Verona middle school teacher charged for alleged affair with student seven years ago (VERONA)
A middle school teacher near Madison is charged with a felony for an alleged affair with a student 7 years ago. Authorities say the allegations against 34 year old Halla Nelson just recently came to light after a parent in the Verona School District learned of the relationship and contacted school officials. The former student told police Nelson was his teacher at the Verona middle school when he was in choir. He says they reconnected and started up a sexual relationship when he was 17 and in high school in 2019. He claims he met with Nelson at a house in Verona where she was staying during her divorce. Nelson has been placed on leave, without pay, from her job in the district. She is charged with sexual assault of a student by school staff.
WILL files lawsuit against Flock Safety over data access by police (WAUKESHA)
More trouble for Flock Safety as a conservative law group challenges the company in court. The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty on Thursday filed a suit in Waukesha County against the security company on behalf of a group of residents. According to WILL more than 120 Flock cameras in the county are pointed at churches, gun stores and government buildings and building an unchecked database of residents travel and movements. WILL President Rick Esenberg says their lawsuit does not seek to shut the company down, but to require a warrant for police and government agencies to use the data in court.
Construction could start next year on longer Bay Beach Park trail (GREEN BAY)
Construction could start next year on proposed new trail at Green Bay’s Bay Beach Park. City officials are proposing a mile long trail along the popular tourist destination. A 2 point 4 million dollar plan was released last week after a bid to build a shorter trail and a large viewing platform over the lake came in over budget. City parks officials say the new trail could give visitors access to parts of Bay Beach that were previously only accessible via one of the park’s train rides.
Oshkosh approves 12-month data center moratorium (OSHKOSH)
The city of Oshkosh moves forward with a one year moratorium on data center projects. Common council member Alec Lefeber (LE-feeb-er) says Wisconsin says the Fox Valley needs to work together on a regional plan for zoning. “Something could absolutely be proposed elsewhere in our region and still have impacts that extend well beyond one municipality, particularly when it comes to our shared watershed.” Lefeber says he hopes a statewide solution can be reached. Multiple other Fox Valley communities have already passed moratoriums.
