Packers add 49ers DL Dial

September 6, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers added more depth on their defensive line and they turned to the free agent market to do it.  They signed former San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Quinton Dial.

The 6’5, 318 pound Dial is expected to be ready to practice with his new team today as the Packers return to work to get ready for Sunday’s game against Seattle at Lambeau Field.

Dial becomes the seventh veteran free agent that general manager Ted Thompson has signed from another team this year.  He joins another former 49er, Ahmad Brooks, who was just signed by the Packers this week.

Dial was a 2013 fifth-round draft pick out of Alabama.  The Packers released defensive tackle Christian Ringo to make room for Dial on the roster.  He’s expected to back up starter Kenny Clark at nose tackle.  The Packers will likely try to resign Ringo to their practice squad.

Dial gives the Packers the depth they were looking for after they released veteran Letroy Guion.

Packers release DL Letroy Guion

August 8, 2017 By Bill Scott

Letroy Guion

The Green Bay Packers announced the release of troubled defensive lineman Letroy Guion on Tuesday.  The move comes two days before the teams first preseason game, Thursday night against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lambeau Field.

Guion played in 44 regular season games and started 35 of them over three seasons for the Packers.  He also appeared in seven playoff games with five starts.

Guion was set to serve a four game suspension to start the upcoming season and has a DUI case pending from a June incident in Hawaii.  A police report showed Guion’s blood alcohol level was 0.86 percent about an hour after his early morning arrest on June 21 in Waikiki. [Read more…]

DT Francois signs one-year deal with Packers

March 23, 2017 By Bill Scott

Ricky Jean Francois tweeted this picture this afternoon, saying “My new home don’t look so bad”

Free agent defensive tackle Ricky Jean Francois has signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Green Bay Packers today.  The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Packers were looking for depth on the defensive line after Letroy Guion was hit with a four-game suspension to start the season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.  The Packers did restructure Guion’s contract after the suspension was handed down, pushing roster bonuses into the regular season.

The Redskins released Ricky Jean Francois on March 15 to create cap room.  He spent two years with Washington, starting six games in 2016 and registering 1.5 sacks.

The 30-year old Jean Francois also spent two years with the Colts and four with the 49ers.  He was originally a 7th round draft pick of the 49ers in the 2009 draft.

Jean Francois has 12 sacks in 109 career NFL games.

Packers DT Letroy Guion suspended for PED’s

March 7, 2017 By Bill Scott

Letroy Guion

The NFL announced on Tuesday that Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Letroy Guion will miss the first four games of the upcoming 2017 season for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

It’s the second time Guion has been suspended for violating the substance-abuse policy.  He sat out the first three games of 2015 after being arrested for possession of marijuana in his hometown of Starke, Florida.

Guion just finished the first year of a three-year contract that would pay him a total of $11.25 million.  According to ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky, a source said Guion and the team have agreed to restructure the remaining two years of the deal.  Guion was scheduled to earn roster bonuses of $400,000 later this week and on May 2, but it’s likely those have been delayed until after the suspension. Packers sign G Lane Taylor

March 8, 2016 By Bill Scott

Packers logoLane Taylor started two games and played in a total of six last season, but the Green Bay Packers still felt he showed enough to sign him to a two-year contract.

Taylor signed a two-year deal for a reported $4.15-million, including a $600,000 signing bonus, plus an incentive package that could add another $1-million.

Taylor started at right guard in Week 10 against Detroit, playing for starting guard T.J. Lang, who was inactive because of a shoulder injury.  Taylor started the regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings at left guard for Josh Sitton, who moved over to left tackle.

Taylor was an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State.  He gives the Packers some insurance in case they lost either Lang or Sitton, whose contracts both expire after the upcoming season.

Taylor becomes the fourth player general manager Ted Thompson re-signed before the start of free agency, joining Mike Daniels, Letroy Guion and kicker Mason Crosby.

Report: Packers sign DT Letroy Guion to three-year deal

February 12, 2016 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers have now secured two of their talented defensive lineman before the start of free agency.

After signing Mike Daniels to a four-year, $41 million extension during the season, an ESPN Report says the Packers signed defensive tackle Letroy Guion to a three-year deal worth $11.25 million.

The 28-year-old Guion missed the first three games of the 2015 season, serving a suspension as a result of an off-season arrest last February.  Guion wound up pleading no contest to possession of marijuana and paid a $5,000 fine.

Those issues led to Guion playing last season on a one-year deal worth $2.75 million.  Following his suspension, Guion played in every game for the Packers last season, including the playoffs.

Guion finished the regular season with 21 tackles, but he failed to record a sack.

B.J. Raji, the Packers started nose tackle last season, is set to become a free agent in March.

McCarthy refuses comment on Guion report

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel published a report on Sunday, detailing the gun and drug charges in February that led to Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Letroy Guion’s three-game suspension to begin the season.

The story also explored earlier domestic violence incidents involving a number of parties, including the mother of his child.

The newspaper attempted to get comments from Guion, coach Mike McCarthy and general manager Ted Thompson but all three declined during the actual reporting of the story.  The newspaper again attempted Monday to speak with Thompson but was denied.

A JS reporter asked Mike McCarthy during his Monday news conference for a comment and the coach had this to say.

Guion returned to the field on October 4th, following his suspension and has played three games since.

Packers sign Gaston to practice squad

October 7, 2015 By Bill Scott

Packers logoJust days after releasing him to make room for wide receiver Jared Abbrederis on the 53-man roster, the Green Bay Packers have signed defensive lineman Bruce Gaston to their practice squad.

Gaston made the 53-man roster coming out of training camp and was on the team for the first three games.  He played in two of the three games and registered one tackle.

Gaston takes Abbrederis’ spot on the practice squad.  He became the odd-man out on the roster when defensive tackle Letroy Guion returned from the suspended list last week and then the Packers decided they needed to add Abbrederis to the 53-man roster.

Packers face 49ers today!

October 3, 2015 By Bill Scott

Jared Abbrederis

Jared Abbrederis

The Green Bay Packers are in San Francisco today to face a 49ers defense that has surrendered 90 points in the last two games.  The Packers should make that total grow at a rapid pace.  Only Arizona in the N-F-C has scored more points than the Packers in the first three weeks of the season.

The Packers have promoted former Wisconsin standout wide receiver Jared Abbrederis from the practice squad, releasing DT Bruce Gaston.  Abbrederis has struggled with injuries in his first two N-F-L seasons but expects to bolster a receiving corps which is expected to be without injured wide receiver Davante Adams.  Adams is listed as doubtful for today’s game with a sprained ankle.

Safety Morgan Burnett is also listed as doubtful.  Veteran defensive lineman Letroy Guion is ready to go after missing three games due to a suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Kickoff this afternoon is set for 3:25 p-m Central time.

Guion loses his appeal with the NFL

August 27, 2015 By Bill Scott

Letroy Guion

Letroy Guion

Letroy Guion has been suspended without pay for the first three games of the 2015 season, losing his appeal with the NFL.

The penalty is the result of his offseason arrest in which police seized more than $190,000 in cash, 357 grams of marijuana and an unloaded gun in his truck.

Guion was notified of the three-game ban this week.

The Packers have been preparing themselves for a suspension ever since his arrest but they were hoping for only a game or two after Guion paid a $5,000 fine in a plea deal to avoid prosecution.

Guion stands to lose nearly a half-million dollars in salary as a result of the suspension.  He is a projected starter at defensive end this season, which means the Packers will have to find a replacement for the first three games.
