Wisconsin’s roads were well-used last year, according to new figures from the state Department of Transportation.
The agency estimates motorists traveled about 60 billion miles on state roadways in 2014, up 550 million miles from the previous year. Officials attribute the jump to growth in commercial traffic and the state’s higher population.
Wisconsin had 4.2 million licensed drivers in the state, and the DOT estimates the average resident logged 10,430 miles during the year.
The figures are based on fuel usage, average gas mileage for vehicles, and traffic counts from 28,000 locations throughout Wisconsin. The DOT uses the data to help plan for future transportation projects.
