards a game.

The numbers have gone down, but the way the Packers play the game hasn’t changed.  The Packers still throw the ball with Matt Flynn and they have 1,000 yard rusher Eddie Lacy to pound the ball on the ground and he gets better with every game.

Rodgers ruled out for Steelers game

December 20, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers have once again ruled Aaron Rodgers out for Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Lambeau Field.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said, “As we do every week, a lot of conversation about Aaron.  As an organization, we feel we are not ready for him to play.  He is not medically cleared.  Still the case today.  As an organization, we feel this is not the time for him.”

McCarthy said he thought Rodgers did everything possible he could do.  McCarthy said, “Obviously this is an organizational decision.  As an organization Aaron Rodgers is not ready to play.  I’m not going to get into ifs and who’s.”

It means Matt Flynn will start again this week for the Packers.  Flynn has won the last two games, including his four touchdown performance in last week’s come-from-behind win over Dallas.

The Packers control their own destiny right now.  If they win both remaining games, they’ll win the NFC North and earn a spot in the playoffs for the 5th straight season.
