The Green Bay Packers released defensive lineman Josh Boyd among other personnel moves on Monday.

Boyd spent the 2015 season on injured reserve after suffering ligament damage in his broken ankle during the Packers’ home opener against Seattle.

Boyd was originally the first of two choices by the Packers in the fifth round (167th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft, played in 26 games with four starts over three seasons with the Packers.

The Packers also released Practice-squad offensive tackle Jeremy Vujnovich, as well as undrafted rookies DT William Campbell, TE David Grinnage and WR Dennis Parks.

One day after Green Bay’s 27-17 win over the Seattle Seahawks, the Packers have lost another player to injury for the season.

The Packers announced a roster move this afternoon, signing linebacker Joe Thomas, who was cut by the Packers at the end of training camp, then spent the first two weeks of the season on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.

To make room the Packers placed DT Josh Boyd on season ending injured reserve.

Boyd suffered a broken ankle in Sunday’s win over the Seahawks after playing just three defensive snaps in the game.  Boyd was down on the field for a while before being carted off the field.  Boyd was drafted by the Packers in the fifth round of the 2013 draft and played a combined 24 games over the last two years, including four starts a season ago.

Raji with torn bicep, out for the season

B.J. Raji rushes against J.C. Tretter in Training Camp practice.

If the Green Bay Packers are going to repeat as NFC North Division champions, they’re going to have to do it without nose tackle B.J. Raji.

The Packers haven’t made any official announcement but a source indicates that Raji did suffer the injury early in Friday night’s 31-21 win over the Oakland Raiders in exhibition play.  NFL.com initially reported Raji was believed to have torn his biceps.

The Packers re-signed Raji in the off-season for one-year at $4 million.  Prior to last night’s injury, Raji had been having a very good training camp, getting back into the swing of things at the nose after playing end a lot last season.

In the short-term, the Packers look to second-year nose tackle Josh Boyd, free-agent Letroy Guion and undrafted rookie Mike Pennel, who has had a good training camp, pushing for a spot on the roster.

Guion has missed the entire training camp with a hamstring injury and was projected to open the season on the P.U.P. list.  Raji’s injury could however force the Packers to bring Guion along sooner.

Veteran Ryan Pickett is still available as well.  He turns 35 in October and said he still wants to play and would love to come back to Green Bay.

Nelson sidelined by hamstring injury

August 12, 2014 By Bill Scott

Jordy Nelson

Jordy Nelson

What was originally believed to be a day off on Saturday night, it was learned that wide receiver Jordy Nelson’s absence from the Green BayPackers preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans had to do with a hamstring injury that he suffered in practice last Thursday.

Nelson missed four games with a hamstring injury in 2012 and it continued to affect him throughout the second half of the season.

Nelson missed twelve practices and three preseason games last year after undergoing knee surgery, but he played in all 17 games last season.

Nelson signed a four-year contract extension with the Packers at the start of training camp worth nearly $40 million.

Nelson wasn’t the only player sidelined by injury as the Packers returned to practice yesterday.  Rookie receiver Davante Adams was sidelined by a wrist injury.  Running back Rajion Neal and linebacker Joe Thomas suffered knee injuries in Saturday’s game but aren’t believed to be serious.

Defensive lineman Josh Boyd watched from the sidelines after suffering a rib injury in Saturday’s game.

Packers go defense with both picks in the 5th round

April 27, 2013 By Bill Scott

After bolstering the offensive side of the football with four of their first five picks, the Packers turned to defense with both picks in the 5th round.

The first 5th round pick, #159 overall, for GM Ted Thompson was Iowa corner back Micah Hyde.

Hyde was the defensive back of the year in the Big Ten in 2012 and a Big Ten all first-team selection by both the coaches and the media.  In 2011, he picked up 2nd team all-Big ten recognition by the coaches. He was also a punt returner finishing 4th in the conference at 7.4 yards a return in 2012.

Hyde’s size is definitely a plus and fits in the Ted Thompson drafting mode.  He is listed at abut 6’1″ and 200-pounds.  The Packers usually lean towards physical defensive backs.

With their 2nd 5th round pick, #167 overall, the Packers went to the defensive line and added Mississippi State’s Josh Boyd. Boyd stands at 6’3″ and weighs 300-pounds.

Boyd played all four-years with the Bulldogs appearing in 51-games compiling 8 1/2 sacks.  His best year was his Junior season, when he had a career best 4.5 sacks and 8-tackles for loss.
