September 3, 2016 By Bill Scott

Josh Sitton

Josh Sitton

The news was circulating around 2 p.m. central time on Saturday, about an hour before NFL teams had to  have their rosters trimmed to the league’s regular season limit of 53 players.  The team reportedly told All-Pro guard Josh Sitton that he was going to be released by the team, if they couldn’t find a trade partner before the deadline.

In the end, the Green Bay Packers couldn’t come up with a deal and released the eighth year pro.

There was speculation that Sitton was unhappy with his contract and was headed for a standoff.  Yet Sitton would later tell the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he was not making waves about his having one year left on his contract and was totally caught by surprised when notified by his agent on Saturday morning that he was being released. Ty Montgomery returns to practice.

Ty Montgomery returns to practice.

Three of the five remaining P.U.P. players returned to practice with the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday night.

Linebacker Sam Barrington, wide receiver Ty Montgomery and tight end Jared Cook all passed their physical and practiced for the first time in training camp.

Nelson to start training camp on the sidelines

July 25, 2016 By Bill Scott

Jordy Nelson

Jordy Nelson

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson has had to wait nearly a year to get back on the field.  That wait will be just a little longer.

According to ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky, Nelson won’t practice when the Packers hit the practice field on Tuesday morning.

Nelson was placed on the physically unable to perform list on Monday after players underwent physicals and conditioning tests.

The report says Nelson will be joined on the P.U.P list by Sam Barrington, Jared Cook, T.J. Lang, Corey Linsley and Ty Montgomery.  They’ll all be on the sidelines for Tuesday morning’s first practice.

Packers Roster Moves

The Packers released running back Don Jackson and DE B.J. McBryde on Monday afternoon.

Jackson was an undrafted rookie out of Nevada.  McBryde played college ball at Connecticut and had been with the Packers since being signed to the practice squad on nov. 18, 2015.

Palmer ready to take over at ILB

September 17, 2015 By Bill Scott

Packers logoNate Palmer has been making the transition at linebacker from the outside to the inside for the last couple of years.  Sunday night, when the  Green Bay Packers host the Seattle Seahawks at Lambeau Field, we’ll find out just how far he has come.

Palmer entered Sunday’s game at Chicago when starter Sam Barrington left with a foot injury.  He finished the game tied with cornerback Sam Shields for the team lead in tackles with seven.

The Packers are not divulging who the starter will be, opposite Clay Matthews on Sunday.  The other option is rookie Jake Ryan (Michigan), who played only on special teams last week.  Palmer would be the most logical choice.

When Clay Matthews missed time in training camp, it was Palmer who took over in the middle, getting plenty of reps with the top defense. [Read more…]

Packers lose Barrington for the season

September 16, 2015 By Bill Scott

Sam Barrington

Sam Barrington

The Green Bay Packers have placed starting inside linebacker on season ending injured reserve after he suffered a foot injury in Sunday’s win over the Chicago Bears at Soldiers Field.

Barrington became a starter during last season.  He helped a  run defense that was ranked last in the league at the midway point of the season and finished 23rd in rushing yards allowed.

Nate Palmer replaced Barrington against the Bears and is likely  to remain there moving forward.  The Packers could also give some playing time to rookie fourth-round draft pick Jake Ryan.

The Packers gave up 189 rushing yards to the Bears in week one.  They’ll host Seattle this week.  The Seahawks had the best rushing offense a year ago, averaging 172.6 yards per game.  They rushed for 194 yards against the Packers in the NFC Championship game last season.  Marshawn Lynch had 157 of  those yards.

The Packers activated defensive end Datone Jones after he served his one game suspension handed down from the league.

Packers concerned about tackling issues

September 15, 2015 By Bill Scott

Dom Capers

The Green Bay Packers struggled with tackling last season and again during the preseason, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise to see many of those issues come up in last Sunday’s 31-23 win over the Chicago Bears.

The Packers spend time in practice working on tackling form, but it hasn’t translated to the games.  Matt Forte  and Jacquizz Rodgers gained another 54 yards after contact or totally missed tackles against the Bears.

Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers said it’s not good enough.

The Packers get no breaks.  They’ll face Marshawn Lynch and the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday night.  In the NFC Championship game last season, the Packers allowed Lynch to rush for 77 yards on eight carries, including a 24-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and overtime. [Read more…]

Matthews misses practice again, McCarthy wants more from ILB’s

August 5, 2015 By Bill Scott

Clay Matthews

Clay Matthews

Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews skipped training camp practice for the second straight day on Tuesday.  He continued to rest his sore knee that he first experienced on Saturday.

Matthews not practicing opens the door for a number of other inside linebackers to get valuable opportunities alongside Sam Barrington.

The problem is, those linebackers aren’t producing.

“It’s a big opportunity for the inside linebackers,” McCarthy said. “And they need to start making more plays, frankly.”

The players vying for added opportunities are Nate Palmer, who is practicing with a club like cast, Carl Bradford, Joe Thomas and rookie Jake Ryan.

Palmer is getting the majority of the first team reps with Barrington.

McCarthy knows his team is in the installation phase for the rest of the week.  “There’s too much thinking going on, and that’s understandable,” McCarthy said.  “They need to settle in and start playing.”

Packers plan to continue with Matthews at ILB (AUDIO)

May 29, 2015 By Bill Scott

Clay Matthews

When the Green Bay Packers didn’t select a middle linebacker until the third day of the recent NFL Draft, reporters buzzed GM Ted Thompson with questions about the lack of urgency at linebacker.

After the second night of the draft, Thompson assured reporters that the Packers would be just fine at inside linebacker and felt they had current options on their roster.

Many of us assumed the Packers would do what they could to address the position in the draft.  It was assumed the Packers would do everything they could to make sure Clay Matthews returned to his true position at outside linebacker. [Read more…]

Fans get their first look at new Packers in open OTA

May 28, 2015 By Bill Scott

Packer fans watching today's OTA workout!

Packer fans watching today’s OTA workout!

The Green Bay Packers opened OTA workouts on Wednesday and hold their first open to the public and media workout today at 11:30.

While the Packers have their entire starting offense back, they will have some new looks on defense and special teams.

The Packers will have at least one new starter at defensive back this season, replacing last years starter Tramon Williams.

We’ll also see just how much change we can expected to see at Inside Linebacker.  Based on the way Mike McCarthy talked during the draft, it appears the Packers may look to keep Clay Matthews at inside linebacker at least some of the time.  If things stay that way, then the Packers won’t be as hard pressed to find middle linebackers.
