Flu vaccines available, recommended for everyone this year (UPDATED)
Wisconsin health officials are urging everyone to get the flu vaccine this year. This year’s influenza vaccine will cover the two most common strains of flu, as well as a more contagious strain that hit the US last year. Flu vaccines are recommended for everyone 6 months old or older, and will be widely available. Fraternity banned from UW-Madison campus closed by national org following hazing incident (MADISON)
A UW-Madison fraternity is shut down by its national organization following a hazing incident. Alpha Epsilon Pi issued a cease-and-desist order after 30 pledges were found in appalling conditions last week. Madison Police acting on a tip found the young men covered in food and other liquids in the basement of the fraternity. The thermostat was set to 81 and according to a police incident report several men showed signs of having been physically assaulted. Two fraternity leaders were arrested on misdemeanor hazing and disorderly conduct charges. Alpha Epsilon Pi’s order shuts down all activities while the national organization investigates the Madison chapter, which was suspended by the UW more than a decade ago but still occupies its campus area house.
Four injured in Walworth County plane crash (EAST TROY)
A weekend plane crash in southeastern Wisconsin. A small plane carrying four people went down in a cornfield in the Walworth County community of in East Troy on Sunday. Three people were taken to the hospital for evaluation, and one was treated and released on-site. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is now leading the investigation into the crash. Skydive Milwaukee, which has a facility near the crash site, issued a statement to confirm that the plane involved was not associated with the company.
Two killed in Jefferson Co. motorcycle crash (JOHNSON CREEK)
A multi vehicle crash in Jefferson County leaves 2 dead. The accident happened late Sunday morning east of Johnson Creek. The sheriff’s office says it involved a car and two motorcycles. The driver of the car told police he thought the motorcyclists were in his lane and he swerved causing the collision. The driver of the car and one of the motorcycles received minor injuries while the driver and a passenger on a 2nd motorcycle both died at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
Wayward kangaroo spotted over the weekend (MERRIMAC)
A kangaroo on the loose in southern Wisconsin was spotted over the weekend. On Saturday, the kangaroo was seen along Highway 78 in Merrimac. It’s believed this is one of 4 kangaroos that escaped from a trailer on I-39 near Portage after their owner stopped to transfer animals between vehicles. Two of the kangaroos were struck and killed in traffic, while a 3rd was rescued and the 4th hopped away. Rescue crews say time is of the essence, as the kangaroo will not survive our winter or any stretch of really cold weather.
