Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day in Wisconsin (UNDATED)

It’s a significant day for Wisconsinites of different heritages. The second Monday in October is recognized as Indigenous Peoples Day in many parts of the country, including Wisconsin, which is home to 11 federally recognized Native American tribes. The Madison area with its chain of four lakes is known as Dejope by the indigenous Ho-Chunk people. It’s also traditionally Columbus Day. Milwaukee Italian Community Center salutes that city’s Italian Heritage with its annual Festa Italia. Madison’s Greenbush neighborhood was once home to an ethnically and racially diverse community, including many Italian American families, all of whom were displaced during the so-called urban renewal era in the 1960s.
