LB A.J. Hawk retires as a Packer (AUDIO)

April 18, 2017 By Bill Scott

A.J. Hawk

Former linebacker A.J. Hawk, who played nine seasons (2006-14) in Green Bay, has informed the club of his decision to retire as a member of the Packers.

Hawk was selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft out of Ohio State.  He ranks number-one in franchise history (since 1975) with 1,118 career tackles, having surpassed linebacker John Anderson’s mark of 1,020 (1978-89) in the 2013 regular-season finale.  Hawk led the Packers in tackles five times during his career (2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 & 2013), which is tied with LB Nick Barnett for the top mark in team history.

Hawk played in 142 of a possible 144 regular-season games with 136 starts in Green Bay, appearing in all 16 [Read more…]

The Cincinnati Bengals released veteran linebacker A.J. Hawk on Tuesday, just over a year after they signed him in free agency.

Hawk spent nine seasons with the Green Bay Packers, then signed a two-year deal with the Bengals last March.

It was a homecoming for Hawk, who grew up in nearby Centerville, Ohio, some 45 minutes north of Cincinnati.

Hawk finished with 24 tackles and a sack in 15 games during the 2015 season.  His 261 snaps and 24 tackles were both career lows.

Nine-year NFL veteran A.J. Hawk, who was released by the Green Bay Packers in late February, has signed a two-year free agent deal with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hawk’s role was reduced in Green Bay as the season progressed.  He finished with 89 tackles and a pair of pass breakups, but played strictly on base downs.

By signing with the Bengals, any thoughts of a possible late return in Green Bay is no longer a reality.  Now he joins the Bengals and moves closer to home.

The Bengals were 20th in the NFL against the run last season.

After nine seasons with the Green Bay Packers, linebacker A.J. Hawk has been released by the team today.

“A.J. is a consummate Packer and we are grateful for all that he has given and how he represented the organization over the past nine seasons,” GM Ted Thompson said.  “He was a durable and consistent contributor to our success, but more importantly, he is a great person and teammate.  The Packers are grateful for all that he has done on the field and in the community.  We wish A.J., his wife Laura, and the rest of their family all the best.”

Inside linebacker is last years Safety

Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy

A year ago, the Green Bay Packers knew they needed to address the safety position.  They were constantly reminded about it during the 2014 Scouting Combine.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy pointed out during this year’s combine that he answered “seven” questions about the Packers’ safety position and compared it to this year, where the questions centered on linebackers.

The Packers went out and drafted Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in the first round.  His acquisition not only improved the position substantially, but Morgan Burnett then went out and had the best season of his career as well. [Read more…]

Hawk doesn’t want diminished role to be a storyline (AUDIO)

Linebacker A.J. Hawk’s contract runs through the 2015 season, but he knows there’s always a chance the Green Bay Packers won’t keep him around beyond this season.

The nine-year veteran has seen his snaps diminish significantly in the last few weeks.  He played just eight snaps in the Packers 3-4 base defense during last Monday night’s win over the Atlanta Falcons.

The Packers, in an attempt to improve defensively moved Clay Matthews into the middle and he’s been joined by Sam Barrington in the nickel package.

Hawk was drafted fifth overall in the 2005 draft and has been the teams most durable player ever since.  But the latest defensive change could signal the possibility of Hawk’s time in Green Bay drawing to a close. [Read more…]

Have a day A.J. (AUDIO)

October 14, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers went into Sunday’s game at Baltimore, missing a couple of

key starters at linebacker.  Clay Matthews (broken thumb) and Brad Jones (hamstring) were both out, replaced by Jamari Lattimore and Nick Perry.

The transition didn’t stop there though.  Jones normally is the defensive player with the ear-piece/speaker in his helmet.  That responsiblity was taken on by Hawk.  The 8th-year linebacker responded with a 10-tackle (5 for loss) and a career high three sacks in Green Bay’s 19-17 win over the Ravens in Baltimore.  The three sacks for Hawk matches his total from the entire 2012 season. Packers cut LB Desmond Bishop

June 17, 2013 By Bill Scott

Desmond Bishop

Desmond Bishop

In a move that has been rumored since the NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers parted ways with linebacker Desmond Bishop Monday by releasing him.

Rumors surfaced during this past April’s draft the Packers were looking to trade the linebacker for a draft pick but nothing surfaced.  Last week, Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel had a story the the team was still looking to trade Bishop and would release them if they couldn’t.

Bishop played six seasons with the Packers playing in 69-games, including 26-starts.  He was on injured-reserve all of last season when he suffered a hamstring injury in the preseason.

The Packers also released linebacker D.J Smith earlier this off-season.  Smith was also on the IR last year after suffering a knee injury in week 6.  A.J Hawk and Brad Jones will likely enter camp as the top-2 inside linebackers on the depth chart.

Packers could part with Bishop

June 12, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers could be moving on without linebacker Desmond Bishop.

Desmond Bishop

The story was first reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and says Bishop will be released unless the two sides are able to restructure his deal or pull off a trade.  Bishop is set to make more than $3.4-million this season, part of the four-year, $19-million deal he signed in January 2011.

Bishop told the JS that he is “completely” healthy and added that there’s still a possibility he could be back with the Packers.

Bishop tore his right hamstring before the start of last season and missed the entire season.  Brad Jones took over and was later re-signed at $11.75 million over three years.  A.J. Hawk also accepted a pay cut and is set to make $10.6-million over the next three years.

Bishop said he’ll be ready to participate by training camp.  We’ll see if that will be with the Packers or another NFL team.

Packers re-sign LB Brad Jones

March 21, 2013 By Bill Scott

Brad Jones took his tour around the NFL in free agency, then he returned to Green Bay to talk with the Packers and a deal was struck.  Jones

decided to resign with the Packers, despite receiving significant interest from a number of other NFL teams.

Jones was a big piece of the puzzle for the Packers defense last season after both Desmond Bishop and D.J. Smith were lost to season-ending injuries.  Jones played alongside A.J. Hawk in the Packers base defense and it was Jones that served as the lone linebacker in the dime.  Jones’ final numbers were 77 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 4 pass break-ups in 12-games.

Jones was a 7th round draft pick in the 2009 NFL draft by the Packers out of Colorado.
