Nothing special about Green Bay special teams

The Green Bay Packers got off to a decent start on special teams this past season, but the unit took a nose dive in the second half and finished dead last according to the annual NFL special-teams rankings released on Friday by the Dallas Morning News.

The Packers suffered five of their seven blocked kicks in games 10-16.  Punter Tim Masthay had his worst season in Green Bay and the kickoff return unit struggled.

Green Bay’s Micah Hyde did return two punts for touchdowns and kicker Mason Crosby had another outstanding season.

The Dallas Morning News special teams rankings don’t include playoff games, but that didn’t stop the Packers from continuing their struggles in the playoffs. [Read more…]

Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles was supposed to be a measuring stick for the Green Bay Packers.  Afterall, they had yet to beat a team considered to be a solid playoff contender yet this season.  Their test against the Eagles was supposed to give us some answers about Mike McCarthy’s team.

There’s still more tests to take and more measuring to be done, but the Packers passed their first test with flying colors, rolling to a 53-20 win over the Eagles at Lambeau Field.

The Packers put together 50+ point performances in each of the last two games and that is a franchise record.

Aaron Rodgers passed for 341 yards and three touchdowns, extending his streak of touchdown passes without an interception in home games to 29.  Rodgers has thrown 322 consecutive passes at home without throwing a pick, surpassing New England Patriot Tom Brady’s record of 288 for the longest streak in NFL history. Clinton-Dix Contract

Packers rookie first-round draft pick Ha Ha Clinton-Dix has reportedly agreed to a contract with the team.  While financial terms weren’t available, it’s likely a four-year deal and could include a club optional fifth year.

Clinton-Dix was taken with the 21st pick in the first round.  Last year’s 21st pick, Cincinnati tight end Tyler Eifert, sighed a four-year deal worth $8.256 million and received a signing bonus worth $4.38 million.

Jermichael Finley

While Jermichael Finley’s locker inside the Green Bay lockerroom still has his name plate above, Finley is an unrestricted free agent and after more tests, has been cleared for football activities.

Finley’s agent, Blake Baratz told ProFootballTalk.com that Finley has a team visit lined up for Friday, but declined to unveil that team. [Read more…]

McCarthy discusses plans for upcoming season

March 26, 2014 By Bill Scott

At the NFL owners meetings on Tuesday, Green Bay Packers head coach

Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy revealed the Packers plan to move tackle Bryan Bulaga back to right tackle, allowing David Bakhtiari, who is entering his second NFL season, to stay on the left side.

McCarthy also told reporters that defensive back Micah Hyde will be on the field all of the time.  McCarthy didn’t reveal where Hyde would line up, but said he deserved the opportunity to compete.

McCarthy said the Packers will report for off-season workouts on April 22nd and said there will be changes to the training camp schedule.  The coach didn’t discuss those changes, but said he didn’t like the way the team came out of camp last year.

McCarthy also said he would like to see the Packers resign backup QB Matt Flynn and fullback John Kuhn.

get a long look at their backups, players trying to win a spot on the 53-man roster.

The result was a sloppy 30-8 loss to the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

The Packers acknowledged after the game that Don Barclay has won the right tackle job, which was expected.  Players that stood out, Chris Banjo and Micah Hyde on defense and Jeremy Ross on offense.

Now the Packers have to reduce their roster from 75 to 53 players by 5pm Saturday. [Read more…]

Packers go defense with both picks in the 5th round

April 27, 2013 By Bill Scott

After bolstering the offensive side of the football with four of their first five picks, the Packers turned to defense with both picks in the 5th round.

The first 5th round pick, #159 overall, for GM Ted Thompson was Iowa corner back Micah Hyde.

Hyde was the defensive back of the year in the Big Ten in 2012 and a Big Ten all first-team selection by both the coaches and the media.  In 2011, he picked up 2nd team all-Big ten recognition by the coaches. He was also a punt returner finishing 4th in the conference at 7.4 yards a return in 2012.

Hyde’s size is definitely a plus and fits in the Ted Thompson drafting mode.  He is listed at abut 6’1″ and 200-pounds.  The Packers usually lean towards physical defensive backs.

With their 2nd 5th round pick, #167 overall, the Packers went to the defensive line and added Mississippi State’s Josh Boyd. Boyd stands at 6’3″ and weighs 300-pounds.

Boyd played all four-years with the Bulldogs appearing in 51-games compiling 8 1/2 sacks.  His best year was his Junior season, when he had a career best 4.5 sacks and 8-tackles for loss.
