Marquette falls in Wooden Championship

December 2, 2013 By Bill Scott

San Diego State got a career high 27 points from senior guard Xavier Thames as the Aztecs knocked off 25th ranked Marquette 67-59 in the title game of the Wooden Legacy Championship in Anaheim, California on Sunday night.

Marquette trailed by as many as 10-points in the second half before rebounding to tie the game at 53 with just over 3-minutes left to play.  That’s when the Aztecs used a 14-4 run to pull out the win.

The Golden Eagles weren’t playing at 100%.  Their top big man, Davante Gardner, vomited on the floor early in the contest.  Gardner ended up playing 23 minutes but was held to six points.

Former Milwaukee Vincent star, freshman Deonte Burton, scored 15 for the Golden Eagles in defeat.

Marquette finished its trip out west with a 2-2 record to run its record to 5-3.  They’ll likely fall out of the top 25 when the new polls come out today.

Marquette’s Gardner won’t be suspended

January 30, 2013 By Bill Scott

In #25 Marquette’s 63-50 victory over South Florida Monday, Golden Eagles Junior Davante Gardner was ejected from the game after receiving a flagarant-2 foul when his elbow connected with a South Florida player.  Marquette was informed Tuesday that there would be no further discipline for Gardner.

Marquette is out to a 6-1 start in the Big East which has them tied on top of the standings with #6 Syracuse.  If Gardner would have been suspended, he would have missed a big match-up for them.  The Golden Eagles are at #12 Louisville.

Gardner leads the Golden Eagles in rebounds per game (5.5) and is second on the team in points (12.7) and blocks (0.8) per contest.

Marquette overcomes another slow start

February 1, 2012 By Bill Scott

The 15th ranked Marquette Golden Eagles rallied from 11 points down in the second half to get by Seton Hall 66-59 in Big East action at the Bradley Center.

Jae Crowder scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds and Vander Blue added 16 points for the Golden Eagles (19-4, 8-2 Big East) in the win.

It was the 7th straight victory for the Golden Eagles.  Marquette trailed the entire first half and didn’t take the lead until beyond the midway point of the second half.  It’s a habit the Golden Eagles are trying to break, but they’re not having much luck.

The Golden Eagles had to play without their big man, 6’8, 290 pound forward Davante Gardner, who sprained his left knee in Saturday’s win over Villanova.

Next up for the Golden Eagles, a road game at Notre Dame on Saturday.
