Democrats are hammering the Mitt Romney campaign because of his running mate’s proposals on Medicare. Congressman Paul Ryan wants to reform the program because of ballooning costs.

Marquette University Political Scientist John McAdams says the idea may appeal to some moderates but Ryan has the challenge of simplifying the message about a complex program, while fighting people’s fear of change.

“No matter how much he (Ryan) explains it, some people particularly seniors, will say ‘okay but I really don’t know how this is going to work out and it could be pretty risky for me,” says McAdams.

He says seniors tend to be risk averse, as seen in many of them opposing the Affordable Care Act because of concerns it would make changes to Medicare.
