March 7, 2019 By Bill Scott

Former Green Bay Packers fullback John Kuhn will retire as a Packer.

The longtime fan favorite played nine of his 12 seasons for the Packers, starting with the 2007 season.  Kuhn played his first season (2006) with the Pittsburgh Steelers.  He finished with the last two seasons (2016 & 2017) in New Orleans.

“John was a terrific football player and tremendous teammate who contributed to many years of success for the Packers,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said in a statement.  “He was a true professional whose work ethic and leadership set a great example both on the field and in the locker room.  We want to thank Kuhn and his family for all they did for the Packers and in the community as well as wish them nothing but the best.”

During his time with the Packers, Kuhn rushed for 601 yards on 196 carries and scored 15 touchdowns.  He was a three-time Pro Bowler with the Packers and was selected first-team All-Pro in 2014.

John Kuhn spent nine seasons as a fan favorite in Green Bay, but he didn’t get a new contract with the Packers after the organization decided to go with second year fullback Aaron Ripkowski.

The three-time Pro Bowl fullback signed a deal with the New Orleans Saints on Friday, making it the third team he will play for in his career.

Kuhn started with the Pittsburgh Steelers before signing with the Packers.  He was a Pro Bowler in each of his past two seasons and was voted a playoff captain by his teammates last season.

Kuhn continued working out, hoping to latch on with an NFL team.

Kush rushed for 601 yards and 15 touchdowns with the Packers.  He also caught 81 passes for 572 yards and eight touchdowns.

Green Bay Packers fans can get their first peek at the 2016-17 Green Bay Packers with the start of organized team activities (OTA’s) today.

The last month has been all about weight lifting, conditioning, diet and meetings.  Today, players and coaches will practice on Ray Nitschke Field (weather permitting), starting with an 11:30 a.m. practice.

The Packers will be without four rookies, who were drafted from schools that used the quarter system.  That means they can’t join their team until their schools graduate.

In the old days, whatever offseason workouts that took place, they did so with little fanfare.  Today is different.  Fans will fill the stands and be lined up along the fences, watching their favorite players and scouting out the team’s future. [Read more…]

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson tossed three first-half touchdown passes to lead Team Irvin to a 49-27 win over Team Rice in the NFL’s Pro Bowl game on Sunday in Hawaii.

The former Badger was the first player picked in the all-star game’s draft.  His touchdown passes went 14 yards to Atlanta’s Julio Jones, tw0-yards to Atlanta’s Devonta Freeman and 10-yards to Rams running back Todd Gurley.

Minnesota’s Teddy Bridgewater and Tampa Bay’s Jameis Winston each added two TD passes for Team Irvin.

Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews, guard Josh Sitton, fullback John Kuhn and linebacker Julius Peppers all played for Team Rice.  Matthews led the way with six tackles.  Kuhn caught three passes for 17 yards.

Packers associate head coach Winston Moss served as coach of Team Irvin, taking over for Mike McCarthy who stayed back home in Green Bay because of illness.

Rodgers pulls out of Pro Bowl game

January 21, 2016 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has pulled out of the NFL’s Pro Bowl game, citing an undisclosed injury on Wednesday.  Rodgers will be replaced by Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr.

Rodgers was on the Packers’ injury report with a right shoulder injury back in November but didn’t miss any playing time.

This was the fifth time that Rodgers was voted to the Pro Bowl, but he’s played in just two of the games, in 2009 and 2011.  He also pulled out of last year’s Pro Bowl after finishing the season with a torn calf muscle.

The Packers still have three players scheduled to play in the game: guard Josh Sitton, fullback John Kuhn and linebacker Clay Matthews.

Mike McCarthy and his coaching staff were also selected to coach one of the two teams in the January 31st All-Star game in Hawaii.

Green Bay Packers fullback John Kuhn is apparently heading to his third Pro Bowl.  Oakland fullback Marcel Reece has been suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy and Kuhn is the first alternate at the fullback position.

Kuhn remains a steady blocker in the Packers’ offense, with eight carries this season for 25 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Kuhn is expected to join Aaron Rodgers, Josh Sitton and Clay Matthews at the Pro Bowl game on January 31st in Honolulu.

The Green Bay Packers joined Atlanta and Carolina as the N-F-C’s only unbeaten teams after grinding out a 17-3 victory at San Francisco on Sunday.

Aaron Rodgers passed for 224 yards and a touchdown and John Kuhn rushed for a one-yard touchdown, but the Packers offense wasn’t on its “A” game.

The Packers did make it look easy at the start, moving 80-yards on the first possession, capping off a touchdown drive with a 9-yard scoring strike to Richard Rodgers.  The Packers would score only one more touchdown,  the short scoring run from Kuhn.

The Packers needed their defense at times in the past and didn’t get enough help.  Sunday they did.  The Packers defense not only sacked Colin Kaepernick six times, but they held him to 160 yards passing and 57 yards rushing.  They also held running back Carlos Hyde to 20 yards on eight carries.  That defense gave up 196 total yards, just 72 in the second half.
