The state Assembly on Tuesday passed a Republican tax cut package. Four bills include an expansion of the state’s second lowest tax bracket. “So if you’re an individual or a married couple earning more than $28,000, your tax rate is going to go down from 5.3 to 4.4. So this is broad based, this is middle class,” said Representative Terry Katsma (R-Oostburg).

But will it be middle class enough for Governor Tony Evers to sign?  “He continues to say things like, ‘oh, I want a middle class tax cut, I want a middle class tax cut,’ said Majority Leader Tyler August (R-Lake Geneva) That’s exactly what this package is.” Governor Tony Evers last year twice vetoed bills cutting taxes for the state’s top earners.

The other bills passed on Tuesday exempt up to $75,000 of retirees’ income and expand tax credits for married filers and for those with children.
