Matthews will be a game time decision for Packers

November 23, 2017 By Bill Scott

Clay Matthews

Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews didn’t practice on Wednesday and said his playing status will likely be determined just before the game on Sunday night at Pittsburgh.

Matthews said there is a concern that playing could make his groin injury worse.  He didn’t practice on Wednesday and that doesn’t bode well for Matthews availability for the game against the Steelers.

Matthews was hurt in last Sunday’s 23-0 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.  If he can’t play, defensive coordinator Dom Capers could go with veteran Ahmad Brooks, who played 27 snaps against Baltimore last week.  Kyler Fackrell also saw more opportunity when Matthews went down and played well.

Even rookie Vince Biegel played 16 snaps last week and should see at least that much this week if Matthews can’t go.

Packers announce roster moves, Biegel set to make debut

November 3, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers made a series of roster moves on Friday, starting with the activation of linebacker Vince Biegel from reserve/physically unable to perform.  In addition, they signed long snapper Derek Hart to the active roster.

The Packers also signed cornerback Donatello Brown to the active roster from the practice squad, signed TE Emanuel Byrd to the practice squad and placed safety Kentrell Brice and long snapper Taybor Pepper on injured reserve.

Biegel’s activation paves the way for the former Badger to make his NFL debut on Monday night when the Packers face the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field.

Biegel could make his NFL debut this week

November 2, 2017 By Bill Scott

Vince Biegel

The Green Bay Packers released defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois for the second time this season, possibly opening the door to make room for rookie outside linebacker Vince Biegel.

Biegel was the Packers fourth round draft pick out of Wisconsin.  He spent the first six weeks of the regular season on the physically unable to perform list after suffering a foot injury during offseason workouts.

The former Badger began practicing before the Packers’ loss to the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 22.

Jean Francoise saw little playing time, getting just five snaps in the Saints game.  He spent the previous two seasons with the Washington Redskins before signing with the Packers as a free agent in the off-season.

Rodgers headed for surgery, McCarthy not happy with the hit that put him there

October 17, 2017 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will have surgery on his broken right collarbone “in the near future”.  That was the message from coach Mike McCarthy on Monday.

Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said Monday that Anthony Barr’s hit on the Packers quarterback was “above board,” and said the Vikings are not a dirty football team.  Mike McCarthy has different thoughts on Barr’s hit.

“He’s out of the pocket, he’s clearly expecting to get hit,” McCarthy said.  “To pin him to the ground like that, I felt it was an illegal act.  To sit here and lose any of your players on something like that, it doesn’t feel very good. Yeah, I didn’t like the hit.  It was unnecessary, totally unnecessary, in my opinion.”

Rodgers was rolling out late in the first quarter.  After he released the ball, he was hit by Barr and the Vikings linebacker continued to drive him into the turf.

As of Monday afternoon, surgery had not been scheduled according to McCarthy.  But no decision on Rodgers roster spot will likely be made until after the surgery. [Read more…]

Biegel out another week with the Packers

August 23, 2017 By Bill Scott

Vince Biegel

As training camp and the NFL preseason winding down, time is running out for Green Bay Packers 4th round pick, linebacker Vince Biegel to get himself ready for the start of the regular season.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy announced Tuesday that Biegel wouldn’t practice this week and won’t play Saturday night in preseason game number three at Denver.  The former Badger hasn’t practiced since breaking a bone in his foot on the second day of the Packers’ rookie orientation in early May.

Following Saturday’s game, the Packers will have one practice next week, followed by next Thursday’s preseason finale against the Rams at Lambeau Field.

McCarthy said they want to avoid a setback with Biegel.

Injury update

Second year defensive lineman Dean Lowry was held out of practice on Tuesday with an unspecified knee injury.  Mike McCarthy said the injury is not a long term concern.

Wide receiver Malachi Dupre and defensive back Damarious Randall both return to practice after being cleared from the teams concussion protocol.

Running back  Ty Montgomery also returned to practice after sitting last week with a lower leg injury.

Rookie Kevin King is the latest to be sidelined by injury

August 2, 2017 By Bill Scott

Kevin King

The Green Bay Packers now have three of their first four draft picks sidelined in training camp by injury.  Top overall pick Kevin King sustained a shoulder injury and didn’t participate in Tuesday’s practice.

The 33rd overall pick in the draft had been working in practice with the number-one defense.  He was selected to help a pass defense which finished 31st in the league last season.

King joins 3rd round pick Montravius Adams had foot surgery on Tuesday to repair a stress fracture.  Fourth round pick Vince Biegel (Wisconsin) started training camp on the P.U.P. list after undergoing foot surgery in the offseason.

Without King, Quinten Rollins teamed with Davon House as the two corners in the base defense on Tuesday while Damarious Randall was anchored in the slot.

The Packers used their top four draft picks on defense and only second-round selection Josh Jones was on the practice field on Tuesday.  He’s off to a great start in training camp, continuing to make impact plays on a daily basis.

Packers lose rookie Adams for a few weeks with “foot injury”

July 31, 2017 By Bill Scott

Montravius Adams

The Green Bay Packers lost rookie defensive lineman Montravius Adams for “multiple weeks” of the preseason with a foot injury.  The announcement came Monday morning from coach Mike McCarthy.

The third-round pick from Auburn was expected to compete for playing time on the defensive line.  He left practice on Friday, the second of two non-padded workouts to start training camp and has yet to work in pads.

Adams joins former Badger Vince Biegel, a fourth-round pick, on the sideline.  Biegel had foot surgery in May on his right foot and started training camp on the P.U.P. list.  Because Adams practiced the first two days of training camp, so he isn’t eligible for P.U.P.

It’s a tough blow for Adams, who will miss critical practice and development time.

Biegel, Goodson start training camp on PUP list (AUDIO)

July 27, 2017 By Bill Scott

Vince Biegel

Former Wisconsin Badger outside linebacker Vince Biegel has started training camp with the Green Bay Packers on their Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.  The rookie fourth round pick is joined by cornerback Demetri Godson.

Biegel underwent surgery on his right foot in May, shortly after the rookie mini-camp.  It’s the same injury that kept him out of 2-games with the Badgers last season.  He’s expected to miss a couple of weeks of training camp.

Goodson blew out his knee in a game last November and isn’t ready after undergoing surgery.

The Packers lost Julius Peppers and Datone Jones to free agency, leaving Clay Matthews and Nick Perry as the only two [Read more…]

Biegel signs his rookie deal with Green Bay

June 1, 2017 By Bill Scott

Vince Biegel

Former Wisconsin Badger Vince Biegel became the eighth pick of the Green Bay Packers 2017 draft class to sign a contract on Wednesday.

Biegel has been sidelined since the end of the teams rookie minicamp after undergoing foot surgery.  Biegel had the same kind of surgery and missed two games while playing with the Badgers last season.  He’s expected to be ready to go for the start of training camp.

Only two Packers draft selections remain unsigned, third round defensive lineman Montravius Adams and fourth round running back Jamaal Williams.

Biegel sidelined by foot surgery

May 16, 2017 By Bill Scott

Vince Biegel

Green Bay Packers’ fourth-round draft pick, outside linebacker Vince Biegel had foot surgery last week.  The Packers are hoping he’ll be ready for the start of training camp on July 27.

The story was first reported by ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky.

The injury was described as a Jones fracture, the same injury he sustained last fall, when he had a screw inserted into his foot and missed two games while playing for the Badgers.  Biegel’s sack total dropped from 9.5 as a junior to six as a senior.

Biegel was the first player selected on the third day of the draft, number 108 overall, and the Packers are [Read more…]
