Visitors to the state Capitol building in Madison will have to avoid the rotunda for the next month. The state Department of Administration says the area will be closed from October 5 through November 10, so repairs on the interior of the Capitol dome can be done.

During that time period, the first and second floors of the Capitol rotunda will be closed. The Capitol dome will also remain closed during the entire project, which DOA says it expected to continue through January of next year.

The wide open rotunda is probably one of the most heavily used areas in the building, with school groups, blood drives, concerts, ceremonies and news conferences frequently held in the space. Protesters have also staged daily sing-a-longs there since 2011, although the group has often moved when other events are taking place.

The space is expected to be reopened in time for the busy holiday season, which sees the Capitol Christmas Tree placed in the center of the building, along with several other displays.
