Packers reportedly releasing Mike Daniels

July 24, 2019 By Bill Scott

Mike Daniels

One day after signing defensive tackle Dean Lowry to a three-year contract extension, the Green Bay Packers are reportedly releasing former Pro Bowler Mike Daniels on the eve of training camp.

The move was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Daniels was set to make $8.5 million this year, including a reported $7.6 million in base salary.

Their was speculation about such a move since the start of the Packers offseason program.  The Packers reportedly tried to trade Daniels but couldn’t work out a deal.

The play of Tyler Lancaster at the end of last season could have played a role in the teams comfort level in releasing Daniels.

Packers dealing with more injuries as they prepare for Vikings

November 20, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mike Daniels

As the Green Bay Packers get ready to face the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night at U.S. Bank Stadium, they may have to add some defensive line help.

Defensive tackle Mike Daniels left Thursday’s game at Seattle with a foot injury and Monday, coach Mike McCarthy said Daniels would likely miss a couple of weeks.  Down to four healthy defensive lineman, McCarthy said he and GM Brian Gutekunst were already discussing their options to potentially add another lineman.

Tight end Jimmy Graham also left that game with a broken thumb.  Coach Mike McCarthy said Graham plans to try to play on Sunday against the Vikings and will use the week to experiment with different splints to find out what works best for the game.

The Packers also lost backups Raven Greene and Bashaud Breeland to injury during last Thursday’s game.  McCarthy said the week will offer more clarity on who may be able to go Sunday night in Minnesota. [Read more…]

Packers getting healthier as they prepare to host Pittsburgh on Thursday

August 13, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mo Wilkerson is among those that returned to practice on Sunday.

The Green Bay Packers had a number of players return to the practice field on Sunday.

Defensive lineman Mike Daniels, corner Kevin King, left tackle David Bakhtiari and running back Aaron Jones all returned but didn’t take part in team drills.

Corner Jaire Alexander, WR Adonis-Jennings, fullback Joe Kerridge, WR Randall Cobb, TE Jimmy Graham and defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson all returned and took part in all drills.

The only three players that didn’t practice were WR Trevor Davis (hamstring), RB Devante Mays (hamstring) and safety Jermaine Whitehead (back).

The Packers hold their last open training camp practice of the week today (Monday).  The rest of the week is behind closed doors with the team set to play preseason game number two on Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Lambeau Field.

Packers have a tough day on Monday (AUDIO)

July 31, 2018 By Bill Scott

Jake Ryan

Less than a week into training camp, the Green Bay Packers have already suffered what appears to be at least their first major injury.

Linebacker Jake Ryan went down during an 11-on-11 drill, grabbing his knee in pain.

Blake Martinez spoke with Ryan right after practice and said the linebacker was devastated.

The Packers didn’t release any information on Ryan’s injury.  He’ll undergo an MRI today, to determine the seriousness of the injury and just how long he’ll be out.

Next up behind Ryan is rookie Oren Burks, who has played all of the positions in the first week of training camp.

Safety Kentrell Brice also was carted off with a leg injury and defensive end Mike Daniels left with early but said he’ll be OK.

The Packers will return to the practice field on Tuesday.

Daniels added to Pro Bowl

January 10, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mike Daniels (76)

Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Mike Daniels has been named to play in the Pro Bowl.  Daniels replaces Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams, who can’t play because of injury.

This will be Daniels first Pro Bowl trip after being named an alternate in each of the last three seasons.

Packers linebacker also underwent knee surgery last week, described as “a cleanup” by ESPN.

Packers blanked in Pro Bowl voting

December 20, 2017 By Bill Scott

Mike Daniels (76)

The Green Bay Packers didn’t have a single player named to the Pro Bowl.  They’re one of five teams that were shutout in the selection process, joining the New York Jets, Cleveland, Indianapolis and the Chicago Bears.

It was the first time since 2005 that the Packers didn’t have a single player voted to the Pro Bowl.

Players that were worthy of selection include wide receiver Davante Adams, as well as left tackle David Bakhtiari and defensive tackle Mike Daniels.

Adams ranks second in the NFL with 10 touchdown catches and he did it while missing starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers for seven games.  But the competition at wide receiver is high and can be one of the most difficult positions to crack.

Bakhtiari went to the Pro Bowl as an alternate last year but missed four games early in the season with a hamstring injury.  He was voted an alternate, but not a first alternate.

Daniels is joined by fullback Aaron Ripkowski as first alternates.  It’s the third time that Daniels has been named a Pro Bowl alternate.

Bakhtiari, Bulaga doubtful for tonight

September 28, 2017 By Bill Scott

Davon House ruled out of tonight’s game with Chicago.

Green Bay Packers starting tackles, David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga are both listed as doubtful for tonight’s game against the Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field.

Bakhtiari hasn’t played since the season opener against Seattle, when he strained his hamstring.  Bulaga aggravated his sore ankle in last Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

The problem for the Packers is depth.  Kyle Murphy (foot) and Jason Spriggs (hamstring) have both been placed on injured reserve.  Justin McCray got some playing time at right tackle but has little experience on the left side, which is where he will likely be if the two starters can’t go tonight.

Bakhtiari and Bulaga both practiced the last two days but both were limited.  Bakhtiari wants to make sure when he returns, he’s back for good.  Coming back too soon and then not being able to stay on the field isn’t something he wants to go through.

Adam Pankey started the season on the Packers practice squad.  There’s a chance he could be starting tonight as well.  The Packers added some backup help when they signed Ulrick John off of Arizona’s practice squad.

 Cobb set to return

It appears that wide receiver Randall Cobb will play on Thursday night.

On defense, both Nick Perry and Mike Daniels are questionable.  Perry would be playing with a club cast on his broken hand.

Davon House (quadriceps) is the only player that has been ruled out of the game.

Jean Francois returns to Green Bay, Spriggs to IR

September 22, 2017 By Bill Scott

David Bakhtiari remains sidelined with hamstring injury.

With Mike Daniels sidelined by a hip injury in Atlanta, the Green Bay Packers resigned veteran Ricky Jean Francois.  The Packers had released Jean Francois when they needed depth on their offensive line a week earlier.

Daniels hasn’t practiced all week and isn’t expected to play Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Jean Francois was on a plane to Dallas when the Packers called him back.  He returned to Lambeau Field and signed a contract on Thursday.

To make room on the roster, the Packers placed tackle Jason Spriggs on injured reserve.  Spriggs has been out since suffering a hamstring injury in week one against Seattle.

Spriggs must sit a minimum of eight weeks but would be eligible to return of the Packers decide to make that move.

Offensive tackle update

Right tackle Bryan Bulaga, who has missed the first two games of the season, has practiced both days this week and would appear set to return to the lineup against the Bengals on Sunday.

Left tackle David Bakhtiari missed both workouts on Wednesday and Thursday, making it less likely that he would return to the starting lineup on Sunday.

Injury depleted Packers have no answer for Falcons

September 18, 2017 By Bill Scott

Mercedes Benz Stadium

The Green Bay Packers were already playing without a significant disadvantage when both of their offensive tackles, David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga were held out of Sunday nights game in Atlanta.  Then  take away Mike Daniels (hamstring) and Jordy Nelson (quad) in the early part of the game and the task became next to impossible.

The Packers started the second half trailing 24-7 but had the ball.  That’s when quarterback Aaron Rodgers was hit from behind with his pass ruled behind the line of scrimmage.  Atlanta’s Desmond Trufant scooped up the loose ball and rumbled 15 yards for a touchdown that would put the Falcons up 31-7, on their way to a 34-23 victory over the Packers in the first game at new Mercedes Benz Stadium.

The Packers went with second year offensive lineman Kyle Murphy at left tackle and Justin McCray at right tackle.

Aaron Rodgers was sacked three times but hit several more.  He finished 33 of 50 for 343 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. [Read more…]
